Spiritual elevation, liberation, and purification of the inner self from worldly distractions

In this ghazal, Sheikh Saadi plays on the theme of “complete detachment” and spiritual rebellion against worldly demands and distractions, presenting a prose structure that blends expressions of annihilation with the resolve of the path.

English Translation

I have resolved and decided to embrace silence and contentment, to withdraw from worldly distractions (I have tucked the foot of patience beneath the hem of my cloak), and to draw around my soul, prone to evil, a circle of prohibition and restraint, like one who encircles a venomous snake, preventing it from moving and causing harm.

After living for a long time like a rose with two faces with my circumstances that ever-changing, and like the narcissus, bold in its gaze. Now is the time for me to restrain my tongue and withdraw it within my mouth (silence and contemplation only), like the iris with its ten (silent) tongues.

And after I have prepared myself and girded myself (tightened my belt) diligently in the pursuit of worldly material possessions, and pursued them like the (black) ant, eager to gather its sustenance, I have now resolved to be like the termite (white ant), purifying my senses through arduous exercise, turning my face towards the rock, to demolish it (The Hard Habits of Clay/Phenomenal Matter).

For how long will my pure soul remain imprisoned and isolated in the corners of this mortal dust (the physical body)? And how can I—I who, in my essence and radiance, belong to the purity of the houris—bear any longer the burdens of the demonic soul’s chains?

As long as the anemone remains hidden and safe in its protected bud, why should I accept the company of thorns at my side? As long as the Beloved (God) dwells in the house of my heart, how long will I continue to drink from the bitter cup of companionship with strangers and enemies?

Oh, what a pity! If I were granted a moment of solitude and beautiful reproach with my Beloved (God), I would willingly and gladly accept to bear the punishment and consequences of the failings of all other lovers and companions.

So, O Saadi, you may have glory and a lofty stature before the gatherings of eloquent and articulate masters, but know that this head will not be granted immortality, for what this arrogance and pride towards others, when the grave is the ultimate destination?

Mystical and Gnostic Meanings

The Circle of Prohibition and the Serpent’s Reach: In Persian mystical tradition, the soul is likened to a serpent (mar) which, if left unchecked, will bite its owner. The “line of prohibition” is the legal framework that surrounds it, rendering it incapable of action and harm.

The Tongue of the Iris and the Silence of Certainty: In Persian literature, the iris is used as a metaphor for silence filled with knowledge. It has ten petals resembling tongues (deh zaban), but they are silent and do not speak. This represents the “silence of the knowers” who are preoccupied with witnessing the Truth, rather than excessive talk.

The ant’s gnawing and the ironwork (Murianeh and Ahan): Sheikh Saadi criticizes the greedy material pursuit of worldly things (the ant bringing grain), and the alternative is to transform into “Murianeh” (the termite) that gnaws through hard iron. This is a metaphor for the intensity of spiritual discipline and silent struggle that dispels the harshness of the earthly structure.

The alienation of the celestial soul (Hour-Ayn and the band of Ahriman): In Sheikh Saadi’s doctrine, the soul is a heavenly, sacred breath (Hour-Ayn), while the body and instincts are the prison of clay, shackled by the chains of “Ahriman” (the symbol of evil and inner darkness). Liberation is the soul’s striving to return to its original abode.

The seclusion of the inner self and the silence of the garden (Dost dar khane ast): Sheikh Saadi refers to existential unity; The Beloved is not in distant lands, but dwells in the “House of the Heart.” Being preoccupied with creation and other things (like a pound on the enemy’s back) is a deficiency in the etiquette of union and a neglect of the near neighbor.

The Disappearance of Boasting of the Earth (like a pound on the back): Sheikh Saadi weighs the literary and material glory (which he enjoyed among the eloquent of his time) on the scale of annihilation and death. Every head raised in pride is, in reality, a repository of dust, and lowering the head in humility before the Truth is the only path to eternity.

This Sermon means:

Spiritual elevation and liberation from the shackles of materialism are contingent upon patience, purifying the inner solitude of worldly distractions, and realizing the inevitability of annihilation. It is important in the path of mystical conduct because it shows that the silence of the mystic is an act of glorification of the Beloved’s majesty, and that self-respect Worldly glory is but fleeting vanity, insignificant compared to the majesty of the grave and standing before the All-Generous, the All-Loving.
