Modesty before the Creator, and modesty before the created being

In this story, Saadi, with his preaching scalpel, raises the issue of “psychological hypocrisy” and “the veil of creation”; It depicts a scene of a man who is ashamed before the gaze of a “slave” but oblivious to the gaze of “the Lord.” This is a call to the state of “mindfulness” and the attainment of sincerity, emphasizing that magnifying the gaze of people while despising the gaze of the Creator is the very essence of misguidance.

It is said that a man had resolved to commit a reprehensible act, his conscience firmly set on sin. While he was in this state, a righteous man of praiseworthy character and pure conduct passed by him.

As soon as his gaze fell upon this righteous man, he sat down, head bowed, his face flushed with shame and his features tinged with the sweat of embarrassment. He whispered to himself in alarm: “Oh, what a pity!” My secret was exposed, and I felt ashamed before the elder of this neighborhood.

When the elder, with his enlightened spirit and vigilant heart, heard this man’s words, his righteous zeal was aroused, and his conscience was stirred with righteous anger for God. He cried out to the young man, saying: “Young man,

You should have been ashamed of your own actions and the knowledge of your inner self. How can God Almighty be present and witness to your deeds, yet your shame and trembling are limited to my presence, a mere mortal servant, a servant of the All-Seeing Creator?”

Know for certain that you will never taste tranquility or find refuge with any of God’s creation. Go forth and let your sole concern be the care of God, for He is the All-Seeing, the All-Witnessing. This is the fortress that will suffice you against all else.

And let your modesty and fear of your Creator and Master be immense and awe-inspiring, just as you are extremely modest before strangers (and are ashamed to do wrong in their presence) or those close to you among creation. Indeed, let your fear be of the gaze of the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing (God), for this is the primary motivator of all your stillness and action in this world.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The Station of Contemplation: In mystical practice, contemplation is “the heart’s awareness of the Lord’s nearness.” In this story, Saadi criticizes the psychological state that makes a person fear “scandal” before people but not fear “sight” before the Creator. This is a kind of “hidden idolatry” in terms of people’s gaze. More awe-inspiring than God’s gaze

The Sheikh’s Jealousy (Peshwarid): The righteous sheikh’s distress was not solely due to the transgression, but also to the young man’s “disrespect” towards God. The young man had placed the sheikh on equal footing with God in terms of modesty, and “Roshan-e-Ravan” means that the sheikh’s insight penetrated the young man’s heart, revealing that his shyness was merely social pretense.

The Truth is Present (Divine Presence): “The Truth” is one of God’s beautiful names, and its association with the word “present” alludes to the verse: {Does he not know that God sees?}

Modesty before strangers and family: Saadi employs a social measure (modesty before family and strangers) to clarify the meaning. If a person refrains from wrongdoing out of shyness before a child who witnesses it, how can they not feel shy before the Creator of all powers and understanding (the All-Knowing)?

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that being preoccupied with the gaze of creation while neglecting the gaze of the Creator is the ultimate ignorance of the true meaning of monotheism. True modesty should be directed towards the “Eternal Presence,” from which not an atom’s weight escapes. It is important in spiritual and moral education because it guides the seeker to the “station of vigilance” and warns against the hypocrisy of the heart, which fears worldly disgrace and is oblivious to divine majesty. It emphasizes that true tranquility is only attained by making God the “sole observer” in secret and in public.
