The generous person who eats and gives to others from what he possesses is better than the devout person who fasts and hoards wealth without giving it away.
Whoever abandons desires and engages in asceticism and worship out of greed for the approval of people (their praise, while he does not help others, and not out of greed for God’s praise and acceptance of his obedience) has fallen into the trap of forbidden desires instead of distancing himself from them.

إنَّ الكَريم (الجَواد) الذي يَأكل ويُعطي للأخرين مِن ما يملك، خيرٌ من العابدِ الذي يَصومُ ويَكنز الأموال ولا يعطيها، فمَن تَركَ الشهواتِ وأشتغل بالزهد والعبادةِ طَمعاً في قُبولِ الخَلْقِ (ثنائهم عليهِ، وهو لايساعد الأخرين، وليس طمعاً في ثناء الله عليه وقبول طاعتهِ)، فقد سَقطَ/وقع في شهوةٍ الحرام، بدلا من الابتعاد منها
العابدُ الذي لا يعتزلُ في صومعتهِ لأجل الله
ماذا يرى ذلك المَسكينُ في مرآةٍ مُظلمة؟
يرى سَعدي أنَّ “الجُود” عِبادة إجتماعية، بينما “الزُهد للسمعةِ” هو شركٌ خفي بالله

جوانمرد که بخورد و بدهد، به از عابدی که روزه دارد و بنهد، هر که ترک شهوات از بهر قبول خلق داده است، از شهوتی حلال در شهوتی حرام افتاده است
عابد که نه از بهر خدا گوشه نشیند
بیچاره در آیینهٔ تاریک چه بیند
