Covert reconciliation with the Devil

It is said that a man made it permissible (he made it easy, he made taking people’s money unjustly permissible, not forbidden) to seize people’s wealth through trickery and deceit. When he had finished his crime (seized people’s money), he unleashed his fury and curses upon Iblis (the accursed Satan), claiming that he was the one who tempted him to commit the sin.

At that very moment, the accursed Iblis was standing in the path of this wicked man and replied, “Indeed, your affair is strange indeed! I have never seen anyone more foolish than you in my life.

O you! You yourself are in complete agreement and conformity with my way (my evil method in this world), so why do you raise your head today, pretending and claiming to be fighting and opposing me?”

(Saadi advises the reader)

How unfortunate it is to submit to the ugly commands of Satan, allowing the pens of the pure and divinely appointed angels to record your sins (when you follow Satan’s whims and path) in your book of deeds.

Are you content—out of ignorance, lack of moral conscience, and fear of God Almighty—to have your evil deeds and the defilement of your heart recorded by the pure and holy angels (those commanded to write down all your actions)?

If not, then it is better to seek salvation from wrongdoing and strive for reconciliation with God Almighty, rather than with Satan himself. When you seek repentance, present before the Creator an intercessor (a helper) to support you: your genuine good deeds in this world, so that they may intercede for you before the Creator, may He be pleased with you and forgive you. Speak words of sincere apology to the Creator, may He be exalted.

For time and destiny will not grant you safety from death, not even for a moment, when the cup of life is full (your life is nearing its end) and the appointed time for your departure from this world is announced.

And if you are unable to rectify what has been corrupted by your own strength, then raise your hands in supplication and entreaty to God Almighty, like the needy, and those brokenhearted at the door of the Generous One alone

Even if your sins have exceeded all bounds, your confession before God that your path was one of misguidance is the first step towards righteousness.

And seize the opportunity with all your might when you see the door of reconciliation with God and repentance from sins/reform open; for beware of procrastination/delay, for perhaps the door of repentance will suddenly close with the end of your life.

My son, do not depart (die) burdened with the sins of this world; The porter who groans under the weight of heavy burdens will inevitably be unable to continue the journey (the reckoning) in the Hereafter.

Therefore, you must hasten your steps to follow in the footsteps of the righteous; for whoever sincerely seeks this happiness (repentance) will attain their goal.

But as long as you chase after your vile devil, I do not know how you can keep pace with the caravan of the righteous.

Indeed, the intercession of the Chosen Prophet is only attained by those whose path is straightened according to the straight path of his tolerant Sharia (true Islam).

So adhere to the straight path to reach the right way. You are not on that path now, and therefore you are lagging behind those who have gone before you.

In your current state, you are like the blindfolded ox of the mill; He runs tirelessly all day, only to find himself back where he started when evening comes.

(A story by Saadi, about the purity of the mosque and the purity of Paradise)

It is said that a man whose clothes were stained with mud (a metaphor for a sinner, not someone drowning in sin up to his neck, but rather someone whose clothes were merely soiled) went to the mosque. He was in a pitiful state, lamenting his misfortune (as if cursing Satan, as in the beginning of the story) who had plunged him into the mud (sin).

Someone rebuked him, shouting: “May your hands perish!; How can you enter the sanctuary of the mosque, stained with mud, with your garment clinging to it? (How can you enter the pure mosque while you are a sinner?)

(Saadi says about this situation)

I was overcome with tenderness and awe at this sight. I remembered that the highest Paradise is a pure abode where those who deserve it revel in bliss.

In that abode, which only the pure and radiant dwell, those who yearn for God’s pleasure, what other place can one seek refuge (and ask for forgiveness and pardon) whose soul is stained with the mire of sin?

Only those who have made obedience their provision in this world will attain that high station and exaltation in those gardens. Whoever desires to gain God’s favor on the Day of Judgment must bring with them the merchandise of righteous deeds.

So cease your heedlessness now! Abandon the errors and mistakes in your life (or, as Saadi put it, wash away the dust of error from your life), before the flow of divine guidance ceases and the source of life’s breath suddenly dries up (death and the inevitable fate).

Do not make excuses, saying, “The bird of happiness has slipped from my grasp” (I had no luck in this world); for you still manage your own affairs in this world (you have the power to choose between the path of righteousness and the path of evil) as long as there is life left in you.

And if you have been slow in your progress, then now advance with determination and strength. For the sincere repentant, the delay in reaching God does not harm him, if his intention to turn to Him (true repentance to God) is sincere.

And as long as death has not yet bound your hands, raise them in supplication to the threshold of the Creator, the Judge, the Exalted, the One.

Awaken! O sinner, lost in the bewitching slumber of heedlessness, and shed tears of remorse and apology to God the Most High for the sins and evils you have committed.

And since necessity dictates the loss of dignity (shame) one day, let your loss of dignity be now upon the dust of this path, in humility before God alone.

And if you have lost your dignity (shame), through sins in the world, has dried up, and you have no refuge left. So seek intercession from those of high standing and influence with God, those who are more modest and honorable than you.

(Saadi’s advice)

For if the Almighty, in His justice and power, were to turn me away from His door, I would seek refuge in the souls of the great mystics to intercede for me and invoke His mercy.

Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia

The Devil’s Deception (The Hidden Reconciliation): The devil mocks the person who curses him verbally but obeys him in deed. In gnosis, the “true devil” is the soul that reconciles with its desires and declares a fictitious war on the devil to numb the conscience.

The Bull of the Press (Gaw Asar): A striking metaphor for the heedless person; The bull circles around itself all day, blindfolded, thinking it has covered great distances, but in reality, it is “waps” (backward) and hasn’t moved an inch. This is the state of those who toil in this world without turning to God Almighty.

Mud and the Mosque (Purifying the Garment): The mosque represents the “presence of holiness,” and mud represents “sin.” Just as one who is soiled with mud is prevented from physically entering the mosque, one who is stained with sins is prevented from entering the “paradise of meaning” in the Hereafter.

The Reality of the Merchandise of Paradise (Cash and Goods): Paradise is not free; its price is “obedience.” Saadi reminds us that “bankruptcy” in the Hereafter is a natural consequence of not preparing the merchandise in this world.

Water of Dignity (Abru): In Persian culture, “Abru” is the most precious thing a person possesses, and shedding this water signifies complete humility. The seeker on the Sufi path sheds tears to preserve his “water of dignity” tomorrow before God.

Intercession (Intercessor): Saadi emphasizes the station of “intercession”—if a servant is unable to obtain forgiveness on his own due to the multitude of his sins, he must supplicate through the “spirits of the great” (the spirits of the exalted), such as the prophets and saints, because their high standing with God compensates for the repentant’s shortcomings.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that claiming righteousness with one’s tongue while following one’s desires in action is the height of folly, and that salvation is contingent upon purifying the servant’s soul from the mire of sin before the journey to the Hereafter. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker on the Sufi path to the “jurisprudence of necessity” and the necessity of seeking intercession from the righteous when tears run dry, confirming that whoever is not on the path of the righteous will not attain forgiveness. The path of Sharia is like a “crushed ox” running aimlessly in the wilderness of heedlessness without reaching its destination, and the door of repentance remains open to those who understand the value of the “last breath” before death.
