Using God’s blessings and favors in proper worship

Consider the creation of a single finger on the hand, how divine power has arranged its joints and assembled its parts with exquisite precision to perform its intricate functions.

It is the height of mental confusion and folly to dare to use your finger (which is purely God’s creation and not made by humankind) to point at the letters of His wisdom and creation.

And reflect upon the manner/position/behavior of human walking; How many solid bones are connected by nerves and tendons to enable smooth movement?

Were it not for the flexibility of the heel, the bend of the knee, and the straightness of the leg, no human being could take a single step off the ground.

And the prostration in prayer was made easy for humankind only because the vertebrae of the spine are not a single rigid piece, but rather a flexible system of joints.

The Creator arranged hundreds of vertebrae, one upon another, to fashion from the clay of the earth a magnificent human jewel like you.

And look at the network of your veins, O noble one! Your body is like fertile land in which God has caused three hundred and sixty rivers (streams of blood) to flow, so that life may continue.

God placed sight in the head as a guide, and instilled thought, insight, and discernment in your mind. He made the limbs subservient to the heart’s commands, and honored the heart with the light of knowledge and understanding (the heart here is a metaphor for the mind, open and guided to the light, because the heart is responsible for pumping blood into the fertile land that Saadi speaks of).

So you see the beasts bowed down in humiliation, while He has set you upright like the letter “alif” in the Arabic alphabet, like a master walking on your own two feet, head held high.

For the beasts lower their heads in compulsion to seek pasture. (Grasshopping and eating are animalistic instincts), but for you, sustenance comes to you, raised high to your mouth in honor and dignity.

Therefore, it is not befitting for you, in this state of sovereignty and exaltation, to bow your head to anyone other than the One who bestowed this glory upon you, who is God Almighty.

For the Creator, may He be exalted, has showered you with His blessings, providing you with wholesome fruits (grains), not straw (hay, which is animal feed), and He has not made you like cattle, wandering about, searching for sustenance in the grass.

But beware of being deceived by this outwardly handsome image, which you find acceptable; Rather, strive to acquire a good inner character and virtuous morals.

For the important thing is the uprightness of one’s path (the right way), not merely the uprightness of one’s stature. The disbeliever, inevitably, shares with us the beauty of form and appearance, for we all return to the Creator alone.

And He (God Almighty) who bestowed upon you the blessings of sight, speech, and hearing, sound reason dictates that you should not use His gifts and favors to defy or disobey Him.

Suppose you possessed the strength to crush your enemies with stones (with extreme hardness), then beware of persisting in your ignorance to fight the “Supreme Friend” (God) with the very weapons of the blessings He has favored you with.

For those of sound mind, who understand the value of Divine favor, secure and preserve blessings from vanishing with the utmost care with gratitudes to God alone.

Semi-Poetic

Behold the crafting of a single finger’s joint—
How divine power wove its parts with perfect point.
What madness, what confusion of the mind,
To raise that self-same finger, pointing blind
At letters of His wisdom and His art,
When it is purely His, not human art.

Consider man’s own gait—how many bones
He knit with nerves and tendons, joint by joint,
That without supple heel, the knee’s deep bend,
And straightness of the leg, no step could send
A foot above the earth.

Prostration came light to Adam’s son
Because his spine is not a rigid bone,
But hundreds of fine vertebrae, arrayed
One atop another, forming from clay
A living jewel like you, magnificently made.

Look at the veins within your noble frame—
A fertile field where God three hundred sixty streams
Of blood has caused to flow, that life may reign.

Sight placed within the head as trusty guide,
Thought, insight, and discernment in the mind;
Limbs made obedient to the heart’s command,
The heart itself illumined by knowledge’s light.

Thus, beasts are bowed in low humiliation,
While you stand upright like the letter Alif, tall,
A sovereign walking on your feet, head high.
They bend their heads by force to graze the ground;
To you comes sustenance, raised in dignity.

So it befits you not, in such high state,
To bow your head to any but the One
Who granted you this glory—God alone.

He gave you wholesome grain, not beasts’ dry straw,
Nor made you wander, grazing like the herd.
Yet be not fooled by this fair outward form;
Strive rather for a pure and noble soul.

The straightness that matters is the path you tread,
Not merely upright stature—
For the unbeliever too shares beauty of face,
And all return at last to the Creator’s grace.

He who bestowed on you sight, speech, and ear—
If you are wise, use not His gifts to rebel.

Suppose you had the strength to crush your foe with stone—
Still, fight not the Supreme Friend with weapons of His own.
The wise, who know the worth of every grace,
Fasten their blessings firm with gratitude’s embrace.

Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia

The Philosophy of Prostration (Mehra Yek Lakht Nist): Saadi connects the physical constitution with the spiritual function; The back, composed of vertebrae (mehra), is a physiological invitation to bow down to God. Stiffness in the back is a physical ailment, and stiffness in the heart is a spiritual ailment.

Man is a microcosm: Saadi applies the philosophy that “man is a condensed version of existence.” The finger and joints are not physical mechanics, but rather a divine language crafted by the “Fashioner” to confound the human mind.

The 360 Rivers: Ancient sciences (and Greco-Persian medicine) posited the existence of 360 basic arteries in the body, roughly corresponding to the number of days in a year. Saadi uses this number to illustrate that humanity is a “sacred land” nourished by the rivers of divine power.

The Stature of a Thousand: In mysticism, the thousand (alif) symbolizes unity and uprightness. Saadi sees the upright posture of humankind as an “honor” bestowed upon them by God, distinguishing them from animals, so that their gaze remains fixed on heaven, not earth.

The Nail of Gratitude (mikh spas): A metaphor for securing blessings. In Sufism, gratitude is the “bond of blessings.” For blessings are like wild beasts; they flee from ingratitude, but are nurtured and sustained through acknowledging the Giver of blessings.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that contemplating the intricacies of human creation and the beauty of divine craftsmanship in the body is the shortest path to knowing the Giver of blessings and attaining the station of gratitude. It is important in spiritual and intellectual development because it guides the seeker to understand that physical uprightness is not enough without righteous conduct. It emphasizes that human perfection lies in using one’s senses and faculties in obedience to the Creator, and that gratitude is the spiritual “nail” that preserves God’s blessings from fading and disappearing.
