A thief entered the house of a hermit, searched, and found nothing to steal. The thief was distressed, and the hermit, knowing this, threw the mat he slept on in the thief’s path so he wouldn’t leave empty-handed.
I heard that those who follow the path of God (the believers, the righteous)
never burdened their enemies (they never did anything to anger them, nor did they harbor resentment).
So how can you attain these levels (the levels of the righteous)
while you are in conflict and strife with your friends?
You must be on friendly terms with the righteous (the purest of God’s creation, the righteous), whether in their presence or absence. Do not be like those who speak of your faults behind your back and exaggerate their praise to your face.
In your presence, they are like docile lambs,
but behind your back, they are like wolves that prey on people.
He who brings you the faults of others and enumerates them in your presence
will surely bring your faults to others.
Arabic Translation
دَخل لصٌّ بيت زاهدٍ، فَبحثَ فلم يَجد شيئاً (ليسرقه)، فاغتمَّ اللص، فعلم الزاهدُ بذلكَ، فألقى الحصير الذي كان ينامُ عليهِ في طريق اللص، كي لا يَخرج خائباً
سمعتُ، أن أصحاب طريق الله (المؤمنين، الصالحين)
ما ضيّقوا صَدر أعدائهم قط (لم يقوموا بعملٍ يغضب الاعداء، ويحملوا في داخلهم حقد)
فكيف لك أن تبلغ هذه المقامات (مقامات الصالحين)
وأنت مع أصدقائك، في خصومة ونزاع؟
يجب أن تكون على ودٍّ مع أهل الصلاحِ (أصفى خلق ألله، الصالحين)، سواءاً في الحضور أو في الغيابِ، ليس كَمن (كمثل الذين) يتحدثوا عن عيوبك في غيابك، ويبالغوا (في مدحكَ) في المدح أمامك (حضورك)
أمامكَ (يكونوا) كالحمل (الخروف) المُسالمِ
وفي غيابكَ، كالذئب الذي ينهش بالناس
من يأتيك بعيوب الآخرين ويَعدّدها (أمامكَ)
فبالتأكيد، سيحمل عيوبك إلى الآخرين

دزدی به خانهٔ پارسایی در آمد؛ چندان که جست چیزی نیافت، دلتنگ شد، پارسا خبر شد، گلیمی که بر آن خفته بود در راه دزد انداخت تا محروم نشود
شنیدم که مردانِ راهِ خدای
دلِ دشمنان را نکردند تنگ
تو را کی میسّر شود این مَقام
که با دوستانت خلاف است و جنگ؟
مودّتِ اهلِ صفا، چه در روی و چه در قفا، نه چنان کز پست عیب گیرند و پیشت بیش میرند
در برابر، چو گوسپندِ سلیم
در قفا، همچو گرگِ مردمخوار
هر که عیبِ دگران پیشِ تو آورد و شمرد
بیگمان، عیبِ تو پیشِ دگران خواهد برد
