Spiritual education and Patience

I (Saadi) am so overwhelmed with gratitude to the Supreme Benefactor (Allah Almighty) that I cannot even catch my breath. For I find no words of thanks in the lexicon of servitude that could adequately express His sublime station and the immensity of His bounty.

Every hair that grows on my body is a generous favor and a blessing from Him, so how could I possibly offer thanks for each hair individually?

All praise and glory belong to the Generous Creator, who brought this servant forth from the abyss of non-existence into the light of existence.

Who can possibly fully comprehend the extent of His benevolent gifts? All descriptions pale and vanish before the magnificence of His power and majesty.

He (God) is the Creator who fashioned the human form from clay, then breathed into it His spirit, and bestowed upon it the faculties of intellect, awareness, and insight (the heart).

So reflect, O human being, upon your journey from the time you were in your father’s loins until you reached the most feeble stage of life, and see how God Almighty has bestowed upon you, from the perfections of the unseen, the garments of honor and dignity.

And since the Creator, may He be exalted, brought you into this world with a pure nature, be vigilant and keen to preserve that purity in this life. It is truly shameful to be buried in the dust of one’s grave stained with the filth of sins.

Continue to cleanse the mirror of your heart from the dust of heedlessness; for if rust (on the heart, the pure mirror) takes hold of the metal and consumes it, no polishing tool can restore its shine.

Were you not, in your beginning, merely a drop of fluid? If you claim to be honorable, then cast aside the pride of ego.

And if you earn your living through your own hard work, never rely on your own strength or think that the credit belongs to your own efforts (meaning that God is the Provider who provides for you according to His decree, not your own strength, however great it may be).

Why do you not see the hand of the Almighty, O captive of your own self (worshipper of your own desires)? He is the One who instilled movement in the joints of your hands and directed your arms towards work.

So know that every good you reap from your efforts is pure divine favor, not the product of intellect or mere exertion.

No one has ever achieved success (obtained what they desired) solely through physical strength. Therefore, direct your gratitude to the Giver of success, the Most High.

You do not possess the ability to stand or take a single step on your own. Rather, sustenance (provision is a divine decree ordained for you) comes to you from the unseen realm at every moment and in the blink of an eye.

Were you not once a child in the womb of your mother, unable to speak or boast of herself? Yet, God Almighty decreed that your sustenance would flow into your womb through your navel.

When the umbilical cord was severed (at birth), and that readily available sustenance ceased, the Creator, in His power, inspired you, without your conscious awareness, to cling to your mother, so that she might give you the source of life.

The fetus, in its isolation within its mother’s womb, is like a patient whom the Creator heals with an antidote from the soil of his land. It was nurtured in the placenta and received its nourishment from the stomach (via the umbilical cord, after the mother had consumed food through her stomach).

This source of sustenance that the infant yearns for from its mother is, in truth, a spring (or springs) that the Almighty Creator has caused to gush forth from the very source of divine care for you.

And the mother’s loving embrace is the child’s paradise on earth, where the milk (the source) flows like the sweet rivers of paradise.

The mother’s form is like a tree that nourishes souls, and the child (the son) is its sweet fruit that hangs from the branches of her compassion.

Did you not know that the veins of the source (the milk) are connected to her heart? If you reflect with insight, you will find that this milk, so palatable to drink, is nothing but the blood of the heart, transformed into mercy, by the power of God, for the infant.

It is as if this infant is digging his teeth into his mother’s blood, while her very nature, by the power of God Almighty, is inclined to love this child thirsting for her blood and to be gentle with him.

Then, when the child grows stronger (and possesses the ability to rely on natural food) and his canines emerge, the wet nurse coats the sources of the milk with the bitter substance of aloe, to wean him and turn him away from her.

Thus, the bitterness of aloe compels the child to relinquish his attachment. He ceases to crave milk and forgets the sweetness of the nourishing stream that was once his only refuge.

And you, O seeker (Sufi) aspiring to reach the station of repentance, act like the child who has weaned himself. Know that your patience in enduring the bitterness of abandoning desires is what will make you forget the sweetness of indulging in sin and purify your soul from its defilement.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

Mirror of the Heart (Ayineh Del): A central Sufi metaphor; The mystics liken the heart to a mirror that must be polished through remembrance (purification) to reflect the manifestations of God Almighty. The rust here represents sins and heedlessness, which, if accumulated, completely obscure the light.

The pun between “semen” and “Ego”: Saadi skillfully employs linguistic ingenuity to break down arrogance. Man was created from “semen” (a lowly, degrading drop of fluid), so how can pride or the (ego) possess him?

The Unity of Action (qa’im bi-khud nistī): Sa’adi emphasizes that “self-sufficiency” is a great illusion. The seeker witnesses that every movement and stillness is by divine providence, and this is the essence of gratitude in this chapter (Chapter 8 of the Book of Bustan).

Mother’s Milk (khun dal): Sa’adi connects the divine creation of the mother with emotion; Milk originates from blood, transformed by God’s power to suit the infant’s vulnerability. In mysticism, this symbolizes that “affliction” (blood) can be transformed into “mercy” (milk) through divine love.

The allegory of “aloe”: “Aloe” is a bitter-tasting plant used for weaning children, and it simultaneously means “patience” (endurance). Saadi uses this sensory imagery to convey an educational meaning. Repentance is a “weaning” from sin through the bitter struggle against the lower self.

The “child of the path” (or “child of the way”): This term is used for the novice (Sufi) seeker who needs to be “weaned” from worldly pleasures to ascend to the station of spiritual maturity.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that true gratitude begins with acknowledging God’s glory and absolute dependence on divine providence. Human perfection is contingent upon purifying the mirror of the heart and weaning the soul from the pleasures of sin through the bitterness of patience. It is important in spiritual education because it charts the path from “selfishness” to “unity,” emphasizing that… The Most High, the Beneficent, who nurtured man from sperm to embryo, is the one most deserving of submission to His will and obedience to His guidance.
