True salvation lies in purifying one’s inner self from the falsehood of hypocrisy

In this ghazal, Sheikh Saadi blends the poignant sermon of majesty with the tender hope of beauty, describing the inevitability of human mortality and the necessity of purifying the inner self from the falsehood of hypocrisy in order to cross the bridge of resurrection (the Day of Judgment) safely.

English Translation

The fragrant breeze of dawn, redolent with the scent of roses, blows sweetly. So rise, my companion, let us seize this moment. How many breezes will blow over the dust of our remains after we depart from this world?

O you who did not follow the clear path of righteousness in this fleeting life, know for certain that you will find yourself tomorrow on the bridge of the Hereafter, standing in a state of terror, turmoil, and great fear.

For counterfeit gold, coated with deceptive paint (hypocrisy in worship), will not be accepted in the marketplace of the Gathering and Reckoning (the Day of Judgment). Therefore, a servant must possess a pure and sincere essence to emerge from the furnace of trial and tribulation unscathed and sound.

For you have concealed your flaw from the eyes of strangers, while the All-Seeing (God) observes and sees it. Your evil deeds are hidden from those close to you, while the All-Knowing/God, the Knower of secrets, is always aware of them and encompasses them.

Indeed, indulging the soul (the one that incites to evil) and pursuing its desires is obviously contrary to the opinion of the wise and prudent person. The naive child craves the date for its immediate pleasure (satisfying the soul’s desires), without considering the consequences, while the wise person adheres to patience, seeking the paths of safety.

And when I (Saadi) was about to tread the path of despair and hopelessness, ashamed of my many sins, divine mercy descended, reviving my heart with its call: “O sinners and wrongdoers, do not despair of God’s mercy, for the door of forgiveness and acceptance remains open.” With the Generous One (God)

O my God, if You punish us (burn our bodies) with the fires of justice, it is purely our due, the recompense for what our hands have committed. And if You encompass us with forgiveness, then Your mercy is universal for all creation, and Your benevolence is eternal and everlasting, never ceasing.

And although the accursed Satan has led me astray from the path of truth and fairness, I still cling to the hems of hope and the forgiveness of the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful (God).

For He who bestowed life, created the soul, guaranteed sustenance, and showered down His immense favors (God), will surely forgive and overlook my shortcomings with His grace, when my bones have turned to dust in the grave.

So, O Saadi!, excessive talk and embellished words are a waste of the precious years of your life. Now is the time for humility, offering apologies, and repenting. So say: I seek forgiveness from God, the Almighty.

Mystical Sufi Meanings

The Child’s Desire and the Sage’s Wisdom (The Child of Khurma…): Sheikh Saadi portrays the lower self as a child who cries for immediate gratification (a date/worldly desires) without awareness of the harm. The “sage,” on the other hand, is the soul connected to the Truth, which knows how to restrain this desire through patience and spiritual discipline, thus preserving the inner self.

The Counterfeit Gold (The Heart of Zar Andouda): A powerful educational metaphor used by the Sheikh Saadi, as he said: “Fake gold, plated with pure gold, appears dazzling to those who judge by appearances, but the true goldsmith (the Truth) places it in the fire (the ordeal of the Resurrection) to expose its falsehood. The lesson lies in conduct based on sincerity and essence, not in feigning piety.”

Eternity and decay (an ancient grace… decay): Sheikh Saadi’s mystical doctrine rests on the supremacy of “grace” over “justice.” God, who created the servant from nothing and sustained him in life, will not leave his remains after death prey to torment. Because His benevolence is eternal, preceding time and sin itself.

The futility of words and the etiquette of seeking forgiveness (Adhar Awardan): Ultimately, Sheikh Saadi believes that excessive explanations and verbal claims are nothing but a waste of life, and true salvation begins where words end and humility begins with seeking repentance and forgiveness.

This sermon means:

The truth of salvation lies in purifying the inner self from the falsehood of hypocrisy and liberating oneself from the shackles of childish desires, while maintaining humility and hope in the eternal forgiveness of the Creator. It is important in the path of spiritual conduct and development because it balances between the fear of justice and the hope of divine grace, affirming that no matter how much a servant transgresses against himself with sins, the protection of the Generous One remains his only refuge at the Day of Judgment.
