One of the kings was afflicted with a terrible disease, and his condition was deteriorating rapidly. The wise men of Greece agreed that there was no cure for this ailment except the bile of a man possessing certain characteristics, so the king ordered that such a man be found.
They found a farmer’s son who fit the description given by the wise men. The king summoned his father and mother and showered them with boundless riches. The judge ruled that shedding the blood of one of the subjects for the king’s safety was permissible.
The executioner (the one who beheads) prepared to carry out the sentence. The young man raised his head to the sky and smiled. The king asked him, “In your current situation, what makes you smile?”
He replied, “Sons usually rely on their fathers and mothers, and they take their grievances to the judge and seek justice from the ruler. But now, my father and mother have handed me over to worldly ruin and death, the judge has ruled for my execution, and the ruler sees his own interest in my killing. There is no refuge except in God Almighty.
To whom, then, shall I turn for protection from your hand,
and from whom shall I seek justice from your hand as well?”
The king’s heart was moved by these words, and tears welled up in his eyes. He said, “My death is preferable to shedding the blood of an innocent man.”; He kissed the young man’s head and eyes, embraced him, bestowed upon him countless blessings, and set him free. It is said that the king was cured that very week.
I still think about that verse spoken by an elephant keeper on the banks of the Nile:
If you knew the plight of the ant beneath your feet,
It is like your own plight beneath the foot of an elephant.
Arabic Translation
كان أحد الملوك مصابٌ بمرضٍ فظيعٍ، وترك ذكره أولى، أتفق حكماء اليونان على أن لهذا الداء لا دواء إلا مرارة إنسان موصوف بصفات معينة، فأمر بطلبها
فوجدوا ابن فلاح على تلك الصفة التي قالها الحُكماء، و دعا أباه وأمه وأرضاهما بنعم لا حدود لها، وأفتى القاضي بأن سفك دم أحد الرعية لسلامة الملك جائزٍ
همَّ الجلاد (الذي يقطع الرؤوس)، فرفع الفتى رأسه نحو السماء وتبسم، سأله الملك: في حالتكَ هذه، ما سبب الضحك؟
قال: دلال الأبناء على الآباء والأمهات، ويحملون الدعوى إلى القاضي ويطلبون العدل من السلطان
أما الآن فقد سلماني أبي وأمي للملذات الدنيوية (الزائلة) مقابل دمي، وأفتى القاضي بالقتل، والسلطان يرى مصلحته في هلاكي؛ فلا ملجأ إلا الله عز وجل
فإلى من أرفع دعائي من ظلم يدك
وأطلب العدل منه، منكَ ومن يدك أيضاً؟
اضطرب قلب السلطان من هذا الكلام ودارت الدموع في عينيه وقال: هلاكي أولى من سفك دم بريء، فقبل رأسه وعينيه وعانقه ومنحه نعماً لا تُحصى وأطلقه، ويقال إنه شفي (الملك) في تلك الأسبوع
ما زلت أفكر في ذلك البيت الذي قاله راعٍ للفيلةِ على شاطئ نهر النيل
لو علمت بحال النملةِ تحت قدميكَ
فهي كحالك وأنتَ تحت قدم فيلٍ

یکی را از ملوک مرضی هایل بود که اِعادتِ ذکرِ آن ناکردن اَوْلیٰ. طایفهٔ حکمایِ یونان متفّق شدند که مر این درد را دوایی نیست مگر زَهْرهٔ آدمی به چندین صفت موصوف. بفرمود طلب کردن
دهقانپسری یافتند بر آن صورت که حکیمان گفته بودند، پدرش را و مادرش را بخواند و به نعمتِ بیکران خشنود گردانیدند و قاضی فَتویٰ داد که خونِ یکی از رعیّت ریختن سلامتِ پادشه را، روا باشد، جلّاد قصد کرد، پسر سر سویِ آسمان بر آورد و تبسّم کرد، ملک پرسیدش که در این حالت چه جای خندیدن است؟ گفت: نازِ فرزندان بر پدران و مادران باشد و دعوی پیشِ قاضی برند و داد از پادشه خواهند، اکنون پدر و مادر به علّت حُطامِ دنیا مرا به خون درسپردند و قاضی به کشتن فَتویٰ داد و سلطان مصالحِ خویش اندر هلاکِ من همیبیند؛ به جز خدای عَزَّوَجَلَّ، پناهی نمیبینم
پیشِ که بر آورم ز دستت فریاد؟
هم پیشِ تو از دستِ تو گر خواهم داد
سلطان را دل از این سخن به هم بر آمد و آب در دیده بگردانید و گفت: هلاکِ من اولیٰتر است از خونِ بیگناهی ریختن. سر و چشمش ببوسید و در کنار گرفت و نعمتِ بیاندازه بخشید و آزاد کرد، و گویند هم در آن هفته شفا یافت
هم چنان در فکرِ آن بیتم که گفت پیلبانی بر لبِ دریایِ نیل
«زیر پایت گر بدانی حالِ مور
هم چو حالِ توست زیر پایِ پیل»
