Satan and the evil-commanding soul

Memories flooded back of times I spent with my father, may God have mercy on him, and showers of mercy rained down upon him at every moment.

When I was a child, he bought me a slate and notebook for my studies, and purchased for me a ring of pure gold to adorn my finger.

Suddenly, a passerby (a cunning buyer) approached me and, with a trick, snatched the ring from my finger in exchange for a single date.

For the naive child who doesn’t understand the preciousness and value of gold, it’s easy for swindlers to steal the treasures he possesses for a piece of candy or a cheap date.

And you too—O The heedless one—you did not know the value of your precious life, so you gambled it away and squandered it on the altar of a life of ease and fleeting pleasures.

For on the Day of the Great Gathering (the Day of Resurrection), when the righteous ascend to the heights of glory, and pass from the depths of the earth (the grave) to the highest heavens (the Pleiades),

you will remain, head bowed in utter shame, as the images of your ugly deeds surround you and stare at you from every side.

So, my brother, rise above the deeds of the wicked, out of shame! So that you may not face the faces of the righteous tomorrow shrouded in regret and sorrow.

For on that dreadful Day, when all of creation is questioned about their deeds and words (their actions and words in this world), even the most resolute prophets will tremble with awe and dread (despite their being above all sin in this world, for they are the truthful prophets of God who fulfilled their mission with strength and determination, and established it. So what about you? A creature burdened with many sins).

And in a situation like the Day of Resurrection, when astonishment will seize the hearts of the prophets, what wretched excuse will you offer for your sins? Listen carefully, and consider your fate.

For the women who eagerly embrace obedience will far surpass those frivolous men who have cast piety aside.

And you, do you not feel ashamed of claiming chivalry, while women enjoy a higher standing and greater favor than you?

Women have well-known, innate excuses that sometimes prevent them from performing religious duties.

But you sit idly by, without excuse, neglecting obedience to God, as if you had an excuse like women. Have some shame, you who are beneath the rank of women, and do not boast of your supposed chivalry and manliness.

What can my words add to the wisdom of the ancients? The master of eloquence (a poet named ‘Unsari’) proclaimed this very meaning, saying:

”If you deviate from the path of righteousness, you are flawed and deformed (the deficiency is in you, the deviation from righteousness, the shortcoming is yours). What kind of manliness is it that makes its possessor lower than a woman?”

Let’s suppose you indulge yourself in pleasure and merriment, know that you are doing nothing but fattening and strengthening your sworn enemy so that it may devour you (the evil-commanding self within you).

(A short story by Saadi)

It is said that a man raised a wolf cub and cared for it. When that wolf grew up and its strength became undiminished, it pounced on its owner and tore him to pieces.

And when that man lay on his deathbed, breathing his last, an eloquent man approached him and whispered in his ear, saying:

“Didn’t you know, my friend, that when you indulge your enemy and nurture it with such tenderness, your inevitable fate to taste the bitterness of his stabs?

Did not the accursed Satan mock us, demanding his due before God Almighty for leading us astray, claiming that only vile deeds emanate from the children of Adam?

Alas, because of the evil that lurks within us, I truly fear that Satan’s suspicion of us will prove true, and that we will betray the Creator’s trust (that we will not follow Satan’s footsteps).

For God expelled that accursed one (Satan) from His presence for our sake (and indeed, He has honored the children of Adam), and at that time he swore that our subjugation, our temptation, and our ruin would be his ultimate goal (the goal of the accursed Satan).

(He said, “My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected.” (79) He said, “Indeed, you are of those granted respite (80) until the Day of the appointed time.”) (81) He said, “By Your might, I will surely mislead them all, (82) except for Your chosen servants among them.”

(God Almighty said, “The truth is, and I say the truth, (84) I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them who follow you, all of them.” (85)

How can we raise our heads from the filth of this shame and disgrace, when we have made peace with Satan (the soul that incites to evil, the Satan of the soul) and declared war on the Truth, Glory be to Him?

Indeed, the Beloved (God Almighty) will not look upon you with favor except Rarely, as long as your face is turned towards the enemy (desire/Satan/the lower self) and you are absorbed in appeasing the enemy,

if you seek to attain union with the Beloved (God) and yearn for the fruits of His grace, then it is not fitting for you to submit to the enemy’s commands and surrender control of your affairs to him.

For whoever chooses the enemy to be the companion of his solitude and the partner in his abode (within himself dwells Satan and the lower self), has permitted himself eternal estrangement from the company of the Beloved (God Almighty).

Do you not know that the Beloved (God) is too exalted to enter a dwelling (the heart) inhabited by an adversary (Satan)? How can you hope for the divine presence within you when your heart is a dwelling place for Satan?

What is it you hope to buy with the paltry price of this world, that you would sell the love of Joseph (a metaphor here from Sa’adi, the Spirit/God Almighty, meaning you sold the Hereafter for enmity towards the Creator, and became a follower of Satan)?

If you possess even a shred of reason or wisdom, do not turn your back on the Beloved (God Almighty). For if you are under His protection and care, the enemy will not dare to even glance at you with ill intent.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The Ring and the Date (A Metaphor for Life): Saadi uses a powerful, sensory metaphor; the ring represents “life/soul” and the date represents “worldly pleasure.” Man is like a child, selling the treasure of eternity for a fleeting pleasure that melts in the mouth and leaves only regret.

The Prophets and Awe: The evocation of the terror of the Day of Judgment, to the point that even the (infallible) prophets tremble, aims to crush the “conceit of the worshipper” in his deeds. If the friend of God (Prophet Abraham) trembles on the Day of Resurrection, what will be the state of the one burdened with sins?

The Wolf’s Cub (The Commanding Soul): This is one of Saadi’s most powerful metaphors for the “soul.” A person who feeds and indulges his desires is like one who raises a wolf in his home. The wolf is not softened by kindness; rather, its strength grows until it ultimately devours the “heart.”

Man and Woman (The Rank of Obedience): Saadi uses the language of his time to rebuke the lazy. If a woman (who is considered weaker in this context) surpasses a man in obedience, this is a downfall for those who claim “manliness” (spiritual chivalry).

Joseph and the worthless silver: In Sufism, Joseph symbolizes “divine truth” or “spiritual beauty.” Selling Joseph for “a few coins” represents the state of one who sells their hereafter for this world, and “Sim Seh” (black silver) symbolizes base, fleeting metal.

The house and hospitality: In mysticism, the heart is “the house of God,” and desire (the enemy) and the One (the friend) cannot coexist in one house. Expelling the enemy (Satan) is a prerequisite for the presence of the friend (God).

This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book Bustan means that ignorance of the value of life leads a person to destruction when they sell eternity for fleeting pleasure, and that the most dangerous thing The trial a person faces is indulging their own “self,” which is a ravenous wolf lying in wait for their soul. This is important in spiritual and emotional development because it warns against “making peace with Satan” at the expense of “connecting with the Truth,” emphasizing that the heart is a dwelling that cannot accommodate both the beloved and their adversary simultaneously, and that whoever sells “the truth of Joseph” for a pittance will reap nothing but regret on the Day of Resurrection.
