Satan cannot prevail over one who is sincere to God, just as a tyrannical ruler cannot prevail over one who is bankrupt (for the poor have nothing to lose).
Do not lend to one who is negligent in his prayers,
even if his mouth is agape from extreme hunger.
For he who does not fulfill his religious obligations
will not care about repaying your debt.
He who today charges for burying two bodies when he has only buried one (the greedy traitor), do not rely on him.
Tomorrow, if you demand your due, he will mockingly say to you, “Go and uproot the radish from here,”
(meaning, he will deny your favor and expel you as if you were a stranger)
Explanation of the “Riddle” of the Gravedigger’s Verses (Radishes and Corpses)
These verses in Persian use an old folk saying about the dishonest “gravedigger,” where Saadi says: He who breaks his covenant with God (by not performing the obligatory prayers to God) or cheats in the most sacred of professions (burying the dead) will not be trustworthy with your money or your kindness towards him.
Arabic Translation
لا يَقوى الشيطانُ على مَن أخلصَ لله، كما لا يَقوى السُلطانُ (الجائر) على مَن أفلَسَ (لأنَّ الفَقيرَ لا يَملكُ ما يَخشى فُقدانهِ)
لا تُقرِض مَن يَتهاونُ في صلاتِه
وإن كان فاهُ مَفغوراً (مَفتوحاً) من شِدَّةِ الجُوع
فمَن لا يُؤدي فَرضَ اللهِ عليه
لَن يَهتمَّ بردِّ دَينِكَ إليك
ذاكَ الذي يتقاضى اليومَ ثَمنَ دَفنِ جثتين وهو لم يدفن إلا واحدة (أي الطمّاع الخائن)، لا تَعتمِد عليه؛
فغداً إذا طالبتَه بحقِّك، سيقول لكَ باستهزاء: (اذهب واقلع الفجل من هنا)، أي سيُنكر فضلَك ويطردك كأنك غريب
شرح “لغز” أبيات حَفّار القبور (الفجل والجثث)
هذه الأبيات في الفارسيّة تستخدم مِثالاً شعبياً قديماً عن “حفّار القبور” الغشاش، حيث يقول سعدي: إنَّ الذي يَخونُ العهدَ مع الله (بدون تأدية الصلاة لله، الواجبة) أو يغشُّ في أقدس المِهن (دَفن الموتى)، لن يكون أميناً على مالِك أو مَعروفِك له
