This (imaginary/fabricated) poetic exchange serves as a “virtual and ongoing literary laboratory across the ages”; It did not stop at the boundaries of the 8th century AH (the era of Hafez Shirazi), but rather intertwined voices from different eras. The secret to its beauty lies in its portrayal of a conflict between different human visions of life and existence.
It begins with the mystical sublimity and symbolic, dreamy sacrifice of the poet Hafez, then moves to the rational, material realism of Saeb Tabrizi, and then ascends to pure spiritual and emotional detachment in Shahriar.
Afterward, the opinions shift to:
1-National commitment and patriotic dignity in Amir Nizam
2-Descending to earth and tangible material and social reality in Dr. Anousheh and the satirical poet Abbadzadeh
3-Transforming into an intelligent, questioning pause that redefines the relationship between lover and beloved in Rand Tabrizi
4-Ending with the religious and doctrinal rigor that rejects the poets’ excessive veneration of human beauty in Mohammad Fazl Ali
English Translation
The verse by Hafez Shirazi:
If only that beloved (Turk Shirazi) bestows his favor and possesses my heart,
I will give, for the sake of his Indian’s mole, the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara together (the two cities were the capital of Timur Lenk).
The poet Sa’ib Tabrizi responds to this verse, saying:
Everyone who gives anything gives from what he possesses of his soul and spirit
Unlike Hafez, who gives away Samarkand and Bukhara, for he gives away what he does not own.
If only that beloved (Turk Shirazi) bestows his favor and possesses my heart
I would give, for the sake of his Indian’s mole, my head, my hand, my body, and my foot altogether.
Shahriyar responds to Hafez and Saeb Tabrizi
He who gives, gives with the generosity and nobility of free men
Not like Saeb, who gives his head, hand, body, and foot
For the head, hand, body, and foot are destined for decay and the dust of the grave
Not for that beloved Shirazian, who captivated hearts of the worlds
If only that beloved (Turk Shirazi) bestows his favor and possesses my heart
I would give my entire soul and being for the sake of his Indian’s mole.
Amir Nizam Garousi responds to Hafez
If that beloved Kurdish Garousi would grant me his favor and possess my heart
I would give him my body, my soul, my head, and my feet.
For chivalry and nobility lie in giving from what your hand possesses, and from your own,
Unlike Hafez, who generously bestows Samarkand and Bukhara, which are outside his dominion.
Dr. Anousheh responds to Amir Nezam Garousi:
If that beloved Tehrani would bestows his favor and possesses my heart
I would give my soul and my entire being for the sight of his sweet smile.
For the head, the hand, the body, and the foot are surrendered to the dust of the grave,
not to that beloved (like the face of the moon), who filled the world with allure from his passion.
Rand Al-Tabrizi responds to (Hafez, Saeb, and Shahryar)
If only that beloved (Turk Shirazi) bestows his favor and possesses my heart,
then he must give me the whole world as the price for that heart (my heart).
Have I lost my mind in this stagnant market (the chaos of poetic bidding and materialistic floundering)
that I should give him my heart in exchange for Bukhara?
I will not give my limbs like Sa’ib (head, hand, body, and foot)
Nor am I like that Shahryar, who gives his soul and body parts
For this heart in our chest is inhabited by God, and it is more precious
than a thousand like the Turk of Shiraz and a thousand beautiful loves
But, if the Turk Shirazi were to give us his heart first
Then, perhaps, we would give him Bukhara as a favor
Muhammad Fadl Ali responds to Hafez
If only that beloved (Turk Shirazi) bestows his favor and possesses my heart,
it would be too much, and even too much, for me to give him worldly possessions.
Only the head, the hand, the heart, and the foot are given in the cause of religion
Not for the dust of a grave, nor for the worship of a human being, these things offered.
The same poet (conservative in religious orientation) responds to Dr. Anousheh and Shahriar
Have you become an atheist, O poet
To the point of bestowing soul and meaning?
For the beauty of a human being cannot equal the value of soul and meaning
Are you the leader of the age (Imam of Time/Zaman) and time to speak such cheap nonsense?
To bestow soul and meaning upon a beautiful face with hazel eyes?
If these things could be redeemed, I would have given them to the dust beneath the feet of the infallible one
For it is not fitting to offer the head, the hand, and with them
the soul and essence, to anyone other than him.
Does a beautiful face have any true value, that one would give anything for it?
If the soul were of such a cheap value, the glory of the highest throne would have fallen.
And for the sake of a beautiful face from Tehran, you bestow upon it the meaning of existence (the soul)?
You do not understand this enigma and you babble on with empty nonsense.
