Focus on the Essence of Humanity, and Abandon Flaws

It is said that there was a young man who possessed knowledge, intellect, and sound wisdom. He was a pioneer in the arts of preaching and guidance, eloquent in logic, and sharp intellect.

He was of pure character, with a heart connected to the truth (truly worshipping God with knowledge), a devout and pious worshipper. The charm of his features and the beauty of his presence were more captivating and alluring than the beauty of the finest handwriting.

He was a master of rhetoric, an expert in the intricacies of grammar and its rules, yet his tongue was unable to pronounce some letters (the letters of the alphabet) with perfect accuracy.

(Saadi recounts): that he once said to one of the wise men, the masters of hearts, the knowers: Have you noticed that so-and-so (that young man) is missing some teeth? (His front teeth)?

The wise man’s face reddened with anger at my words, and he shouted at me: “Stop this nonsense! Never utter such frivolous and reprehensible words again!

Did your gaze fall upon nothing but that flaw in that young man? Have the layers of your senses blinded your intellect, preventing you from seeing the abundant arts and talents that this young man possesses?”

“Listen to me with certainty, Sa’di!” For those with keen insight and true vision cannot perceive evil and ugliness in the sight of God Almighty.

For if a person honored with virtue, refinement, and sound judgment should stray from the path of perfection or infallibility,

then do not be harsh with him, nor blame him for a minor slip or a passing imperfection. Act upon the advice of the wise: “Take what is pure and leave what is turbid.”

For the rose and the thorn grow together in the same place, O discerning one; so why do you fix your gaze on the thorns? Leave aside the thorns and gather a fresh bouquet of flowers.

For he whose nature is overcome by ugliness, upon seeing the peacock, sees only the ugliness of its feet, oblivious to the splendor of its feathers and colors.

O you with the doubtful face (the skeptical, hesitant, bewildered one), strive to attain purity of heart. A mirror covered in dust and rust cannot reflect the faces before it clearly.

Seek a way to escape punishment and blame, instead of scrutinizing the words of others to pinpoint their faults and shortcomings.

O wise one, do not fixate on the flaws of others, for preoccupation with their shortcomings blinds you to your own.

How can I judge someone tainted by sin (criticize the mistakes of others harshly) when I know for certain that I myself am mired in the mire of my own sins?

It is unbecoming of you to be harsh and severe in your dealings with others while seeking excuses and justifications for yourself to conceal your own faults.

If you truly reject evil and consider it ugly, then begin with yourself first and avoid it. Only then should you advise your neighbor (your companion) to avoid it.

Whether I truly know the truth or I am merely feigning it, it is my outward appearance that connects me to you, while my inner self and secrets are solely in the hands of the Almighty Creator, and you have no say in them whatsoever.

Whether my life is good or bad, my God knows the secrets of my heart better than you do.

So remain silent, whether I am righteous or wicked. For I alone will bear the burden of my own gain and loss (whether in this world or the hereafter).

But you can only torment, through your rebuke (severe reproach or advice), that person who hopes for a favor from you or expects a reward for their actions.

For the Generous Creator records a single good deed for those with kind hearts as tenfold.

So how strange it is that you do not emulate your Creator! If you find one good quality in someone, overlook ten faults that mar them.

Do not limit your gaze to a single flaw, turning it over in your fingers and pointing it out each time, thereby erasing an entire world of virtues and merits.

For you are in your actions resemble those of an enemy who views Saadi’s poems with hatred, due to their inherently corrupt nature.

They turn a deaf ear to a hundred eloquent and subtle points and issues that Saadi explains, but the moment they finds a metrical flaw (a slight deviation) unrelated to the themes, they raise a clamor.

There is no specific reason or cause for this behavior, except that envy has blinded the eye, preventing them from seeing beauty and goodness, so that they now only desires the ugliness of this path.

Isn’t the Almighty, the Exalted, the One who fashioned the nature of all creation from eternity? He placed within them black and white, beautiful and ugly.

So, not all features you see are perfect and beautiful. Be discerning and seek only meaning and virtue. Discard the outer shell (the appearance) of your mind and do not search for imperfection.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The appearance and the handwriting: A brilliant metaphor comparing innate beauty (a growing beard) with acquired beauty (beautiful handwriting). Saadi is paving the way to prove that moral beauty (eloquence and preaching) is paramount.

Sudah (inner turmoil): This refers to the spiritual jealousy that overcomes the gnostic when he sees someone preoccupied with appearances rather than truths. The anger here is “anger for God” to preserve the sanctity of virtue.

Take what is pure: A quotation from the famous Sufi wisdom that calls for “abstraction.” That is, taking the luminous essence from everything and leaving the material impurities to the masses.

The Mirror of the Heart: In Sufism, the mirror is the heart. If it is tainted by sins or envy, it is no longer capable of reflecting the manifestations of divine beauty in creation. The critic who seeks faults possesses a “black mirror.”

Crawling in Poetry: Saadi used the “artistic term” to mock “mechanical criticism.” The enemy abandons the overarching wisdom to hold the poet accountable for a minor metrical detail unrelated to the subject.

The Core and the Shell: A major Sufi duality; The physical world is a shell, while spiritual meaning is the core. He who is preoccupied with the shell (the missing teeth) is deprived of the core (the eloquent sermon).

This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book, Bustan, means that intellectual perfection and spiritual purity lie in overlooking the flaws of appearances and striving to acquire the essence of virtues. It is important in moral and spiritual education because it condemns the “fault-hunting mentality” and calls for the path of divine justice. It affirms that he who removes his own flaws deserves to see beauty in creation, and that the truly enlightened one is he who consumes the essence of truth and discards the shell of imperfection for the heedless.
