There were two princes in Egypt, one pursued knowledge, while the other amassed wealth, in the end, the scholar became the leading scholar of his time, and the wealthy one became the ruler of Egypt
The wealthy prince looked down upon the scholar with contempt and said, “I have attained power and authority, while you remain in poverty.”
The scholar replied, “My brother, it is my duty to frequently thank God (may His name be glorified and exalted) for His blessings, for I have inherited, the inheritance of the prophets, that is, knowledge, and you inherited the inheritance of Pharaoh (one of the kings of Egypt, or generally any king of Egypt is called Pharaoh) and Haman (Pharaoh’s minister), that is, the kingdom of Egypt
I am that ant that they trample underfoot
I am not the wasp whose sting they complain of
So how can I not be grateful for this blessing,
when I do not use the power I possess to harm people?
Arabic Translation
كَانَ هناكَ أَمِيرَانِ فِي مِصْر، أَحَدُهُمَا تَعَلَّمَ الْعِلْمَ وَالْآخَرُ جَمَعَ الْمَالَ، فِي الْنهايةِ، أَصْبَحَ مُتعلم العلمِ عَالِمَ عَصْرِهِ، وَأَصْبَحَ من جَمعَ المال ملكاً على مِصْرَ
فكانَ الغنى يَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْعالمِ بِعَيْنِ الاحْتِقَارِ، وَقَالَ: أَنَا وَصَلْتُ إِلَى سَدة الحُكمِ والسُّلْطَانِ، وَأنتَ بَقِيَتَ فِي الْفَقْرِ
فَرَدَ الفَقيهُ: يَا أَخِي، الإكثار من شُكْرُ نِعْمَةِ اللهِ (عَزَّ تعالى اسْمُهُ) علىَ واجبٌ عَلَيََّ، فأني وَرِثْتُ مِيرَاثَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، أَيِ الْعِلْمَ، وَأَنْتَ وَرِثْتَ مِيرَاثَ فِرْعَوْنَ (أحد ملوك مصر، أو بصورة عامة يطلق أي ملك لمصر بالفرعون) وَهَامَانَ (وزير فرعون) أَيِ مُلْكَ مِصْرَ
أَنَا تِلْكَ النَّمْلَةُ الَّتِي يَدُوسُونَهَا بِأَقْدَامِهِمْ
لَسْتُ الدَّبُّورَ الَّذِي يَشْكُونَ مِنْ لَدْغِهِ
فكَيْفَ لا أَشْكُرُ هَذِهِ النِّعْمَةَ؟
عندما لا أستخدم ما أملك من قوةٍ لِإِيذَاءِ النَّاسِ
Persian text
دو امیرزاده در مصر بودند، یکی علم آموخت و دیگری مال اندوخت. عاقبةالاَمر آن یکی عَلّامهٔ عصر گشت و این یکی عزیزِ مصر شد
پس این توانگر به چشمِ حقارت در فقیه نظر کردی و گفتی: من به سلطنت رسیدم و این همچنان در مَسْکَنَت بمانده است.
گفت: ای برادر! شکرِ نعمتِ باری، عَزَّاِسْمُهُ، همچنان افزونتر است بر من که میراثِ پیغمبران یافتم یعنی علم و تو را میراثِ فرعون و هامان رسید یعنی مُلکِ مصر
من آن مورم که در پایم بمالند
نه زنبورم که از دستم بنالند
کجا خود شُکرِ این نعمت گزارم
که زورِ مردمآزاری ندارم؟
