Come, let us now raise our hands in supplication to God from the depths of our hearts; for soon we will be dust beneath the layers of earth, and then our hands will have no power to pray.
Do you not see the trees in the stormy autumn season, how they shed their leaves and stand tall against the harsh cold?
Those trees raise their bare branches like empty hands pleading with God for their needs, broken and humbled. For we have never known the clouds of divine mercy to turn away a supplicant empty-handed and disappointed.
And do not think that the hand extended towards that door (the door of God)—which is never closed—can be turned away shrouded in despair.
Rather, divine providence clothes them, after the drought, with a splendid robe of leaves, and destiny places the fruits of sustenance in the sheaths of their branches.
And if all draw near to God through their acts of obedience, then we are the truly needy. We draw ever closer in our need; so let us seek refuge at the threshold of the Creator, God, the One who mends the brokenness of the weak.
And let us raise our hands, like those withered branches; for we no longer have the patience to remain in the scorching heat of deprivation without sustenance from God’s grace.
So, O Lord of Existence, look upon us with the eye of Your overflowing generosity. For error and transgression have been inherent in the nature of humankind since time immemorial.
The sin emanates from the humble servant, who places his hope in the pardon and forgiveness of the Almighty.
O Generous One (God), we have grown and been nurtured at the table of Your provision, and our souls have become accustomed to the covenant of Your benevolence and Your enduring kindness.
And indeed, the supplicant (the poor servant), once he tastes the sweetness of generosity and the tenderness of kindness from the Giver, will not hesitate thereafter to follow in the footsteps of the Bestower.
And as You have encompassed us, O Lord, with Your covering. Your glory in this world is our hope, for our eyes yearn to receive the same honor in the Hereafter (the Day of Resurrection).
For glory and humiliation belong to the servant, in Your all-powerful hand alone. And he whom You crown with the crown of Your glory will never suffer the humiliation of creation.
My Lord, I beseech You by the majesty of Your glory not to cast me out in disgrace, nor to expose me with the shame of my sins before all of creation on the Day of Resurrection.
And do not grant any human being (creature) like me any power over me. For me, enduring the bitterness of punishment from Your hand is more beloved than the injustice of an equal like myself.
For there is no evil in this world more grievous, nor any affliction more dreadful, than for a free man to bear the injustice of one who is equal to him in deficiency and essence (meaning, a free man cannot bear the injustice of a fellow human being, created by God).
So, what I feel before Your majesty and Your modesty is enough shame for me, O my Lord. Do not increase my shame and expose my secrets before the rest of creation.
If You were to bestow upon me the shade of Your protection, the heavens and all their celestial bodies would be less than my station and my glory.
And if You were to grant me the crown of acceptance, my standing among creation would rise. So raise me up with Your might, O my Lord, so that no one among creation may have the power to deter me or diminish my worth.
For my limbs tremble, and my being shakes, whenever I recall the supplication of that devout mystic in the precincts of the sanctuary.
With a broken and wounded heart, he cried out: “My God, envelop me in Your forgiveness, and do not leave me a prisoner of humiliation.”
And with fervent supplication, he pleaded: “Do not cast me down in despair on the Day of Resurrection; for if You do (God forbid), none but You will rescue my soul from its abyss.
I call upon You with Your kindness, and do not turn me away disappointed at Your door, my head has no place to bow except at Your threshold.
For You know that we are poor and helpless, and our struggle with the soul that incites evil has exhausted us for ages.
Indeed, the unbridled nature of this rebellious soul surpasses the mind’s ability to restrain it or hold its reins.
And who possesses the strength to confront the soul that incites evil and Satan alone? Confronting ferocious tigers is a task beyond the reach of weak ants.
So I swear by the righteous followers of Your path (those who adhere to the path of truth), grant me the means to reach You, and be my refuge from these enemies (my own soul and Satan).
My God, I beseech You by Your sacred Divine Essence, and by Your attributes, which have no equal and no peer.
I beseech You by the call of supplication rising from the hearts of the pilgrims to Your Sacred House, and by the sanctity of the Chosen One buried in Yathrib, the Blessed of God on His soil.
I beseech You, by the cries of “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) uttered by the valiant knights who plunge into the thick of battle, who see their unparalleled heroism before Your majesty, as weakness and vulnerability.
I beseech You, by the worship of the elders adorned with dignity, and by the sincerity of the youth who approach Your obedience with pure hearts.
Grant us relief at that decisive moment (at the time of death), and save us from the shame of associating partners with God or seeking and relying on anyone other than God.
