Saadi talks about his childhood, and how he became attached to his father

My memory, Saadi, conjures up a scene from my early youth; when I went out one Eid morning with my father.

The games and joyful festivities distracted me from watching where I was going, and amidst the clamor and jostling crowd, my hand slipped, and I became separated from my father.

I screamed with terror and panic when I found myself alone. My father, to my surprise, rubbed my ear hard with his hand, as a form of discipline to bring me back to reality.

He said to me, “You impudent child! How many times have I warned you not to let go of my garment and not to leave my side?”

Because a young, inexperienced child cannot walk alone, and it is impossible for him to traverse a path he is unfamiliar with and has never seen before.

(Saadi addresses himself and the seeker on the Sufi path)

And you too—O poor one before God—are still an inexperienced child on the path of Sufi conduct/the pursuit of the path of Truth; so proceed and hold fast to the hand of those who know the ways of the Sufi path.

And beware of sitting with the worthless people of this world; for associating with them will remove from your heart the awe of the Almighty Truth and deprive you of the dignity of the Sufi path.

And cling firmly to the end of the rope of the pure ones. For the true knower (the one who walks the path of righteousness and true knowledge) feels no shame in humbling himself and seeking favor at the thresholds of the righteous.

In the balance of spiritual capacity, the followers (those seeking the Sufi path) are weaker than children, while the knowledgeable sheikhs (of the Sufi path) are the strong walls upon which the helpless (the beginner in the Sufi path) leans.

So learn (O seeker on the Sufi path) the principles of spiritual walking from that small child who, when he feels weak, leans against the wall to help him rise.

Only he who seeks refuge in the community of the righteous and pious (the true Sufis) and sat in their gathering, will escape the shackles of the wicked and immoral

And if you have a great need or a spiritual need, then adhere to this circle/community of righteous people (the true Sufis); for even kings and sultans cannot do without knocking on this door.

(Saadi’s advice)

So be, my son—according to Saadi’s way—a gatherer of knowledge, like one who gathers ripe ears of grain in the field. So that, with the passing of days, you may gather a bountiful harvest of knowledge and certainty.

O you who dwell in the sanctuary of divine intimacy, who will tomorrow be blessed with sitting at the table of divine holiness,

Do not turn your faces away from these poor followers (the needy, the ascetics, the seekers of the Sufi path) who have joined your ranks; for the generous and honorable do not turn away the intruder (the one who comes uninvited) who feeds on the bounty of his table.

Therefore, you must now make wisdom and sound judgment on your companions on your journey, in this life, Soon the doors will close (the end of life, death), and there will be no way for you to return and make amends.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

Lostness in the Feast (Ashub Khalq): The feast represents the “joys and adornments of this world,” and mystics believe that the soul captivated by these appearances loses sight of the “Father” (the spiritual guide or the Truth). This loss is not geographical but rather a heedlessness of the heart.

Holding onto it constantly (the edge): One of the most famous Sufi metaphors; “Daman graftan” means obedience and submission to a perfect sheikh. No matter how much knowledge a seeker acquires, he remains a “child” who needs to cling to the mantle of those who precede him.

The rope of purity: The rope is the one used to tie provisions behind the saddle. The seeker “clings” to the blessing of the righteous (pakan) to be carried in their company without any effort of his own, but rather by the strength of their company.

Gatherers of grain (khosheh chin): This is a metaphor for intellectual humility. Saadi describes himself and the seeker as “khosheh chin,” one who does not own a field but gathers what falls from the harvest of the elders. Humility in learning is the key to the fullness of “knowledge.”

The parasite and acceptance: In Arabic, “parasite” refers to one who follows a group to a feast to which he was not invited. In Sufism, the disobedient seeker hopes to be gathered with the righteous. As a “parasite”; For God, in His generosity, does not turn away those who follow His beloved and sit at their table.

Rubbing the ear (gosh-mali) symbolizes “trials of admonition.” God tests His servant to bring him back to His protection when he becomes heedless of the “games of this world.”

This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book Bustan means that the seeker at the beginning of his path to truth lacks the ability to walk alone and is threatened by getting lost in the crowd of materialism. His salvation depends on clinging to the guidance of perfect mentors. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides one to the “etiquette of following” and the necessity of “righteous companionship,” emphasizing that whoever holds fast to the “rope of the pure” and remains in the “circle of the righteous” attains the honor of sitting at the “table of the Holy” through the grace of those he follows, even if they are unwittingly joining their ranks
