What is not destined for you, you will not attain. And what is destined for you, will find you, wherever you may be. (Death will overtake you even if you are in fortified towers.)
Have you not heard that Alexander the Great fought battles in distant lands, enduring great hardships, and only those destined to drink from the water of life did so?
(But fate did not favor him; he died before completing what he had striven for with hardship and effort. The water of life or the elixir of eternal life is certainly an illusion, but here Saadi means that everything has an inevitable end that will come to you at a known time, neither earlier nor later.)
Arabic Translation
ما لَم يُكتَب لكَ القدرَ من شيء، لن تنالَهُ يَدكَ، وما كُتِبَ لكَ القَدر مِن شيء، سيُدرِكُكَ أينما كُنت
(*المَوت يُدرككم ولو كُنتم في بُروج مُحصنة)
ألَم تَسمع أنَّ الإسكندرَ المقدوني، قد خاضَ المَعارك في أراضي بعيدةٍ
وتَحملَ المَشاقَّ الصِعاب، ولَم يَشرَب مِن (ماءِ الحياةِ) إلا مَن كُتِبَ لهُ الشُّرب؟
(لكن القدر لم يَسعفه، مات قبل أن يُكمل ما سعى من أجلهِ بمشقةٍ وجهدٍ، ماء الحياة أو أكسير الحياة الدائمة هو وَهَمٌ بالتأكيد، لكن هنا سعدي يقصد بأن لكل شيء أجل مَحتوم سوف يأتيكم في وقت معلوم، لا يتقدم، ولا يتأخر)
