The final part of this imagined poetic exchange is not merely another round of responses, but rather a “purely theological and monotheistic solution” that dismantles all the excesses of previous centuries. Here, anonymous poets and the poet Hushang intervene to redirect the compass towards annihilation and complete surrender.
However, the true gem and the crowning achievement is a beautiful poem attributed to “Amin” (the blog’s author and the Persian-language publisher of this poetic exchange). After centuries of bidding wars between those who donated cities (Hafez), those who donated organs (Saeb), those who donated their souls (Shahryar), and those who donated their sultanate and paradise (Asef), Amin came to declare, in a dazzling literary language of utmost unity and beauty, that all these gifts are not bestowed upon the earthly, mortal beloved, but are returned with praise, gratitude, and servitude to the Supreme Creator (God), who granted us the soul and existence and bestowed upon us that beloved in the first place.
English Translation
An anonymous poet defends Hafez with another verse:
Neither Hafez’s words nor his pain are proof of generosity or stinginess
Have you not read the other verse he addressed to you, where he said:
Indeed, the beauty of the beloved is independent of our incomplete love
What need does a beautiful face have for water, color, a mole, and a line (new, thinning hair)?
Anonymous Poet
If only that Turk from Shiraz would grant me his favor and possess my heart,
I would lay my head, my hands, my body, and my feet as a sacrifice beneath his feet.
For I truly give what I possess, and make it a portion for my beloved,
Unlike Hafez, who gives away Samarkand and Bukhara, which are beyond his dominion.
Anonymous Poet
If only that Turk from Shiraz would grant me his favor for reaching him, and possess my heart,
my feet would reach the very sun and the heavens, in glory and pride.
For our souls, our very selves, and our hearts all belong to the Kingdom of the True King (God)
So who am I, a penniless one, to offer anything for that beautiful beauty mark?
If our master (Shahryar) were truly immersed in the beauty of the Beloved (God),
would he not have attributed the soul and limbs to himself, saying: “My soul and my being” (mentioning the self is incompatible with the Beloved)?
An unknown poet
Everyone who gives something gives it out of generosity and kindness
This one gives his soul, that one gives the soul of the soul, and another bestows his wealth.
Perhaps one of them owns nothing and therefore gives nothing at all
But one like me neither gives nor desires to give.
If only that Turk from Shiraz would be generous with his connection and possess my heart
For the sake of his Indian beauty mark, I wouldn’t wish to give him anything 😂
A poet named Hoshang
O you who claim immersed in love, offering Samarkand and Bukhara
And (claiming to love) with head, hand, and body, and with soul and meaning as well
For it is not a condition of love and passion to demand a price (the union of the heart), but give freely of your heart’s contentment without expectation of reward conditions and without “if,” “when,” or “but”
Secondly: All this generosity you bestow is but a spark of the light of the Beloved’s own face,
and we have not a single atom of it.
And for the sake of my sweet, beautiful Beloved, I find no gift worthy of him,
whether he possesses my heart or not, whether he has taken it by his hand or not.
(True love is unconditional, requiring no emotional reciprocation. The lover himself and all the generosity he possesses are but a reflection and manifestation of the beauty of the Absolute Beloved (God), so how can a servant boast of what is not his?
Poet (Amin), author of the blog (The Poetic Exchange We Have Seen)
Neither Samarkand nor Bukhara, nor the head, the hand, the body, nor the foot
Nor all the soul and its parts, nor all the soul and its meaning
Nor thousands of beautiful poems, nor the empire of the world
Nor Paradise and the highest throne, nor the bed of the soul of meaning
Nor the dust of Iran, nor faith, nor even the whole world
Nor thousands of beautiful loves, nor even the mighty kingdom of Solomon
Nor wealth, nor status, nor power and authority, nor might
Nor these nor those, nor even the whole sea
I will not give all this to the mortal beloved (the soul of the soul), but I give all this to the Great Creator (God)
Who has been generous to me, and give me that kind Turkish friend, and sent me that generous companion.
And though that beloved Turk, the dearest soul of my soul, has captured my heart,
then God has bestowed upon me—by mere of my very being—a soul, a body, and life.
And there is nothing worthy of being given to the One (God) who fashioned me in this form,
for the blessing of His, I will give Him my entire being, my existence, and my life.
(This last poem summarizes the journey, human love is elevated to pure mystical monotheism (witnessed monotheism), where the poet Amin enumerates all the historical gifts that previous poets boasted about and dismantles them one by one, declaring his abstention from the polytheistic love of surrendering these sacred things and existences to other than the Creator. For the Creator, Glory be to Him, is the Giver of the Beloved and the Giver of the Soul, and the true servant is annihilated from himself and from his material beloved, to return the complete surrender of “bod and hast” (existence, non-existence, and being) to the true Owner of the Kingdom, the Most High, the Exalted.
