No one truly appreciates the value of days of ease and joy until fate casts them into the depths of suffering and hardship.
The winter of a poor man (a dervish) in a year of drought and famine seems easy compared to that of someone who possesses wealth and status. (The poor man is unconcerned with the year of drought and famine, for he is accustomed to such a state, while the rich man, possessing wealth and status, cannot endure it.)
And the healthy person, if afflicted with pain, will not taste the sweetness of sleep while groaning in agony, because he did not truly fulfill his duty of gratitude to his Creator for the blessing of health when he enjoyed well-being.
If you are resilient in adversity (quick to act), swift in your steps, then let your gratitude for this be for God, for not places you with the weak and feeble.
The young man should show compassion to the elderly, and the strong and powerful should have mercy on the helpless and destitute.
How can those who live on the banks of the Oxus River possibly understand the value of its abundant flowing water? Ask those parched souls, worn down by the scorching sun, who felt the intense thirst and the desperate need to quench it.
For the Arab sitting on the banks of the cool waters of the Tigris River bears no concern for the thirsty ones languishing in the arid desert of Zarud (near Mecca).
Only the one who truly understands the value of health is the one consumed by the flames of fever for a long time, confined to his bed, powerless to help himself.
How can you perceive the long, dark night when you toss and turn in comfort and luxury on your soft bed?
Consider the plight of one tossed about by fever, rising and falling with the severity of his illness. Only the sick truly understand the bitterness of the night’s length and the slowness of its minutes.
The master that awoke peacefully to the sound of the drum at dawn, how then, could he possibly comprehend of the terrors of the night faced by the vigilant guardian?
Cultural and Mystical Context
Social Gratitude: In Saadi’s philosophy, gratitude is not merely verbal expression, but an act manifested in compassion. He who does not show mercy to the weak is as if he has denied the blessing of strength.
Water Metaphors (Oxus and Zarud): Saadi uses geography to illustrate a “psychological truth”; The Oxus River (one of the largest rivers in Central Asia) represents immersion in luxury and sensory numbness, while Zarud (a barren desert region) represents need and necessity. The gnostic is the one who “witnesses” Zarud’s thirst while sitting on the banks of the Oxus.
The relativity of time (the length of the night): Saadi indicates that time is a “state of the heart”; the night of the pampered is but a few seconds, while the night of the afflicted is an eternity. In mysticism, only those who have tasted the “bitterness of separation” can truly feel the “night of alienation.”
The master and the guard: A powerful social metaphor reflecting Saadi’s critique of the affluent class, which overlooks the human “reasons” that provide it with security. Your safe awakening is the fruit of someone else’s sleepless nights.
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that appreciating the value of blessings depends on remembering the suffering of those who lack them and empathizing with them. It is important in building a compassionate and spiritually vigilant character because it warns against the “heedlessness of luxury” that dulls the sense of the suffering of others. It emphasizes that gratitude for well-being is shown through mercy towards the weak and patience for the elderly. The truly fortunate one is he who sees the Giver of blessings reflected in the needs of the deprived.
