If there is anyone in this world who has truly freed themselves from worldly constraints and grasped the essence of salvation, it is the one who has closed the doors of dependence on others and sought refuge in silence and introspection.
For no one has ever escaped the tyranny and injustice of tongues (of backbiting and slander), whether they are a hypocrite displaying their inner corruption before others, or a devout and sincere worshipper, devoting their life to obedience to God Almighty.
Even if you were to soar to the heavens on the wings of an angel, you would still find those harboring ill thoughts clinging to your hem, trying to drag you down into the abyss of accusation.
A person might, through their toil, build a dam to hold back the floodwaters of the Tigris, but they can never silence the tongues of the envious or shut them out.
Those tainted with the mire of sin (the wicked of this world) may gather to slander the righteous. They describe one as having a hollow piety (mere hypocrisy without genuine good deeds), and another as having made religion a trap for worldly gain (living off piety for worldly benefit, not for the sake of the Hereafter).
Do not turn your face (your heart and mind) away from worshipping the Almighty because of their words. Let people think of you as they wish, as worthless and insignificant. What value do their words have compared to what the Creator truly knows about you?
If a servant attains the station of contentment with the Holy God (Allah, the Exalted), what harm or fear is there if the envious remain immersed in their resentment and displeasure?
He who abuses others with his tongue is truly ignorant of God Almighty, for the noise of people (his companions, the evil ones) and their company have blinded him to the paths of true certainty (following the path of truth).
These people have strayed from the right path only because they erred in setting foot on the path of truth in their very first step; they made the approval of people their goal instead of the Creator, Almighty God.
Two people may listen to the same conversation, and one may understand the truth of it through angelic inspiration, while the other, through the whispers of Satan, understands it as a path of misguidance. The difference between them, as is clear, is like the difference between the earth (the soil and surface of the earth) and the Pleiades star cluster in the sky.
One may glean lessons and wisdom (advice), while the other sees only the point of criticism and objection, thus being deprived of the essence of advice, preoccupied as he is with tracking down faults (the words of others, their shortcomings, focusing solely on flaws).
And how can one who dwells in the corners of darkness and ignorance perceive the secrets of existence revealed in the mirror of truth (the mirror of the universe)?
So do not imagine that by the strength of a lion or the cunning of a fox you will escape the arrows of people’s tongues. Neither courage (your strength) will prevent them from speaking ill of you, nor will cunning silence them.
If a person withdraws from people, chooses a secluded corner, and avoids idle gatherings,
they will criticize him, saying: He feigns asceticism out of hypocrisy and deceit, like Satan, who flees from the company of humankind.
If he is cheerful, generous, and sociable, mingling with people, they will accuse him of lacking chastity and dignity, claiming he is far from piety.
If he is wealthy, they will tear him apart with backbiting, saying: If Pharaoh exists in this age, then this is him, the same tyrant with his wealth.
And if he weeps with a burning heart, like a poor man (or is truly poor) from the severity of his poverty, they will label him as unlucky, ill-omened, and of a dark destiny (he has no luck or fortune, he is unlucky in this world).
And if the privileged one falls from grace in this world, and loses his position, they consider it a blessing and a favor from God, and a descending justice.
And they will say of him mockingly: How long will this person continue with his arrogance and pride? For every pleasure is inevitably followed by sorrow (meaning, they say, he must endure hardship after having tasted happiness for a time).
But if God, by His power and good fortune, elevates the status of the poor and needy, and their position rises (happiness enters their home) by the decree of fate,
they clench their teeth in bitter resentment and venomous anger, and say: Woe to this degenerate age, which elevates only the vile!
And if they see you striving in your work, they accuse you of greed and worship of the world.
But if you abstain from work, seeking asceticism and devotion, they call you a beggar and a lazy person who feeds on the toil and effort of others.
And if you speak, they say: He is nothing but an empty drum filled with nonsense. If you remain silent, they will liken you to the silent drawings on the walls of bathhouses (hot water baths).
And if you feign patience in the face of hardship, they will say: “This is not a man, but a poor coward who cowers from confrontation out of fear.”
But if he displays courage and pride, they will flee from him, crying out: “Good heavens! What utter madness is this we are witnessing?”
If he ate little and was ascetic, they criticized him for being stingy with himself, saying, “He hoards money and is miserly with himself so that his heirs can enjoy it.”
If he became well-fed (eating the finest foods) and was pure and virtuous, they branded him as a glutton and a slave to worldly desires.
If the rich lived simply and without affectation, the wealthy and powerful would disdain to emulate him.
At the same time, the common people would sharpen their tongues against him like swords, saying, “How wretched he is! He possesses gold and yet denies himself its pleasures.”
