This third part represents the pinnacle of dialogue and dramatic maturity in the debate; Where poets no longer content themselves with indirect commentary, but opened the door to dialogue and direct confrontation with Hafez Shirazi himself, invoking his voice to defend his grand existential philosophy. Regional identity and pride in place (through the Ahwazi cypress) are also prominent in this section, along with the captivating feminist responses that break the male monopoly on this battle and redirect the course of love.
English Translation
Hossein Fasihi Langroudi (a committed contemporary national poet) says:
If that Turk Shirazi were to bestow his favor and possess my heart,
I would not give, for the sake of his beauty mark (mole), a single span (an inch) of Iranian soil.
Give whatever you wish (of yourselves), from head to toe and the foot, but
Do not give up—out of submission and surrender—from the land of the martyrs
Natoli Derakhshan
If that Turk Shirazi were to bestow his favor and possess my heart,
what need would there be for giving up anything else, be it my head, my soul, or Bukhara?
A gift is given only to one who needs it,
not to the Turk Shirazi, who bestowed his love upon souls and spirits.
Imad Karami
If only that one (whose stature is like) the cypress of Ahwaz would grant me his favor and possess my heart,
I would give, for the sake of the arch of his brow, Chaharshir Square (the Square of the Four Lions) and Milli Street.
For generosity and munificence is that you should give from what belongs to your city and your land
Unlike Hafez, who gives away the city of Bukhara (which he has no right to) for the sake of the Turk Shirazi.
Khanum Yari
If that Turk Shirazi would be generous with his affection and possess my heart,
I would kiss his heart with all my being, until his heart kisses ours in love.
For I am not like Hafez, giving him Samarkand and Bukhara
Nor Like Saeb, would give my head, hand, body, and my foot.
And I am not like the master (Shahryar), who would give his soul and his very being
Nor will I be like (Yari/the poet herself), submitting to him in humiliation, for the sake of that dignity, I will not do that for him.
For Samarkand and Bukhara are owned by the Shah and Sultan (Timur Lenk, the capital of his kingdom)
So, from where, O Hafiz, did you come to bring these gifts to him (the Turk Shirazi) to give them away?
The head, the hand, and the body—the God of hearts does not ask for them
My beloved (the Turk) will not accept them from you, Sa’ib, all these worthless gifts, will be of no use to him.
And you, our master (Shahryar), when you rebuke and reprimand Sa’ib,
do you not know that the soul and the limbs are a gift from the Gracious Lord (and not yours to give away, like Sa’ib’s gifts)?
And you, “Khanum Yari/Poetess,” if you were truly consumed by the beauty of your beloved, you would have crushed from the depths of your soul that heart as hard as stone (*that broke the hearts of all poets and never looked back at them)
Amir Yusuf Mohebbi speaks in the voice of the poet Hafez
I am Hafez, whose poems have bewildered the future
And made me forget, in this world, all the worries and details of this life
And because I composed those verses for that Turk Shirazi
For you do not know, because of his memory which still captivates the minds and hearts of lovers
For I have never seen in this world a beloved to such a great extent
So much so that Sa’ib would give, instead of my reply (the gift of Bukhara and Samarkand for his sake), his hand, his body, and his feet
And I did not reply to Sa’ib in that era (Sa’ib came after Hafez),
for I did not want to see his sorrow pursue me (*maybe The reply will be harsh at that time)
And if I said before that I would give Samarkand and Bukhara for him (that Turk from Shiraz),
then I say again now: I would give the whole world to him.
And if you desire such a love, then confide your secrets to the Lord,
who gives to lovers all truth for the soul and meaning.
And my advice to you, who possess such a precious beloved,
you should ransom him at any price, if you desired glory in the highest heavens (the Pleiades star).
And I mention here (the poet Joseph himself, speaking through Hafez),
who spent his time with me, that he should raise his plea to the Lord, as Zuleikha requested.
(The wife of the Aziz said, “Now the truth has become clear. I tried to seduce him, and he is indeed truthful.”)
(*Perhaps he means here that Hafez was not wrong in what he said, but rather that the poets in these verses spoke falsely about him.)
Mehrangiz Rasapur
(A truly magnificent and contemporary poem expressing the pinnacle of Kurdish, Lurish, and feminine national pride)
The beloved Hafez generously bestowed Samarkand and Bukhara
To such an extent that no one has been able to reclaim them to this day
And from that time, following this extravagance from Hafez’s own pocket (giving away what he did not own),
look what happened among the poets in this uproar, shouting and quarreling
For his being is a nest of riddles, legends, and magic
See how this act of generosity on his part became a riddle within a riddle.
Come, O keeper of secrets (Hafez), far from this clamor and commotion,
Let us gather together in solitude these yearning, passionate hearts.
Forget that Turk Shirazi, and come to see the beautiful Lur maidens,
who would (you) give up this world and the next for a single lock of their hair.
Look at those eyes and brows, that stature and those braids,
and contemplate those the beloved, enchanting one (who steals hearts), who knows all the secrets of the deep sea (a hidden pearl)
I heard Khawaja (Sayyid/Master) Shiraz (Hafez) say in his council
that the poetess “M. Pagah” is the one who will restore Samarkand and Bukhara to us
(*Perhaps she meant that Hafez would retract his offer of Bukhara and Samarkand after hearing the beautiful tales about the girls of Lorestan)
And based on this sweet statement made by Hafez, know that
it no one will leave us alone, so easily, anymore.
