In this tale, Saadi weaves a scene that begins with apparent bullying and ends with complete mystical surrender. It is the story of the “dark-skinned man” who confronted ridicule with the truth of the “Creator, the Fashioner,” thus transporting us from a position of defending the image to a position of absolute dependence on the Almighty, affirming that the servant has no power over his affairs except through the grace of the One who causes all causes.
It is said that a man dared to insult a dark-skinned man, calling him ugly and repulsive. The dark-skinned man responded with eloquent words that left the critic speechless and bewildered.
“I did not fashion my own features with my own hands, so that you consider my ugliness a sin I committed, or a mistake I made myself?
What business is it of yours? If I am ugly, it is not I who ultimately paints the brush of beauty or depicts ugliness in this existence; that is the sole power of the Creator.
I am merely a copy of what the eternal Creator inscribed upon my brow since time immemorial; I have not added to that decree by even a speck, nor subtracted from it by an atom’s weight.
For God alone knows my condition, and He knows that I possess no power whatsoever. For the All-Powerful, the Almighty, is God alone. Who am I in the vast ocean of the Creator’s majesty?”
If You guide me, my Lord, with the light of Your grace, I will reach the shore of goodness and salvation. But if You lead me astray from the straight path, then all means will have failed me, and I will be unable to continue my journey.
If the care of the Creator of the universe does not encompass this weak servant with His support, how can he ever find a way to the station of piety or the path of righteousness?
How profound are the words of that poor, destitute dervish, utterly helpless, when he confessed that he had turned to God in the dead of night, only to break his covenant with Him at the first light of dawn!
He said: “If the Almighty accepts our repentance, our affairs will be set right. But our covenants (which we humans make with ourselves) are flimsy, lacking stability and foundation.”
So I beseech You, by Your Great Right, O God, to turn my eyes away from the temptations of falsehood, and I implore You by the light of Your Majesty not to burn my body in the fires of Hell tomorrow.
For poverty has humiliated us until my face has been rubbed in the dust of humiliation, and the dust of my sins has risen until it has reached the heavens.
My God, You are the cloud of mercy, so shower us with Your mercy just once; for the heap of dust cannot withstand the torrent of purifying rain.
For my sins have stripped me of my dignity and worth in Your vast kingdom, and I no longer have any standing. But where is the escape? I have no direction to turn, nor any other door to knock on, except Yours.
For You are the Knower of what the hearts of those whose tongues are tied (by the weight of sins/death, hesitant to repent due to their ignorance) conceal. You are the One who places the balm of healing upon the hearts of the weary and wounded.
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
The True Creator (Zibangar): In Saadi’s doctrine, mocking the image is mocking the “Creator/God Almighty,” as mystics see the universe as a mirror reflecting the Creator’s manifestation, and objecting to the ugliness of the appearance is ignorance of the wisdom of the inner self.
Determinism And destiny (bar sar nabshti): Saadi expresses the station of “submission”; for man is nothing but what the pen of destiny has written, and the servant’s acknowledgment that he has “no increase or decrease in his affairs” is the pinnacle of the unity of action.
The attainment of repentance (gar o tobah bakhshad): Saadi presents a subtle Sufi vision; It is that repentance itself is a blessing from God, and the servant breaks his covenant with God due to his weakness, and God establishes repentance through His grace. Therefore, there is no salvation through purely personal effort.
The metaphor of dust and rain: Saadi likens sins to dust that obscures vision and fills the horizon, and he likens divine mercy to rain. This image suggests that divine forgiveness is a universal act that erases the effects of human imperfection, just as dust is easily dispelled by water.
The necessity of having no refuge other than Him (Malki dagar rah nist): This is the highest state of existential poverty. The seeker on the Sufi path realizes that his escape from God is only to God alone, for there is no other existence that can contain him if the Almighty God rejects him.
This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book, Bustan, means that all of creation is the work of the Great Creator, and that any flaw in the creation stems from the wisdom of the Maker. Therefore, it is not permissible for one human being to despise another. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the station of “true need,” emphasizing that no matter how great a servant’s sins or how many times he breaks his covenants, he has no refuge or door except the threshold of the Generous One who knows the whispers of the silent and mends the brokenness of the weary.
