A man lost his son among the camel’s belongings and travel baggage, so he began searching the caravan in the darkness of night.
He asked at every tent and searched in every direction until, in the gloom, he found a light—his son.
When he returned to his companions in the caravan, he was heard saying to the caravan leader,
“Do you know how I found the way?” To the light of my eye (my friend/my son)?
I used to look at everyone I met and say to myself, “This is him”
And for this reason, those with pure hearts seek out all creation and pursue everyone, hoping to one day meet a truly righteous person (a saint among them).
For they bear burdens and hardships for the sake of winning over a single heart, and they endure the sting of thorns, yearning for a single flower
Cultural and Sufi Marginal Notes
Tariki va Roshna’i (Darkness and Light): Sa’di employs a mystical paradox here; the boy is the “light” sought amidst the darkness of ignorance or heedlessness. In Sufi literature, loss symbolizes the fragmentation of the soul, and encounter symbolizes attaining knowledge.
پیش آمدم گفتم اوست: This phrase alludes to the idea of ”unity” in vision; The seeker sees in every manifestation of existence a trace of the First Beloved, and therefore does not despise anyone he encounters, for they may be the One he seeks or the One he longs to meet.
The People of the Heart (Ahl al-Dal): This refers to the gnostics, the wise, who endure the harm inflicted by others (the thorns) in the hope of attaining God’s love or meeting a perfect human being (the rose).
This story/wisdom from Saadi Shirazi’s book Bustan means that sincerity in seeking necessitates humility and not belittling any being. It is important in moral development because it teaches the seeker patience in the face of harm from people and service to them, hoping that one of them may be the means to reach the Truth (God).

فَقَدَ رَجُلٌ ابْنَهُ بَيْنَ أَمْتِعَةِ الرَّاحِلَةِ وَأَحْمَالِ السَّفَرِ، فَطَفِقَ يَجُوبُ الْقَافِلَةَ فِي سَوَادِ اللَّيْلِ يَبْحَثُ عَنْهُ
فكَانَ يَسْأَلُ عِنْدَ كُلِّ خَيْمَةٍ وَيَسْعَى فِي كُلِّ اتِّجَاهٍ حَتَّى اهْتَدَى فِي ظُلْمَةِ اللَّيْلِ إِلَى ذَلِكَ الضِّيَاءِ، وهو وَلَدِهِ
وَلَمَّا عَادَ إِلَى رُفَقَائِهِ فِي الْقَافِلَةِ
سُمِعَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ لِقائد القافلة
أَتَدْرِي كَيْفَ وَجَدْتُ الطَّرِيقَ إِلَى قُرَّةِ عَيْنِي (صديقي)؟
لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى كُلِّ مَنْ يُقَابِلُنِي فَأَقُولُ فِي نَفْسِي: هَذَا هُوَ
وَلِهَذَا السَّبَبِ، يَتَفَقَّدُ أَهْلُ الْقُلُوبِ جَمِيعَ الْخَلْقِ وَيَسْعَوْنَ خَلْفَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ، عَسَى أَنْ يَلْتَقُوا يَوْمًا بِرَجُلٍ حَقِيقِيٍّ (وَلِيٍّ مِنَ الأَوْلِيَاءِ)
فإِنَّهُمْ يَحْمِلُونَ الأَثْقَالَ وَالْمَشَقَّاتِ مِنْ أَجْلِ اسْتِمَالَةِ قَلْبٍ وَاحِدٍ، وَيَتَحَمَّلُونَ وَخْزَ الأَشْوَاكِ طَمَعًا فِي الحصول على زَهْرَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ

تاریکی و روشنایی (الظلمة والضياء): يستخدم سعدي هنا مفارقة عرفانية؛ فالولد هو “النور” الذي يُبحث عنه وسط ظلام الجهل أو الغفلة، و في الأدب الصوفي، يرمز الضياع هنا إلى تشتت النفس، واللقاء يرمز إلى الوصول إلى المعرفة
هر آن کس که پیش آمدم گفتم اوست: هذه العبارة تلمح إلى فكرة “الوحدة” في الرؤية؛ حيث يرى السالك في كل مظهر من مظاهر الوجود أثرًا للمحبوب الأول، فلا يَحتقر أحدًا، يراه، لأنه قد يكون “المراد” أو المطلوب لقاءه
أهل القلوب (اهل دل): يقصد بهم العارفين، الحكماء، الذين يتحملون أذى الخلق (الأشواك) طمعًا في الوصول إلى مَحبة الله أو لقاء إنسان كامل (الوردة)
هذه القصة/الحكمة من سعدي الشيرازي في كتابه بوستان تعني أن الصدق في الطلب يستوجب التواضع وعدم إستصغار أي كائن، ولها أهمية في التربية السلوكية لأنها تعلم السالك الصبر على أذى الناس وخدمتهم، طمعًا في أن يكون أحدهم هو الوسيلة للوصول إلى الحق (الله)

شبانگه بگردید در قافله
ز هر خیمه پرسید و هر سو شتافت
به تاریکی آن روشنایی بیافت
چو آمد بر مردم کاروان
شنیدم که میگفت با ساروان
ندانی که چون راه بردم به دوست!
هر آن کس که پیش آمدم گفتم اوست
از آن اهل دل در پی هر کسند
که باشد که روزی به مردی رسند
برند از برای دلی بارها
خورند از برای گلی خارها
