I recall a night when sleep overcame me as I traversed the deserts of Fayd. It was as if the sweet slumber had bound my feet with the heavy shackles of oblivion, rendering me unable to keep pace with the caravan.
Then the caravan’s driver, stern-faced and harsh, struck me on the head with his goad, the kind he uses to discipline camels, shouting sharply: “Wake up, you! Rise to claim your stolen dawn!

Perhaps you have grown accustomed to the bed of death and resigned your heart to annihilation before its appointed time, so that the ringing of bells announcing the end of the planting season and the beginning of the journey no longer stirs your soul?”
I too—poor me/my dear Saadi—am haunted by the specter of sweet slumber (surrendering, like you, to death without action). Yet this desolate wilderness that looms before us demands compulsive wakefulness and refuses to linger in sleep; for the reckoning is severe (on the Day of Judgment), and the path is arduous.
So, you who do not stir from your soft slumber at the caller’s cry, how can you find the signs of salvation or reach the harbors of arrival while you gamble with your last breaths?
Then the caravan leader fell upon his drum with force — as if it were the voice of the Angel of Death calling for the appointed times — and the vanguard of the caravan set off towards the houses of tranquility; Where eternal stillness lies beneath the layers of earth (the grave).
Blessed are those of wise and successful minds who prepared provisions for the Hereafter and packed the bags of piety before the Hour begins to be announced, and before the Giver of Souls (God Almighty) reclaims His trust.
For those who succumbed to the slumber of heedlessness on the path of righteousness, when their sleep is dispelled by the cry of resurrection on the Day of Judgment, will find no trace of those who preceded them to the shade of acceptance.

Rather, the prize of precedence belongs to that traveler (for life in this world is like a traveler) who hastened to rise after the night’s slumber. How can the dead (in the grave) awaken after the caravan of life has departed, the carpet of deeds has been rolled up, and the ink of destiny has dried?
How can one who sowed barley (evil) in the spring of strength and youth (at the beginning of his life) hope to reap abundant wheat (goodness) on the Day of Judgment when the scales of reckoning are set up?
Therefore, you who have squandered this world must now awaken from your stupor. As for the awakening that death imposes feverishly, it is a waking of regret befitting the helpless who squandered the power of their minds in this world.
So when old age (the whiteness of day) descends upon the dark night of your youth, know that the dawn of departure has broken (the alarm bell has rung to signal the beginning of the journey from this world); so keep your eyelids awake and forsake the beds of deadly heedlessness.
For I myself (Saadi) bid farewell to my hopes of worldly eternity since that fateful day when I saw the hordes of white breaking the blackness of my hair. For old age has called out in my ears: “Come, let us depart from this world!”
Alas for the pearls of life, how their necklace has scattered! And know with certainty that what remains of your time will vanish in the same flash that consumed its beginning.
So beware lest you arrive on the plains of the Day of Resurrection without even a wick of piety as your provision. How difficult it will be to stand in the place of reckoning with a heart gnawed by the claws of regret, where resignation will be of no avail and no excuse will be accepted.
If there remains in your mind a spark of wisdom, then let your concern be preparing for the abode of solitude (the grave) while you still have the freedom of your will in this world, before the vermin devour you, and the ant eating the eyes that have long been blind to the path of truth.
O beloved one (my son), the reward of the Hereafter depends on the wise investment of one’s life in this world. The wise person is the one who transforms their breaths into lasting treasures, while the one who squanders the capital of their life in heedlessness has sold their eternal life in the Hereafter for a paltry price.
So hasten to salvation while there is still time (and you are in the middle of your life/the middle of the journey, the time for departure from this world has not yet come), and beware of procrastination lest the flood of death engulf you. For he who is drowned in the depths of death is incapable of uttering a word of repentance and turning to God.

