مَن يَجلس مع الأشرارِ، لن يرى الخير (/لن يرى خَيراً منهم، ولن يَتعلم سوى الشر)
لو جلسَ مَلاكٌ مع شيطانٍ
فالملاك سيتعلم القسوة، الخيانة والغدر من الشيطانِ
لن تَتعلم الخَير من الأشرارِ
فالذئب لن يخيط معطفاً من الفروِ
المثل القائل “الذئب لا يخيط معطفًا من الفرو” يعني أن طبيعة وطباع الأشرار والخبيثين ثابتة لا تتغير، ولا يمكن الوثوق بهم حتى لو حاولوا كسب الثقة بمظهر خادع ولطيف
إنه تلميح إلى حقيقة أن الشر يصيب الأشرار، وأن الذئب لا يخيط معطفًا من الفرو، وهو تحذير من الانخداع بالمظاهر، ومن ضرورة معرفة الأعداء معرفة حقيقية
و أن العدو الذي أظهر سلوكًا سيئًا في الماضي، وكانت له علاقات سلبية، قد يدّعي اللطف والرحمة ظاهريًا، لكن لا يمكن الوثوق به بأي حال من الأحوال
في هذا المثل، يرمز “الذئب” إلى الشخص العدائي والخطير بطبيعته، بينما يمثل “معطف الفرو” الشخص الذي يُظهر مظهرًا لطيفًا ومخادعًا