For the abundance of our hope and expectation rests upon the noble people of obedience. Perhaps they will intercede for us, the negligent ones, before You, O our Lord.
By the right of the pure ones in Your presence, cleanse me from all defilement. And if I err, by Your grace, forgive me.
By the right of the elders whose backs bowed in submission and obedience in Your sanctuary, and who lowered their gazes in modesty, fearing the exposure of their own shortcomings,
Do not deprive my sight of beholding the face of true happiness, nor prevent my tongue from uttering the testimony of faith: “I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” before my departure from this world (Death)
Illuminate my path with the lamp of certainty, and restrain my hands from what displeases You.
Turn my gaze away from forbidden things, and do not let me commit sins.
For I am but a wandering speck, vanished in the expanse of Your presence; and existence and non-existence are equal to me because of my utter insignificance before Your greatness.
A single ray of Your kindness is enough for me (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful). Without it, I would remain lost in the darkness of obscurity, and only through this light I become something.
O my Lord, look upon this sinful servant and make him the most righteous of Your servants by Your grace alone; for the supplicant seeks nothing but a merciful glance from the King.
If You were to judge me by the scales of justice and equity, my soul would cry out in anguish; for I have placed my hopes in nothing but Your forgiveness.
My God, do not cast me out in humiliation from Your door. For what do I have, according to the laws of certainty (Certainly, I do not possess any other door, except yours)—another door by which I may seek refuge, or through which I may hope to attain?
And if heedlessness deceived me and ignorance led me to be absent for a time from Your obedience, here I am, having returned. So, by Your mercy, do not close a door in the face of a servant who comes to You in submission.
What excuse shall I offer before You for the shame of my sins? For I have no escape, except to present the merchandise of my helplessness before the Rich and Generous One.
For I am the poor and destitute one, so do not hold me accountable for my crime. It is the way of the All-Sufficient to be merciful to the wretched and negligent.
Why must the servant resort to weeping when he is in a weak state? Because the weak have no refuge except in the strong and mighty support of the Almighty.
My God, we have broken our covenant with You and have not worshipped You as You deserve, in the intoxication of heedlessness. What power does our wretched striving have against the might of the decreed destiny?
And what can our limited planning possibly accomplish? Perhaps this acknowledgment of our helplessness is the strongest excuse for our shortcomings towards You.
For everything I did according to my own judgment, You changed (according to Your power and wisdom), and no human being has dominion over God’s power and divinity.
I am not the one who oversteps the bounds of Your wisdom; rather, it is Your wisdom that decrees my fate as You will, by Your power.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Metaphor of Trees in Autumn: Saadi connects the “stripping of leaves from trees” with the “stripping of the soul” from pretensions. The tree that has lost its leaves (the adornment of this world) raises its branches (its hands) to God in sincere humility and need. This is the station of “abstraction.”
The Commanding Soul and the Tigers: Saadi portrays the commanding soul as a ferocious beast (a tiger) that the “ants” of reason and planning cannot overcome. Salvation here is not through struggle but through fleeing to the protection of the Creator from these ferocious beasts.
Duality: In mysticism, “duality” is hidden polytheism (the vision of “I” and “He”). The seeker hopes that his Lord will save him from the “dual shame” (the disgrace of duality) to reach the station of absolute unity.
The Atom and the Sun: An expression of The station of “annihilation” and the seeker on the Sufi path is an atom that can only be seen by sunlight; When the sun sets, he ceases to exist; when it rises, he vanishes in its light.
Tardamni (wetness): A tail soiled with water and mud is a Persian metaphor for moral defilement. The seeker apologizes to the “Sufficient/God” for his soiled tail and his only recourse being to demonstrate his “helplessness.”
Khoda’i and Khodi (divinity and self): The greatest contradiction in Sufism. “Khodi” (self) is the veil that prevents the vision of “Khoda’i” (divine will). Sa’di acknowledges that all his plans are shattered before God’s decree.
This supplication by Sa’di Shirazi in the opening of the tenth chapter of his book Bustan signifies that true servitude begins with acknowledging one’s own poverty and surrendering the reins of power to the Master of Decree (God). It holds significant importance in spiritual development. Spiritual and emotional because it places the seeker in the position of “purifying necessity” that combines humility before the Creator and pride before the created, confirming that the merchandise of helplessness in the hands of “the strong, rich, God” is the only way to win the robe of acceptance and the illumination of the lamp of certainty in the depths of the last breaths (death).
