2-A Hypothetical Poetic debate about one of Hafez Shirazi’s verses

Part Two

The second part of the debate represents the more mature, logical, mystical, and satirical critique of this ongoing literary battle. After the first poets generously offered up cities, organs, and even their own lives, This new group intervened to dismantle the exaggeration and to clarify matters with profound wisdom, they described the debate as a “chaotic marketplace” (Ashfateh Bazaar) that manipulates mystical truths and material values.

English Translation

Sayyid Hassan Haj Sayyid Javadi responds to Dr. Anousheh

If the Prince of Archers (whose eyelashes are like arrows) would bestow his favor and possess my heart,
I would dedicate thousands of beautiful poems to the bow of his curved brow.

For I see all soul and meaning in the hands of the Beloved (He is its source)
So why should I give Him something that He, in His essence, is the One who should bestow it upon us?

O Hatim al-Ta’i, do you give from the pocket of the unseen?
The value of the soul and meaning (in your view, in this cheap offering) is not even equal to the value of a baby monkey.

A poet, male or female, responding to (Hafez, Rand Tabrizi, and Saeb Tabrizi), unknown.

What a strange, chaotic market (this pointless poetic exchange) for clever buyers!
They all display the beauties of Tabriz, and the beautiful, slender bodies of the idols.

Look at Saeb’s generosity! The extravagant one, do not stand idly by lest you regret it (buy from them/the beautiful Turkish of Tabriz)
For no buyer will ever find such generosity and lavishness, since he sold his limbs for a paltry price.

Does he give away the crystal head and hand (so beautiful), and the slender, silvery body?
This does not benefit the beloved in any way, so why not give away the hand and foot as well?

And see how things turned out in the end, and how abundant were his gifts!
He not only gave all his physical body, but also, like a man, he gave his very soul.

What more could you want? For loss will surely befall you.
Come, O Turk Shirazi, and take with you this dead merchandise (the mortal body after the soul was given away, the body remains a lifeless corpse).

Come, O beloved of Shiraz, and look at Rand Tabrizi, how she speaks in her drunken stupor
I do not know what she is saying; perhaps this girl has lost her mind?

Blame and reproach rained down on the buyers like stones from the sky
Why all this talk and haggling between supply and demand?

They make the heart equal to the universe, nay, they make it higher and more sublime
And for the love of the Turk Shirazi, he gave all those gifts (everything, body and soul).

And in the end, what does he have to boast of? He goes to the city of Khawaja (Hafiz),
and he, in turn, generously bestows Samarkand and Bukhara.

And far removed from gossip and this clamor, even if I have no influence, I rise above you all, and I have prayed for you one after another, so read: “Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you your past and future sins.”

Dr. Asif responds to (Hafiz, Dr. Anousheh, and Grossi)

If only that the handsome one (like the moon) from the city of Khawaf, generously bestows his affection and possesses my heart
I would make the entire world a rose and scatter it at his feet in reverence.

For if Hafez (for the Turk Shirazi) gifted him Samarkand and Bukhara,
Or if that Kurdish poet, gave his body, soul, head, and feet all for his sake,

Then, in the end, they speak of prices for this unique pearl,
and even if Anushah had proudly bestowed both soul and meaning (for he, the handsome one, is more precious than spirit and meaning)

But Asif says that he will grant him dominion over the entire universe,
and bestow upon him body, meaning, paradise, and the highest throne altogether.