And if he built ornate palaces and wore the finest silks,
he would not, and even never bear the severity of the descriptions people use for him, and they will liken him: he has adorned himself like a woman.
If a worshipper remains in his place and does not travel (for leisure, exploration, or wandering), the travelers (those accustomed to travel and wandering for various purposes, some for learning, others for recreation) will look down upon him, saying: “This is not a complete man.”
For how can one who has never left the confines of his home and the embrace of his wife possess wisdom, knowledge, or sound judgment?
If this person, for example, possessed a great capacity for travel and exploration, and had encountered diverse worlds and horizons, they would slander him, claiming he was homeless, lost, and unlucky.
And saying: If he truly had ample fortune, fate would not have cast him adrift from city to city.
And if he was single (never married), those seeking fault would criticize him, claiming that the earth groans under his presence without marriage (he moves from place to place, unable to sleep or settle down, like the earth itself, trembling and unstable).
And if he did marry, they would say he had succumbed to his desires and fallen headlong into the mire of responsibility, like a donkey stuck in mud, unable to escape its predicament.
Neither the ugly escapes the mockery and tongues of others, nor does the most charming person (beautiful, handsome, angelic-faced) avoid the slander of the wicked.
(Saadi tells a short story)
I had a servant (a young boy) with me in Egypt, a very shy boy who always lowered his gaze out of modesty and dignity.
Someone said to me, “This boy lacks wit and intelligence. Discipline him so that his mind may awaken (become wise and intelligent).”
So, when I reprimanded this servant harshly one night, the same person returned to me and said, “Alas! This man (Saadi) has ruined this poor slave life by his Injustice”
(Saadi returns to continue his exploration of the contradictions of creation and their affairs)
If you ever became angry, they described you as unstable and mentally deranged.
If you restrained your anger after becoming angry, they said: This man lacks honor and jealousy (he possesses no jealousy whatsoever).
If you were generous in your worldly affairs, they approached you and admonished you, saying: Stop being wasteful, lest you find yourself empty-handed tomorrow (your wealth vanishing through extravagance).
But if you were content, frugal, and conservative (in spending and avoiding waste), you fell into the trap of reproach and blame from people.
And they will say about you: This despicable man will die, like his father, leaving behind what he possessed, and will never receive blessings and departs this world in sorrow.
So who dares to seek or aspire to tranquility, to sit in dignity and escape the tongues of people in this world? Even the noble prophets were not spared the malice of their tongues.
Never forget, the Creator Himself—exalted above His creation—who is unique in His Oneness, having no partner, haven’t you heard, dear reader, what the Christians have dared to say about Him, the Most High?
(The Wisdom of Sheikh Saadi)
There is no escape for anyone from the tongues of creations of God, and the only recourse for the captive in the prison of their words is beautiful patience and clinging to the Truth, the Most High, alone, God Almighty (linking one’s destiny to the Truth, the Most High, alone, without the people)
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
The Tigris Dam and the tongues of creations of God: a geographical and environmental metaphor; Saadi believes that the great forces of nature are easier to control than the critical nature of humankind. In mysticism, a foul tongue is a “veil” with which God tests seekers to see their sincerity (are they working for His pleasure or for the pleasure of people?).
Tardamnan (the defiled): A powerful expression literally meaning “those with wet tails,” a metaphor for indulging in sins. These are the most critical of the righteous, masking their own personal shortcomings.
Jam-e Giti Namay (Mirror of the Universe): A symbol of the mystic’s heart, in which truths are reflected. Those preoccupied with the corners of darkness (the flaws of others) are deprived of seeing the totality of beauty in the mirror of existence.
Naqsh-e Garmawa (Painting of the baths): Public baths were decorated with silent paintings of heroes or monsters. Describing the silent work as a “painting of a bath” is a form of criticism. For stagnation and loss of spirit and dynamism
The safety of the prophets: Saadi refers to “being tested by people,” and the mystics see the harm inflicted by people as a “whip of discipline” that drives the servant to God’s door, fleeing from creation.
The words of the Christians (a shield): A Quranic reference to the doctrine of the Trinity or the claim that God, the One and Only, has a son. The argument here is “priority”; if God, the Creator, was not spared their words, how can the poor, created being expect to be safe from their tongues?
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that striving to gain the approval of people is an unattainable goal and a form of impossibility, and that every path a person takes will find someone to criticize it. It is important in psychological and spiritual development because it liberates the seeker from “slavery to the masses” and directs him towards “devotion to the Divine,” emphasizing that the true measure of success is the Creator’s pleasure, and that patience in the face of people’s idle talk is the only ladder to attain inner peace.
