I heard that in those days there was an old sheikh who, in his old age, wished to take a young wife.
So he married a beautiful girl named Jawhara and hid her like a pearl in a box from the eyes of the people.
Part of the wedding rites was for him to see the girl, but on the day of consummation, he was unable to perform the act.
He tried again, but still couldn’t, for a young girl cannot fulfill her duty except with the strength of youth. (Saadi here uses the new steel to pierce the clothes, to refer to the girl’s virginity.)
So he began complaining to his friends and making excuses, such as, “Despite the cleanliness of the house and my possessions, this wicked girl’s eye was not satisfied, and she left the house.”
A great deal of strife and discord arose between the husband and wife, until it reached the police chief and the judge. Saadi said,
“After the sheikh’s affair was exposed and the scandal ensued, it is not the girl’s fault. You are the one whose hand trembles (an old man cannot fulfill a girl’s duty), so how can you complete the marriage? (Saadi used the expression “pearl” to refer to the girl’s genitals.)
Great benefit would be gained from the sea, if there were no fear of the raging waves.
And the company of the rose would be pleasant, if there were no annoyance from the thorns.
Yesterday I strutted like a peacock in the garden of union (the union of the beloved/companion)
And today, from his separation, I writhe like a snake.
Arabic Translation
سمعت بأنه في هذه الأيامِ كان هناك شيخاً كبيراً بالسنِ
تَمنى في شيخوختهِ أن يتخذ له زوجة شابة
فتزوجَ بفتاةٍ جميلة اسمها جَوهرة
وأخفاها كلؤلؤة في صندوقٍ من أعين الناسِ
فكان من ضمن مراسيم العرسِ أن يرى الفتاة
لكن في اليوم للدخول عليها، لم يستطع القيام بالنكاحِ
حاول مرة أخرى، ولكنه لم يستطع
فالفتاة الشابة لايمكن القيام بواجبها الا بقوة الشباب (سعدي أستخدم هنا الفولاذ الجديد كي يستطيع خرق الثياب، للإشارة الى بكارة الفتاة)
فبدأ الشكوى للأصدقاء وأصطنع الأعذار
من قبيل بأنه على الرغم من نظافة المنزل، وما لدي من ممتلكات، عين هذا الشقية لم تقتنع، وغادرت البيت
فنشبت حَربٌ وفتنةٌ بين الزوجِ والزوجةِ، كثيراً
حتى وصلت إلى رئيس الشرطة والقاضي، فقال سعدي
بَعد افتضاح أمر الشيخ والفضيحة، فليس بخطأ الفتاة
أنت الذي ترتعد يدك (كبير السن لا تستطيع القيام بواجب الفتاة)، فكيف تستطيع اتمام النكاح؟ (سعدي أستخدم تعبير اللؤلؤة للإشارة لأعضاء الفتاة التناسلية)
فائدة كبيرة تجنى من البحرِ، لو لم يكن هناك خوف من الامواج العاتية
وصحبة الوردة لطيفةٌ، لو لم يكن هناك إزعاج من الشوكِ
بالأمس كنت أتبختر كطاووسٍ في حديقة الوصلِ (وصل الحبيب/الرفيق)
واليوم من فراقهِ، أتلوي كالثعبان

شنیدهام که در این روزها کهن پیری
خیال بست به پیرانه سر که گیرد جفت
بخواست دخترکی خوبروی گوهر نام
چو درج گوهرش از چشم مردمان بنهفت
چنان که رسم عروسی بود تماشا بود
ولی به حملهٔ اوّل عصای شیخ بخفت
کمان کشید و نزد بر هدف که نتوان دوخت
مگر به خامهٔ فولاد جامهٔ هنگفت
به دوستان گله آغاز کرد و حجت ساخت
که خان و مان من این شوخ دیده پاک برفت
میان شوهر و زن جنگ و فتنه خاست چنان
که سر به شحنه و قاضی کشید و سعدی گفت
پس از خلافت و شنعت گناه دختر نیست
تو را که دست بلرزد گهر چه دانی سفت
سود دریا نیک بودی گر نبودی بیم موج
صحبت گل خوش بدی گر نیستی تشویش خار
دوش چون طاووس می نازیدم اندر باغ وصل
دیگر امروز از فراق یار می پیچم چو مار
