Human essence is revealed to those endowed with insight

In this ghazal, Sheikh Saadi crafts a mystical epic that strips away the illusions of “calculating reason” and “outward propriety.” He calls for liberation from the shackles of reputation and worldly status within the taverns of self-annihilation—seeking instead to realize the essence of eternal “meaning” and to savor the intoxication of union during this fleeting sojourn.

English Translation

O Cupbearer of the Soul, grant us the wine of Divine Manifestation, for we are denizens of the taverns of self-annihilation, quaffing the dregs of ecstatic longing and subsisting on the bread of brokenness. We have become intimate with the realms of worldly dissolution—where the illusions of the ego crumble—and have grown utterly estranged from the calculations of material, self-interested reason.

We are a people who consume our very selves and offer up our souls at the Beloved’s threshold, much like a burning candle; and wherever the candle of Divine Beauty is kindled in any gathering, we are but the moths—drawn irresistibly, yearning to be consumed and vanish within its light.

Those who rely on outward knowledge and reason have no business with us in this spiritual realm; for what harm or setback could possibly befall the possessors of calculating minds when they see us wandering, lost in love for the Truth?

While some people adorn themselves with the outward appearance of righteousness and a good reputation—driven by hypocrisy—we, through our detachment from convention and our spiritual rebellion (our liberation), have become a legend that speaks to the sincerity of rising above worldly prestige.

Had you perceived, with your inner vision, the reality of this straight path, you would have known that we all walk upon a single way; and had you witnessed the essence of this cosmic realm, you would have seen that all souls belong to one primordial home—that of the primordial covenant (“Am I not your Lord?”).

Yet some claim that sovereignty and excellence lie in shrewdness and the pursuit of intellectual ambitions; say to those material boasts, “Let them vanish into the wind”, for we are free lovers, rejoicing in our liberation from the illusions of this limited, calculating mind.

The fault lies in the blindness of your vision—unable to perceive the hidden essences—for each of us dives into the ocean of eternal meaning to become a unique pearl, shimmering with the mystery of the Divine.

We arrived but yesterday from the desert of nothingness, and tomorrow we shall journey toward our ultimate return. The least we can do is seize this single night—spent here in the sanctuary of the Majaz (the temporal realm, this worldly life)—to experience the purity of spiritual ecstasy and the delight of divine nearness.

O Saadi, if your soul yearns for a pure draught of the wine of divine manifestation, then chant this sacred invocation once more: “O Cupbearer of the Soul, bestow upon us the wine of manifestation, for we are dwellers of the taverns of self-annihilation—we who drink the dregs of ecstasy and subsist upon the bread of brokenness.”

Contextual and Gnostic Nuances

The Tavern and the Dregs (Dardi-kash and Kharabat): In Persian Sufi literature, the Kharabat (tavern) is not a place of debauchery; rather, it represents the “station of the dissolution of human attributes” and the obliteration of the ego. The “drinker of the dregs” (dardi-kash) is the spiritual wayfarer who willingly embraces the hardships and bitterness of the path to attain Divine proximity.

The Burning of the Candle and the Moth (Sham’ and Parvaneh): A central Gnostic metaphor in the teachings of Sheikh Saadi and Attar; the moth is not content merely to behold the light from afar but is utterly consumed within it—a symbol of the “station of annihilation” (fana), or “dying before death.”

The Rind and the Malamati (Rindi and Qallashi): Sheikh Saadi champions the Malamati path—mystics who cast aside social reputation and outward prestige (nam-o-nang) to prevent hypocrisy from tainting their worship; for them, the purity of the inner self matters more than the praise of others.

The Pearl of the Ocean of Meaning (Gowhar-e Yekdaneh): Sheikh Saadi asserts that every soul is, in essence, a “unique pearl” fashioned by Divine Power and planted in the ocean of meaning. Ignorance and blindness do not reside in the soul itself, but rather in the “eye that fails to perceive the jewel” (chashm-e gheyr-e gowhar-bin)—an eye content with mere material surfaces.

The Desert of Non-Existence and Wayfarers (Biaban-e ‘Adam): An evocation of the “doctrine of existential journeying.” Man originates from the eternal realm of Divine Non-existence and journeys tomorrow toward Eternity; this life is merely “one night in the abode of the ephemeral,” and seizing it is achieved through spiritual intoxication and union with the Beloved.

This Sermon Means

The authentic human essence is revealed to those possessing spiritual insight yet remains hidden from the eyes of those focused on outward appearances. True spiritual freedom requires relinquishing the hypocrisy of seeking reputation and status in favor of pure immersion in the ocean of Divine Meaning. This concept holds significance for the path of mystical wayfaring and the purification of the soul, as it shatters the veils of “vanity” and “utilitarian intellect” (rationalism). It guides the seeker to perceive their intrinsic value as a unique pearl within the ocean of Divine Holiness, affirming that dying to the ego—within the taverns of Divine Love—is the sole gateway to attaining immortality.