So pour out your tears of regret today while your strength is still abundant, and offer verses of seeking forgiveness and apology to the Almighty, for your tongue is at your command. Life is but a borrowed opportunity that will inevitably be taken away.
For the soul is but a strange bird that will one day leave the cage of the body, just as the Creator bestowed it upon it. He will surely reclaim it, and this tongue is a key that will soon be closed. So strive to speak the truth before silence seals your lips.
And make your repentance time now, before the flame of awareness (the speaking soul) dies out and you are prevented from speaking, becoming bound by your deeds and what you reaped in this world, in the depths of the earth (your grave).
So lend an ear to the admonitions of the insightful today, my son, before you face the questioning of the two angels in the darkness of the grave, where no companion will support you and no tongue will benefit you except what you presented to yourself in this world.
So consider every breath a gain, for the body is but a cage whose value is derived from the bird of the soul. When the bird flies, by the command of its Lord, the cage crumbles into useless rubble.
Do not waste your life in futile lamentation and regret after it is too late; for opportunity is a precious jewel, and as it has been said: Time is like a sword; if you do not cut it with good deeds, it will sever the thread of your life with the anguish of loss.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Fayd Desert: A symbol of the transitional stage in the seeker’s life (midlife); falling asleep there signifies being lost from the caravan heading towards the House of God (the ultimate truth).
The Strike of the Guide (Shterban): Symbolizes the divine “whip of admonition”; God sends the servant signs to awaken him (illness, old age, loss) like a strike of a staff to rouse him from the slumber of this world.
The Call of Departure (Bang Rahil): In gnosis, the ringing of a bell is the sound of flowing time. The gnostic senses the scent of death at every moment, therefore he finds no solace in this world.
The Successful Sage (Hoshyar): He is the one who anticipates time with “preemptive repentance” (adornment before detachment), packing his belongings before the Angel of Death summons him forcibly.
The Awakening of Regret: This is the awakening that comes at the moment of the soul’s departure. Where the veil is lifted, but there is no more room for action; the fortunate one is he who awakens in the “House of Action,” and the unfortunate one is he who awakens in the “House of Recompense.”
Sowing barley and reaping wheat: a brilliant representation of the “Law of Merit.” He who sows his desires (barley) will not reap knowledge (wheat). The harvest is the kind of thing the soul sows in its youth.
The dawn of your life has broken (Sefid dar Siahi): This metaphor makes gray hair a “dawn.” This dawn is not of the physical day, but rather the “dawn of the Hereafter” that rises in the night of this world. Whoever sees this dawn is obligated to perform the prayer of repentance.
The management of the grave (Tadbir Gur): In Sufi practice, the grave is considered “compulsory seclusion.” The wise gnostic is the one who alleviates the loneliness of his grave with the “light of remembrance” while still in this world. The ants eating the eyes symbolize the fading of the tools of sensory perception, leaving only the “eye of insight.”
Capital (Sarmayeh): Life is the “individual essence” that God bestows upon His servant. Spending it on permissible things is a “freezing” of capital, spending it on sins is its “destruction,” and spending it in remembrance of God is “multiplied profit.”
The metaphor of the flood (Silab): The flood represents the “throes of death” or “too late.” As long as the water is at the waist, the servant possesses “freedom of movement” (choice). But if it rises above the head, he enters a state of “compulsion” in which repentance is not accepted.
The speaking soul (the breath): In Illuminationist philosophy, it is the spiritual essence of man, and its silence signifies “death.” Saadi urges its utterance of “testimony and repentance” before the grave seals it.
Munkar and Nakir: Invoking the awe of the grave and the questioning of the two angels is an educational tool to suppress the “pride of the soul” and remind it of its weakness and dependence before God Almighty.
The cage and the bird: A classic Sufi metaphor; The body is the physical cage, and the soul is the celestial bird. The value of the cage derives from the value of the bird; if the bird departs, the cage becomes a burden to be buried beneath the earth.
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means:
That life is a capital that cannot be squandered, and that heedlessness is the enemy that lies in wait for the traveler in the vastness of this world. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the “jurisprudence of vigilance” and the necessity of investing the dawn of old age to rectify what was lost in the darkness of youth. It emphasizes that whoever sows procrastination and error will reap only regret on a day when regret is of no avail, and that the wise person is the one who packs their belongings and joins the ranks of the righteous before the reins of choice slip.
And that life is the only capital that a person possesses. To buy eternal happiness, and that delaying repentance until the moment of helplessness is the ultimate loss. It is important in spiritual and moral education because it instills in the soul a “spirit of initiative” and warns against the mind’s reliance on wishful thinking, emphasizing that death will rob a person of their ability to apologize. The truly fortunate one is he who makes his speaking breath an argument for him, not against him, and realizes that “time is a sword” that shows no mercy to those who sleep in the caravan of departure.
