4-A Hypothetical Poetic debate about one of Hafez Shirazis verse

Part Four

Fourth part takes us from the realm of metaphysics and great Sufi and national sacrifices, to delve into the depths of popular consciousness and satirical realism, where simple writers and unknown poets intervene to raise the voice of the “wise common man” against the Hatimite claims (gift and bestowal) of the great poets; They mock the “sanctity of the mole” in the age of medical surgery, replacing Samarkand and Bukhara with authentic and nutritious local dishes (kishk and qara), declaring in a sincere and profound language that true poverty is better than empty promises (Harfi Muft) that have no basis in reality.

English Translation

Mohammad Abadzadeh, a satirical poet

If that Turk from Shiraz were to bestow his favor and possess my heart,
How fortunate he would be, for he would have gained the whole world!

But I would not give him my soul, nor the soul of my soul, nor the real estate of Bukhara
Am I a real estate office? What is the meaning of these despicable acts?

And his Indian mole, it no longer has any value whatsoever
After cosmetic surgeries started removing all moles 😂

So no one generously gave away property, nor did anyone relinquish a hand or a foot
All that happened was that they just wanted to waste our time with this poetry

A satirical poet

If only that Turk from Shiraz would grant me his favor and possess my heart
Then tell him May he return to me my poor, broken heart.

For how can a lover’s heart bear or accommodate all this (poetry),
when every passerby on its path gives it his heart?

An unknown poet

If that Turk from Shiraz would grant me his favor and possess my heart,
I would give his Indian mole a mann (مَن, unit of weight) of kashk and two mannas of qara.

(Kashk and qara: popular dried and sour dairy products in Iranian villages) 😂

For the head, the hand, and the body, we know, are destined for the dust of the grave and oblivion
And we know that Samarkand and Bukhara belong to others.

And if the Angel of Death (Azrael) will surely rob us of our spirit and limbs,
so what will be more beautiful and beneficial to us then than mannas from kashk and qara? 😂

Anonymous poet

If that Turk from Shiraz would grant me his favor and possess my heart,
I would bestow upon his Indian mole the throne of the soul of souls.

Is that Turk from Shiraz greedy or destitute,
that Hafez would grant him such a gift (Samarkand and Bukhara)? 😂

For he who can capture and possess hearts has no need for worn-out bodies,
so that Saeb might bestow upon him his head, hand, body, and foot.

Anonymous poet

What precious thing could equal the stature of the Turk of Shiraz?
Even if I were to give all that I possess, even my very soul and being?

Blessed is he who gives of what he possesses, and even of what he does not possess,
In the manner of Sheikh Shiraz (Hafiz), who gave everything.

If only that Turk from Shiraz would bestow his favor and possess my heart,
I would give his Indian mole all the dominion and kingdom of the world.

Anonymous poet

Everyone who gives of something gives only according to his understanding and perception
This one gives the soul, that one gives the soul of the soul, and the other gives nothing at all.

One gives freely, free from ulterior motives, while the other gives in defiance (for the sake of defiance/committing sins)
Each, for the sake of this heart, gives two hundred times more.

If only that Turk from Shiraz possessed a truly pure heart,
he would realize that he, too, would give something simple in return as a favor

Anonymous poet

Everyone who gives something gives it according to their own assumptions and imagination (their claim)
This one gives a city, that one a body, and another a soul and limbs.

But a person like me, who owns nothing in this world or the next,
should not speak without thinking, for he has no power to carry out his words.

Anonymous poet

If only The beloved, radiant, and graceful one, sought my affection and love,
for this kindness, I would give him all my limbs and organs.

For whoever gives something, gives it from his own wealth and possessions
Unlike Hafiz, who generously gave away Samarkand and Bukhara; he gave away what he did not own.
