A scholar without piety is like a blind man

The scholar who lacks piety is like a blind man carrying a torch (the light of the torch is useless because the one carrying it is truly blind).

He who wastes his life playing without benefit (here, playing means reading and learning, but without applying his knowledge, without adhering to it) has gained nothing in reality, for he has lost gold (true knowledge and piety).
