Come, let us come to know one another, lest separation overtake us and leave us alone without a companion.
(Rumi here calls for spiritual vigilance and appreciation of the “now,” for death is a sudden reality that ends all opportunities for connection.)
Since it is certain that a believer is a mirror to his fellow believer, why do we turn away from one another, when we both reflect the same truth?
(The use of the “mirror” symbol reflects Rumi’s view of humanity as beings that reflect the divine beauty found in others.)
For the noble ones sacrificed their lives for the Beloved (God), so abandon the instincts of beasts (animalistic enmity and hatred), for we are, in our essence, human beings created for love.
(This is a call to abandon the lower self and ascend to the spiritual station of “humanity.”)
Why don’t we recite incantations like “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak'” and “Say, ‘He is God, the One'” out of love for one another, to protect our hearts from envy, Satan, and discord?
(Rumi employs the Quranic text as a “spiritual charm” or a spiritual magic that unites hearts.)
For personal desires and ambitions darken the mirror of friendship and cloud its purity, so why don’t we banish these desires from the depths of our hearts?
(Objects are the veils that prevent the “purification of the inner self” and the attainment of spiritual purity.)
Sometimes your heart only opens to me when I die. Why do we venerate the dead while we are alive? Is this a conflict of souls?
(A scathing critique of human nature, which only recognizes the value of a person after it’s too late.)
Since you will surely reconcile with me after my death, why do we endure all this hardship and suffering of estrangement and conflict while we are still alive?
(Mawlana questions the point of wasting life on conflicts that will inevitably end with death.)
Imagine now that I am truly dead, then reconcile with me, for we are in a state of submission and surrender to the Almighty, no different from the dead.
(A reference to the concept of “die before you die” and the annihilation of the ego.)
If you will come tomorrow to kiss the dust of my grave, then kiss my cheek now (for reconcile), for I am now the one who will lie beneath the earth.
(An invitation to direct sensory and emotional connection before the body turns to dust.)
Be silent now, my heart, like the silence of the dead, for it is our tongues that lead us to the accusation of selfish existence and vanity.
(Mawlana concludes with his famous word “Khamsh/Khamush” (Be silent), considering talk of the “self” an obstacle to absolute truth.)
This poem, or ghazal, by Rumi expresses the necessity of reconciling with others and abandoning the inflated ego before it’s too late. It serves as a reminder that true love begins with the annihilation of personal desires, and that “spiritual death” (humility) is the only path to eternal life in the hearts of others.
