A man without chivalry is like a cruel, merciless woman, and a greedy worshiper is like a highwayman
O you who whitened your garments seeking prestige and status (you wore white to appear learned and virtuous)
While the record of your deeds is black
If you desire true asceticism, then forsake this world (and worship the Hereafter)
Whether the sleeve of your garment is long or short (Meaning, the essence lies in true asceticism, not in the length of one’s clothes)
Arabic Translation
الرجلُ بلا مروءةٍ يشبه أمرأة قاسية بلا رحمة، والعَابدُ الطمَّاعُ كقاطعِ الطريقِ
يا مَن بيَّضتَ ثيابَكَ طَلباً للجاهِ والناموس (لبست الأبيض كي تكون عالماً فاضلاً)
بينما صَحيفةُ أعمالِكَ سَوداء
إذا أردت الزُهد الحقيقي، فأترك الدنيا (وتَعبد للأخرة)
سَواءً أكانَ كُمُّ ثوبِكَ طويلاً أم قصيراً
(أي أنَّ العِبرةَ بالزهدِ الحقيقي لا بطولِ الثياب)

مردِ بیمروت زن است و عابدِ با طمع رهزن
ای به ناموس کرده جامه سپید
بهر پندار خلق و نامه سیاه
دست کوتاه باید از دنیا
آستین خوه دراز و خوه کوتاه
