If a boy reaches the age of ten, instruct him to avoid gatherings of unrelated women (non-mahrams) and to maintain the dignity of a man.
A fire should not be lit near cotton, for in the blink of an eye, the flames will engulf the entire house (a metaphor for the arousal of desire in a young boy when he attends gatherings of women).
If you desire that your memory be cherished and your legacy endure after your passing (O father), then make it your mission to teach your son wisdom, sound judgment, and wise counsel.
For if your son does not possess a sufficient share of intellect and good character, your memory will fade, upon your death, it is as if you left no one behind to carry on your name.
A son often tastes the bitterness of hardship in his early years if he grows up under the wing of a father who showers him with excessive indulgence and never exposes him to the difficulties and trials of life.
So, discipline your son well, so that he may be wise and pious. And if you truly love him in your heart, do not let him revel in the playgrounds of pampering and indulgence.
Instill discipline and education in him from his earliest years, and use a method of both encouragement and admonition with him. Reward him for his good deeds, and warn him of the consequences of his bad actions.
Know that praising a young student and encouraging him with words of praise is more beneficial and effective than the whips of rebuke and the threats of a teacher.
Teach the boy a trade or profession by which he can earn his living through honest labor, even if you possess treasures that rival the wealth of Croesus.
Do not rely on your current position, status, or wealth, for fortunes change, and blessings may be taken from their possessor in a moment of forgetfulness.
For treasures of gold and silver are destined to run out, but the treasure of the skilled craftsman his talent and craft are inexhaustible.
For you do not know what fate holds in store. Perhaps the vicissitudes of time will cast him (the son you are raising and teaching in his early years) a stranger, alone in a distant land.
If he is skilled in a craft that protects him from want, how can he possibly extend a hand in need and humiliation before others?
Do you not know how Saadi achieved his goal and reached this position? It was not by conquering the deserts with magical powers, nor by parting the seas with miracles (it was not a miracle like that of the Prophet Moses).
Rather, it is because Saadi endured the slaps of discipline from elders and scholars in his youth that God rewarded him in his adulthood with purity of spirit and elevated status.
For whoever submits to the authority of knowledge and obeys the commands of virtuous teachers will not long before becoming a respected leader and a teacher to others.
And the boy who does not experience the teacher’s rigor in the pursuit of knowledge will inevitably taste the bitterness of harshness and cruelty from the hands of fate.
Therefore, treat your child well and provide him with dignified comforts, so that he does not enter the world with eyes full of longing and covetousness for what others possess.
For whoever does not bear the burden of raising his child and caring for his affairs, others (the wicked) will take it upon themselves to raise him with their cunning, leading him to the depths of disrepute and ruin.
And protect him from evil companions and bad company. A bad companion (an unlucky fellow) will make him misguided and lost, like himself.
Contextual and Mystical Notes
Cotton and Fire: A powerful social metaphor warning against temptation before the mind has matured. In Eastern culture, “distancing oneself from strangers” (non-relatives) during adolescence is considered a protection of the “house” of honor from sudden destruction.
The Back of the Neck and Purity: Saadi connects “the back of the neck” (a slap on the back of the neck as a symbol of submission to the teacher) with “purity” (the state of spiritual purity). In mysticism, the seeker only reaches the truth through “steadfastness under the guidance of the sheikh.” Here, severity is not torture but rather a “refinement” of the human essence.
Qarun’s Treasure and Craft: Saadi establishes the value of “manual labor.” Mystics believe that a craft protects the seeker from The humiliation of needing creation, which frees the heart to rely on God Almighty.
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that the uprightness of generations depends on a delicate balance between firmness in discipline and gentleness in care, with an emphasis on equipping the young with intellect and skills to face the vicissitudes of time. It is important in moral and social education because it guides parents to understand that “building a human being” begins with breaking the arrogance of the ego at the hands of the teacher and ensuring the child’s self-sufficiency. It emphasizes that whoever is not disciplined by their parents and teacher with the gentleness of wisdom will be disciplined by time with the whips of poverty and loss.
