The Book of Gulistan is completed, and God is the One from whom help is sought, by the grace of the Almighty, may His name be glorified. As is the custom of authors, I have not borrowed the poetry of the ancients in this book.
For mending your own old garment is better
than borrowing the clothes of others.
Most of Saadi’s words bring joy and delight, and this may be criticized by the short-sighted, who say: “Wasting the mind and burning the lamp’s oil on what is useless is not the way of the wise.”
But it is not hidden from enlightened hearts (those with discerning hearts) – to whom these words are addressed – that I have woven pearls of healing admonitions into the thread of eloquent expression, and blended the bitterness of advice with the sweetness of wit. So that their weary souls may not be deprived of accepting this blessing, and praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
We have offered our counsel where it is due,
and spent a lifetime in doing so.
If the words do not fall upon a receptive ear,
then the Messenger’s duty is only to deliver the clear message.
O reader, ask God for mercy
upon the author, and seek forgiveness for its author (Sa’di).
And ask for yourself some good that you desire,
and after that, forgiveness for its writer.

خاتمة كتاب گُلستان
تَمَّ كتابُ الگُلستان، واللهُ المُستعان، بتوفيقِ الباري عزَّ اسمه، وكما جَرت عادةُ المُؤلفين، لم أستعر في هذا الكتابِ أشعارَ الأقدمين
فترقيعُ ثوبِكَ القَديم خَيرٌ
من إستعارةِ ثيابِ الآخرين
غالبُ كلامِ سعدي يَبعثُ على السرورِ والبَهجة، وقد يَعيبُ ذلك قَصيرو النظرِ قائلين: إنَّ إضناءَ العقلِ وإحراقَ زَيتِ المِصباحِ فيما لا طائلَ مِنه ليس من شِيَمِ الحُكماء
ولكن لا يخفى على القلوبِ المُنيرة (أصحاب القلوب) -الذين وُجِّهَ إليهم هذا الكلام- أنني نَسجتُ دُررَ المواعظِ الشافيةِ في سِلكِ العبارةِ البليغة، ومَزجتُ مُرَّ النصيحةِ بشهدِ الظرافة؛ لكي لا تُحرَمَ نفوسُهم المَلولة من قبولِ هذهِ النعمةِ، والحمدُ للهِ ربِّ العالَمين
لقد بَذلنا النُّصحَ في موضعه
وأمضينا في ذلكَ عُمراً من الزمانِ
فإن لم يَقع الكلامُ في أذنٍ راغبةٍ
فما على الرسولِ إلا البلاغ المبين
یا ناظراً فیه سَل باللهِ مَرحمةً
علی المَصنفِ و أستَغفِر لصاحِبِهِ (سعدي)
و اَطلُب لِنَفسِكَ مِن خیرٍ تُریدُ بها
مِن بعدِ ذلِكَ غُفراناً لکاتبهِ

تمام شد کتاب گلستان والله المستعان به توفیق باری عزّ اسمه، در این جمله چنان که رسم مؤلفان است، از شعر متقدمان به طریق استعارت تلفیقی نرفت
کهن خرقهٔ خویش پیراستن
به از جامهٔ عاریت خواستن
غالب گفتار سعدی طرب انگیز است و طیبت آمیز و کوته نظران را بدین علت زبان طعن دراز گردد که مغز دماغ بیهوده بردن و دود چراغ بی فایده خوردن کار خردمندان نیست، ولیکن بر رای روشن صاحبدلان که روی سخن در ایشان است پوشیده نماند که درّ موعظههای شافی را در سلک عبارت کشیده است و داروی تلخ نصیحت به شهد ظرافت بر آمیخته تا طبع ملول ایشان از دولت قبول محروم نماند الحمدلله ربّ العالمین

روزگاری در این به سر بردیم
گر نیاید به گوش رغبت کس
بر رسولان پیام باشد و بس
یا ناظراً فیه سَل باللهِ مرحمةً
