In this shockingly emotional ghazal, Sheikh Saadi wields the “scalpel of the Malamati surgeon” to tear open the garment of his personal pretense, describing himself in the harshest terms, demolishing the idol of reputation and prestige (nam wanang) to lead us to the truth of “absolute detachment,” where confession of sin and complete humility are the sole conditions for attaining divine favor and acceptance.
English Translation
In the quiet corners of worship, I, that hypocrite, am full of pretensions, who wear the garb of asceticism, who displays wheat and sells barley (outwardly displaying asceticism while inwardly harboring desire and hypocrisy), and who is completely devoid of essence and spiritual meaning.
For I am a worshiper of idols and material images (the outward appearance, not the essence) in a house of deceit, trickery, and cunning, who erected for himself hidden idols like Manat, Suwa’, Al-Lat, and Al-‘Uzza in the depths of his heart, while claiming to worship the One, the Almighty.
And I boast of claiming manhood and spiritual valor, shamelessly and brazenly, but in truth, I have corrupted myself and made myself weak (wicked and depraved) like a lyre player, selling her honor (inner vulgarity and submission to worldly desires).
And beneath this patched, worn-out garment (ancient, very much so), I am the Pharaoh of his time, in my hidden arrogance and pride, yet I boldly claim to be Moses, the one who spoke with God, standing atop Mount Sinai in sorrow (emotional sorrow) for his Beloved (God).
So I entered the abode of annihilation (the tavern) and saw its inhabitants, truly residing there. But I found that the true idolater, the sole exception among those consumed by love for the Beloved (the pure intoxicated ones), is myself.
So, O Saadi, purify yourself, as I (Saadi talking to himself) have, from the intoxication of hypocrisy and sensual pretense; and be broken without pretense, as I am, whom ecstasy and holy wine have made him acceptable and beloved in the presence of the Most High Lord, due to the sincerity of his acknowledgment of his helplessness before Him.
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
The barley seller (Jovroche): A familiar mystical metaphor in the critique of hypocrisy; It describes the one who presents people with pure wheat (outward righteousness) but sells them under the table cheap barley (greed and worship of the world), and destroying this trait is the beginning of sincerity.
The idols of the pre-Islamic (Manat, Suwa’, Lat, Al-Uzza): Sheikh Saadi invokes the names of the idols mentioned in the Holy Quran to show that “hidden polytheism” sometimes resides in the monasteries; Every attachment to anything other than God (status, reputation, the admiration of people) is an idol secretly worshiped by the seeker.
The inner duality of “Pharaoh and Moses”: Sufis assert that every person carries within themselves both “Pharaoh” (which is conceit and arrogance) and “Moses” (which is the heart yearning for union with God). Wearing the dervish’s robe (the cloak) while retaining inner pride is a contradiction and a false claim to the station of Moses.
The exceptional nature of the tavern (Mikeh): Sheikh Saadi criticizes those looking for (appearances only) in the hermitage; Sinners and drunkards in taverns are purer in their hearts because of their brokenness, while the worshiper who is pleased with his worship, due to his pride, becomes a hidden idolater.
Purification from intoxication (from the sediment at the bottom of the cup): “Sediment” is the dregs that settle at the bottom of the cup, and purification from it means completely cleansing the inner self of the dust of self-importance and standing before the Truth in utter humility.
This sermon means:
That inner hypocrisy and outward pretense of righteousness are the true idols. It veils the seeker from the lights of manifestation, and divine acceptance is not attained through adorning forms and outward appearances, but rather through sincere humility and acknowledging one’s emptiness and inherent poverty. It is important in purifying souls and guiding the path of truth because it demolishes the arrogance of obedience and shows the seeker that the soundness of the heart begins with shattering the idols of reputation and status in order to reach the saving annihilation.
