God has ordained the stillness of the night for your rest and the radiance of the day for your livelihood; He has subjected to your service the luminous moon and the sun—which bestows warmth and light upon existence through its rising.
{And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuously pursuing their courses}—never faltering, striving for your interests: marking the passage of time and serving the needs of your bodies, your livestock, your crops, and your fruits. {And He subjected for you the night}—that you might find repose within it—{and the day}—illuminated, that you might seek His bounty.
Indeed, the cosmos resembles a servant who, by the command of its Creator (God), spreads out before you the carpet of spring, flourishing in all its vibrant colors.
{And We made the sky a protected ceiling} and {He who made the earth a bed for you}.
Whether the winds gently sway, or snow and rain pour down from the clouds, or lightning unsheathes its blade like a sword and thunder strikes with its scepter…
…these cosmic forces are nothing but obedient, submissive soldiers and diligent agents, working ceaselessly to nurture the seeds within the earth’s depths for your sake, O human being.
So, should thirst overtake you (and you remain parched in that state for a time), let not your heart be troubled and distress of helplessness; for the clouds—those faithful bearers of water—will carry vast torrents upon their shoulders to quench your thirst.
And from the dark particles of the soil (the earth), the Creator—Exalted be He—brings forth for you a splendor of colors, exquisite fragrances, and wholesome nourishment, making existence a feast for the eyes, food for the mind, and a delight to the palate.
He bestowed upon you pure honey from the bellies of bees and delicious manna from the gentle breezes; He granted you fresh, ripe dates from the palm tree—a tree He caused to grow from a tiny, insignificant seed.
(There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people.)
(And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails.)
Even the most skilled gardeners would bite their fingers in sheer astonishment: how could any being fashion a palm tree of such miraculous perfection?
The sun, the moon, and the Pleiades cluster in the heavens are, but lamps suspended from the ceiling of your cosmic home, O human—lit by the power of God for your sake.
{And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps}
God Almighty who brought forth the fragrant rose from the thorn, the aromatic musk from the gazelle’s gland, precious gold from the rock, and lush foliage from the withered bough.
By the direct hand of His power and His command, He fashioned the features of your eyes and brows; for the act of creating you with such beauty is a guarded secret that cannot be entrusted to any other than the Divine Essence.
The All-Powerful—Glory be to Him—who has accustomed Himself to nurturing you with such tenderness and grace, will continue to shower you with manifold blessings and varied gifts.
The gratitude due to God Almighty must spring from the depths of the soul with every inhalation and exhalation; for how could the tongue alone bear the weight of such profound thankfulness?
O my Lord, my heart has melted with anguish, and my eyelids are raw from weeping; For I see Your boundless blessings transcending the limits of description and the reach of eloquence.
By this, I do not refer merely to the beasts, the livestock, the ants, and the fish upon the earth; rather, even the legions of angels stationed in the heights of the heavens…
…remain, to this very moment, unable to fully express their gratitude to You, having uttered but a single speck from among the tens of thousands of attributes of Your Majesty.
Oh Sa’di, cease counting these blessings of the Creator—Exalted be He—and put aside your notebook and book of verse; for attempting to complete this impossible journey is a futile endeavor.
Contextual and Gnostic Nuances
Nature in Service to Humanity (Farāsh-wār): Saadi employs the literary device of personification; the cosmos is not inanimate matter but a “chamber of service” prepared for the honored guest—humanity. In Gnosticism (‘Irfān), the world is viewed as the “body of existence” and the human spirit as its meaning; thus, the body is duty-bound to serve the spirit.
Divine Unity in the Minute Detail (Nakhl az Nawā): Saadi points to the date-palm “pit” (nawā) to illustrate that the magnificence of Divine craftsmanship manifests even in the smallest of causes. The sage perceives a complete “school of Divine Unity” within a single date; he looks past the actions of the date-palm cultivator to behold the action of the “Truth—Exalted be He.”
The Intimacy of Creation (Bi-dast-i Khudat): An eloquent allusion to the station of “Divine Selection.” Gnostics believe that while God created all things through the command “Be” (Kun), He created humanity with His “own hands” (as in the verse, “I breathed into him of My spirit”). This symbolizes the unique, heartfelt bond between the Creator and the servant.
The Intellect’s Inability to Offer Gratitude (Dast u Daftar Bishūy): This is the inevitable conclusion for one who contemplates God’s blessings: the “Station of Bewilderment” (Maqām al-Ḥayrah). The wayfarer on the Sufi path begins by offering thanks with the tongue, then the heart, only to discover that the very ability to offer thanks is itself a blessing demanding further gratitude—leaving him immersed in an ocean of incapacity.

Go forth, O Saadi; wash your hands and the ledger of your verse;
Do not tread a path that knows no end. You are attempting to traverse a path that knows no end, and seeking to describe that which eludes the grasp of all expression.
(Abandon the endeavor; cease these futile pursuits and lay aside your books and pens. For you cannot encompass the Unencompassable, nor can you traverse a path without end in your quest to comprehend the limitless attributes of the Creator—Exalted be He.)
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi’s Bustan signifies that the entire universe—with its celestial spheres, elements, and forces—has been subjugated by divine command to serve humanity and sustain its existence. It holds great significance for spiritual and intellectual cultivation, as it guides the seeker to perceive the “Hand of the Bestower” behind the veil of nature. It affirms that the perfection of servitude lies in realizing one’s utter inability to fully enumerate the praises due to the One who fashioned grace and beauty with the hand of His power, and who tends to the servant with the tender care of His mercy.
