The dervish that not asking even from a generous person

I heard a dervish suffering greatly from poverty, sewing a patch onto his rag, and saying to his poor heart, to console it constantly:

“We are content with dry bread and patched clothes,

bearing our own hardship is better than bearing the favor of others.”

Someone said to him: “Why don’t you visit so-and-so?” In this city, where he is of noble character and widespread generosity, and determined to serve the respected people, and because of his generosity his name has become well-known in the hearts of all, and if he knew your situation as it is, he would consider preserving the dignity of the honorable (those like you) a great act of generosity and would regard it as a gain for himself (elevating your status is better than your current situation).

He said: Be silent, for death in misery is better than a need presented to me from other (even the generous and the kind one)

It is better for me to mend the patches myself and endure this (patchwork) garment with patience than to have it written that I took a patch from others (who are called the masters of the people) to mend my garment.

Truly, it is equivalent to the torment of Hell (for me) to going to Paradise through the intercession of a neighbor.
