A scholar was asked: If someone is sitting alone with a beautiful face, the doors are closed, the witnesses are asleep, and his desires are strong, and lust is overwhelming, and as the Arabic proverb says, “The dates are ripe, but the watchman (the owner of the date orchard) doesn’t object,” can he, with the strength of his piety, refrains from committing a forbidden act?
The scholar responded to the questioner, saying that even if one were to escape the allure of beautiful face, one would not escape the suspicion of those who think ill of one another.
And even if a person were to escape the evil within themselves, they would not escape the suspicion of the accuser.
(The point is clear: even if one has not committed any wrongdoing, those who always think ill of them, will never be safe from their tongues.)
Perhaps a person can close his door and sit in peace, but one cannot silence the tongues of others (which will always speak ill of him).
Arabic Translation
سُئل أحدُ العُلماءِ: إن كان أحدهم جَالسٌ مع وَجه جميلٍ في خلوةٍ، والأبوابُ مُغلقةٌ، والشهود نائمون، والنَفس تطلب (النَفس رَاغبة)، والشَهوة غَالبةٌ، وكما يَقول المثل العَربي: التَمر يَانعٌ والناطور (صاحب بستان التمرِ) لا يمانع/لايَمنع؛ فهل يستطيع أن يَتحمل بقوة التقوى التي لديه ولا يرتكب شيئا محرماً؟
فَردَ العالِمُ على الشخص الذي طرح السؤال، بأنه إن سلمَ من فتنة الوجوه الحَسنةِ، فمن سيئي الظن، لن يَسلم
و اِنْ سَلِمَ اْلإنسانُ مِنْ سُوءِ نَفْسِهِ
فَمِنْ سُوءِ ظَنِّ الْمُدَّعی لَیْسَ (لن) یَسْلَمُ
(البيت واضح، حتى وإن لم يرتكب اي خطأ، فالذين يظنون فيه سوءاً دائما، لن يسلم من لسانهم ابداً)
ربما يمكن للشخص أن يغلق الباب على نفسه ويجلس بسلامٍ
لكن، لا يمكن إغلاق ألسنةُ الناسِ (في أن تمسه بالسوء دائماً)

يکی را از علما پرسیدند که: یکی با ماهروییست در خلوت نشسته و درها بسته و رقیبان خفته و نفس طالب و شهوت غالب، چنان که عرب گوید: اَلتَّمْرُ یانِعٌ وَ النّٰاطورُ غَیْرُ مانِعٍ؛ هیچ باشد که به قوّتِ پرهیزگاری از او به سلامت بماند؟
گفت: اگر از مهرویان به سلامت بماند از بدگویان نماند
و اِنْ سَلِمَ اْلإنسانُ مِنْ سُوءِ نَفْسِهِ
فَمِنْ سُوءِ ظَنِّ الْمُدَّعی لَیْسَ یَسْلَمُ
شاید پسِ کار خویشتن بنشستن
لیکن نتوان زبانِ مردم بستن
