Ten people may eat at one table, but two dogs cannot bear to eat the same carrion together.
The greedy man is hungry even if he owns the whole world, while the content man is satisfied with a morsel of bread.
And the wise have said: Wealth through contentment is better than wealth through money.
A small stomach is filled with just one loaf of bread (the ascetic is content with little), and the earth’s bounty does not fill the narrow eye (the greedy man is not satisfied with the earth’s treasures).
When my father’s time was near, he gave me this advice and passed away:
He said, “Desire is a fire, so beware of it, and do not hasten yourself to the fire of Hell.
For that fire, which you cannot bear, bear it, for with patience you will extinguish that fire today.”
Arabic Translation
عَشرة من الخلقِ يأكلون على مائدةٍ واحدةٍ، و لكن كلبان لا يَتحملان الاكل سوية من جيفة واحدة
الحَريص جائع ولو كان العالم كله له، والقانع شَبعان بكسرة خبز
والحكماء قالوا: الغِنى بالقناعةِ، خَير من الغنى بالمالِ
الأمعاء الضَيقة تَمتلئ بخبزةٍ فقط (الإنسان الزاهد يقتنع بالقليل)
ونعمة سطح الأرض لا تملأ العَين الضيقة (الانسان الطَماع كنوز الأرض لاتقنعه)
عندما قرب أجل أبي في الحياةِ
أوصاني بهذه النصيحةِ ومضى
فقال بأن الشہوة هي نارٌ، فاحذرها
ولا تُسرع بَنفسك إلى نار جَهنم
لتلكَ النارِ، التي لاطاقة لك لتَحَمُلها
تحمل، فبالصبرِ تُطفي تلك النار اليوم

ده آدمی بر سفرهای بخورند و دو سگ بر مرداری با هم به سر نبرند
حریص با جهانی گرسنه است و قانع به نانی سیر
حکما گفتهاند: توانگری به قناعت، به از توانگری به بضاعت
رودهٔ تنگ به یک نانِ تهی پُر گردد
نعمتِ روی زمین پر نکند دیدهٔ تنگ
پدر چون دورِ عمرش منقضی گشت
مرا این یک نصیحت کرد و بُگذشت
که شهوت آتش است از وی بپرهیز
به خود بَر آتشِ دوزخ مکُن تیز
در آن آتش نداری طاقت سوز
به صبر آبی بر این آتش زن امروز
