Sheikh Saadi’s advice to young people

Young man, embark on the path of obedience and repentance to God today, while you are in your prime. For the vigor and strength of youth will never return to a man whose head is crowned with gray (white hair).

Today you possess tranquility of heart and strength of body, and the field before you is wide and expansive. So hasten to seize the opportunity and strike the ball of success with the scepter of your resolve.

For fate has snatched from me (Sa’adi) a bygone era of happiness, and its days, in their greatness and radiance, were like the blessed Night of Power during the days of Ramadan.

Alas! I (Saadi) did not know the value of those precious days at the time, and I only realized their worth now, after I lost them and abandoned them so easily in the marketplace of heedlessness.

What effort can be expected from a decrepit donkey burdened with heavy loads? As for you, young man, go forth on your journey, for you ride a steed as swift as the wind.

For even if a broken cup is skillfully mended, it will never regain its original value or perfect clarity.

And now that the vessel of your life has fallen (youth has passed quickly, and old age has arrived), shattered due to negligence, you have no recourse but to try to mend what is broken, except through repentance.

So who commanded you to throw yourself into the raging depths of the Oxus River? But since you have already fallen into it, do not give up. Instead, stir and try to swim to safety. (If your youth has slipped away so quickly while you were heedless, it is because of your arrogance and pursuit of pleasures. But since you are now drowning in them, try to resist and break free. Strive with all your might to rid yourself of this psychological temptation through sincere worship of God.)

For you have squandered the pure waters of youth through your negligence. What recourse do you have now that the spring has dried up? There is nothing left but dust and the earth of humility and brokenness.

Since you have not achieved the foremost and attained the goals, like the other swift and agile competitors, do not sit idly by, blamed and defeated. Instead, continue your journey, even if you teeter on the brink of collapse and rising up

Even if those with swift steeds (high aspirations) have proceeded with confident, rapid steps, you—despite your weakness and frailty—must rise from your seat of inactivity and stride towards your goal.

Contextual and mystical footnotes

Youth and old age: Saadi reiterates the idea that “time” is the raw material of action; whoever squanders this raw material in youth must redouble their efforts in old age, despite their weakness.

The polo metaphor: A metaphor from the ancient sport of polo. The field is life, the ball is the chance for salvation, and the wise one is he who strikes the ball towards the divine goal before time runs out.

The broken cup (shkasteh qadah): a precise symbol of “the heart” or “life.” Repentance (baz bostan) mends the break and makes the vessel usable, but the “scar” of sin remains a constant reminder of humility, and the repentant seeker does not see himself as one who has never sinned.

Oyhun (River of Error): Saadi likens immersion in sins to falling into a raging river, and the wisdom here is “not to give up.” Despair of God’s mercy is certain drowning, and resistance (dast va pa zadan) opens the doors of divine assistance.

Water and dust (ablution and dry ablution): a powerful jurisprudential metaphor. Water represents the purity of innate nature and youth, while dust represents repentance in old age. If you missed the ablution of childhood, do not abandon the prayer of a lifetime; rather, perform dry ablution (tayammum) with the dust of humility and meekness, for dust is purification for those who cannot find water.

Falling and rising (Iftan and Khizan): The station of “struggle”; the gnostic does not require infallibility in the path, but rather “perseverance.” A stumbling walk towards truth is better than sitting soundly in falsehood.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that the passing of the spring of life and the loss of youthful opportunities do not justify inaction and despair. Rather, they compel one to redouble their efforts, even with faltering steps, to mend what has been broken in the vessel of life. It is important in spiritual and psychological development because it instills “active hope” in the heart of the repentant, emphasizing that whoever misses the “water of purity” must perform the “dry ablution of humility,” and that the stumbling walk towards the sanctuary of acceptance is better than the complacent lying in the valleys of heedlessness.
