In this ghazal, Sheikh Saadi raises the banner of “absolute detachment” and “blameworthiness,” demolishing the idol of superficial piety and hidden hypocrisy, exposing the base desires of the lower self, and affirming annihilation as a condition for attaining true unity and union with the Beloved.
English Translation
We have relinquished from our calculations all hope of reward from our limited obedience, and we have completely turned our gaze away from seeking recompense and reward. And we cast the shadow of the Simurgh for our lofty aspirations above the ruins of our annihilation and nothingness.
Whether the Beloved delivers us to the horrors of the flood and the tempest of death, or His grace guides us to the shores of safety, we have cast our hearts into the depths of the sea, refraining from resistance and planning, surrendering (we have submitted to God’s will willingly).
So if the enforcer (the one who forbids evil and enjoins good) rebukes to deter the wicked from their major sins; So tell him: Come to us joyfully, for we have torn away the cloak of dissimulation and removed the veil of concealment and hypocrisy, to reveal the truth of our love before all who behold it.
For we have driven the knower to wander in the sanctuary of his ecstasy, and we have made the Sufi immersed in listening to the longings. And we stirred the beautiful witness (the witnessed beauty that testifies to the beauty of the Creator), so that it might dance with joy in our solitude. Then we poured the opium of bewilderment and complete oblivion into the drink of the cup of our love, so that minds might perish (complete sensory awareness might be extinguished, leaving only the Beloved).
There is no human being in this existence who is not tainted (the hems of his garment are stained) by the traces of sins and shortcomings. However, people strive to conceal their sins hypocritically, while we have displayed our flaws and wounds under the bright sunlight for purification and modesty (we have completely distanced ourselves from hypocrisy).
Oh, O Saadi, those who feign piety and devotion secretly worship themselves and the idols of their own souls; but we have hung the drum of our disgrace around our necks (publicly blaming and tarnishing our hollow reputation), and we have pushed ourselves to fall into the mire of wretchedness and humiliation as a breaking of pride.
For the servant of God must possess the strength and might of the hero Rustam, in order to confront and challenge the evil-commanding demon within himself. If victory and triumph over it are granted to us, it will be as if we have cast down Afrasiab (the historical enemy of the soul) prostrate beneath our feet.
Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia
The Simurgh: The ancient mythical bird in mystical mythology, representing the manifestation of the divine self or the highest level of spiritual aspiration (as in Attar’s The Conference of the Birds). The seeker’s aspiration here is celestial, not content with the limitations of the transient material world, but soaring to the horizons of the divine realm.
Casting shields upon water (spr bar ab affkandan): A powerful educational metaphor signifying complete submission to the flow of the Beloved’s will (acceptance and decree). The true lover casts aside the illusions of self-preservation and utilitarian calculations.
Malamatiyya and Spiritual Nudity (Niqab Afkandan): Sheikh Saadi strongly criticizes “hypocritical commercial asceticism,” and Malamati lovers deliberately relinquish their social and moral standing (Nam-unang) so that their worship may be purified from the impurities of vanity and self-righteousness.
The Witness: The beautiful, witnessed one upon whose face the graces of divine beauty are reflected. The gnostic sees the Creator hidden behind the creation, and discerns meaning through the image.
The wetness of the hem (daman tar): a metaphor for falling into error and human fallibility. Sheikh Saadi believes that truthfully acknowledging one’s limitations in the light of day is more honorable and pure than feigning a false purity in which the observer believes himself to be perfect.
Self-worship and the drum-waving: “Khodparastī” (selfishness) is the antithesis of monotheism, and the drum-waving and the donkey-waving are (al-khalab) symbols of this. An embodiment of the suppression of inner pride, and the humble descent to the purifying state of brokenness.
Rostam and Afrasiab: An epic allegory from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. The greater jihad against the commanding self (the ego) is not undertaken by the weak, but rather requires spiritual fortitude and willpower comparable to that of the legendary hero Rustam, who conquered the realms of evil.
This Sermon means:
The attainment of true closeness and union is contingent upon sincerity of heart and the destruction of the idol of selfishness and outward hypocrisy in favor of immersing oneself in complete surrender and submission to the Beloved. It is significant in the path of mystical conduct and the purification of souls because it establishes the station of the “greater jihad” against the demon of the commanding self and demolishes all avenues of boasting and empty reputation, affirming that the lesson is… Through inner humility and utter deprivation, not through the adornment of outward appearances with empty rituals of obedience devoid of spirit.
