Don’t confide every secret to a friend, for you never know, a friend might become an enemy one day.
And don’t do all the harm you can inflict on an enemy, for an enemy might become a friend one day.
The secret you want to keep hidden, don’t share it with anyone, even a close friend. That friend has other close friends, and so on (meaning that your friend will pass your secret on to other friends, causing it to spread quickly and cease to be a secret).
Silence is better than revealing a secret. Don’t tell anyone, and don’t tell them, “Don’t divulge this secret.”
O wise one, stop the flow at the source (referring to secrets and sharing them). If the stream overflows (and becomes a river), it’s useless, and you can’t control it (meaning if the secret is shared with everyone, you can never control it).
A word spoken in private (secret or otherwise) should never be uttered
Unless this word is suitable for discussion in the council.
Arabic Translation
لا تأتمن كُلِ سِرٍ لديكَ لصديقٍ، فما تَدري، فربما يُصبح الصَديق عَدواً يَوماً ما
وكُل أذى تَستطيع الحاقهِ بالعدوِ، لاتَفعله كله، فَقد يُصبح العَدو صديقاً يوماً
السِر الذي تريده مَخفياً، لا تضعه مع أحدٍ، وإن كانَ صَديقاً مُخلصاً، فإن لذلك الصَديق أصدقاء مُخلصين أيضاً، وهكذا (يعني بأن الصديق سوف يضع سِركَ هذا في فم الاصدقاء الأخرين حتى ينتشر بسرعة ولن يبقى سراً)
السكوت أفضل من إفشاء السرِ لأحدٍ
فلا تطلع عليه أحد، وتقول له :لا تفصح عن هذا السر
يا سَليم العقلِ، أغلق الماء من المَنبع (يقصد الاسرار والحديث بها)
فإذا امتلأ الجدول بالماء (وأصبح نهراً) لافائدة ولا استطاعة لك للسيطرة عليه (اي اذا تم افشاء السر بين الجميع، لايمكنك السيطرة عليه ابدا)
كَلمة في الخفاءِ (سر أو غيره) لا ينبغي التحدث بهِ
إلا إذا كانت هذه الكلمة تصلح لحديثٍ في المجلسِ

هر آن سری که در سر داری با دوست در میان منه چه دانی که وقتی دشمن گردد و هر گزندی که توانی، به دشمن مرسان که باشد که وقتی دوست شود
رازی که نهان خواهی، با کس در میان منه وگرچه دوست مخلص باشد که مر آن دوست را نیز دوستان مخلص باشد، همچنین مسلسل
خامشی به که ضمیر دل خویش
با کسی گفتن و گفتن که مگوی
ای سلیم آب ز سرچشمه ببند
که چو پر شد نتوان بستن جوی
سخنی در نهان نباید گفت
که بر انجمن نشاید گفت
