Do not be deceived by the enemy’s tricks (the deceptive appearance), nor be flattered by the excessive praise of the conceited. The former always tries to ensnare you through his cunning and schemes, but with a deceptive facade. The latter is a well-known trap for the greed of the person praising you. Praise pleases the fool like a lifeless corpse that grows fat (due to decomposition and increased gas within the body), but it soon rots.
Avoid listening to the praise of the speaker
who gains nothing from you.
For if you do not fulfill his greed (his purpose and what he wants from praising you) one day, he will mention your faults and enumerate them many times more than he offered you praise.
Arabic Translation
لا تَنخدع بحيل العَدو (المَظهر الخادع)، ولا يَغرنك كِثرة مَديح المغرورِ لكَ، فالأول، يحاول دائما الايقاع بكَ من خلال حيلهِ وتخطيطه لكن بمَظهر خادع لكَ، والثاني فَخٌّ معروف لجشع الشَخص الذي يَمدحك، فالثناء يُسعد الأحمق مثلما الجثة الهامدة التي تسمن (*بفعل التحلل وزيادة الغاز داخل جسم الجثة)، لكنها سرعان ما تفسد
تَجنّب الإستماع إلى ثَناء المُتحدثِ
الذي لا يَستفيد مَنك شيئاً
فإذا لم تُلبِّ طمعه (غرضه وما يريد من مدحهِ لك) يوماً ما
فسيذكر عيوبك ويعددها بأضعاف ما ذَكر من المدح لكَ

فریب دشمن مخور و غرور مداح مخر، که این دام زرق نهاده است و آن دامن طمع گشاده، احمق را ستایش خوش آید چون لاشه که در کعبش دمی فربه نماید
الا تا نشنوی مدح سخنگوی
که اندک مایه نفعی از تو دارد
که گر روزی مرادش بر نیاری
دو صد چندان عیوبت بر شمارد
