It is said that a devout and ascetic man, known for his purity of conduct and sincere devotion to God Almighty, stumbled upon a brick of pure gold.
The allure of the metal (gold) captivated his wise mind, and he was overcome by desire, love of gold and worldly luxury, until the light of obedience to God Almighty, once illuminating his heart, was dimmed.
He spent his nights sleepless, weaving threads of illusion, imagining that this treasure would remain his for life, and that want and need would never touch him again.
He told himself: “From this day forward, I will never need to show humility or bow before anyone to ask for anything, for this gold has spared me the humiliation of begging.
I will build a magnificent palace, its foundations resting on polished marble, and its roof timbers made of the rarest, most fragrant aloeswood.
I will dedicate a unique wing to receiving my friends, its balconies overlooking a lush garden within my sanctuary.
For mending rags and patching my clothes has wearied me, and the fumes from the hearth have burned my eyesight and exhausted my mind.
But now, servants will hover around me, preparing the most delicious dishes, and I will grant my soul the comfort and tranquility of life and luxury
For this rough felt mat has worn me down, and from now on I will replace it with the finest, most luxurious carpets”
These fantasies have driven him to madness, and his face has grown pale, as if the cancer of obsessive thoughts has sunk its claws into the very tissue of his brain.
He has lost the tranquility he once enjoyed in communion with his Lord, and the sweetness of remembrance and the humility of prayer have vanished from his life. Even the taste of sleep and food has disappeared from his mind.
So one day he went out wandering towards the deserts, intoxicated by the wine of illusion, tossed about by the winds of anxiety, finding no rest in any place.
He saw a person at the edge of a grave, kneading/preparing clay to make bricks from the grave’s soil for building tombs.
The sheikh was lost in deep contemplation for a few moments, then cried out, rebuking himself: “O my short-sighted soul, awaken and learn from this scene!
Why do you entrust your heart to this golden brick, when you know for certain that fate will one day turn your body into clay from which tomb bricks will be made (as this person is doing before me)?”
For the abyss of greed within the soul is as wide as a chasm, and it will not be plugged by a single morsel of worldly riches, no matter how large.
So, keep your hand away, poor soul, from this gold (this golden brick); for is it conceivable that one could dam the mighty flow of the Oxus River with a single brick?
You are immersed in calculations of profit and the accumulation of wealth, while the true capital of your life slips away, trampled underfoot by heedlessness, without your knowledge.
For the dust of your desires has settled upon the eyelids of your intellect, and the scorching winds of August have burned the harvest of your life and destroyed your crops.
So remove the kohl of heedlessness from your eyes now, before you depart tomorrow to become kohl (dust) in the depths of the ground (the grave).
Contextual and Mystical Notes
The Allure of the Golden Brick: In Bustan, gold often represents a “veil of light”; The temptation that comes to the devout to test their sincerity, and the transformation of the worshipper from “communicating with God” to “communicating with gold,” is the spiritual fall that Saadi warns against.
Crab’s claws (Kharchang): A powerful ancient medical metaphor; Saadi likens worldly worries to “cancer” that sinks its claws into the brain and refuses to let go. In mysticism, “distracted thoughts” are the greatest obstacles to the Divine Presence.
Capital (Sarmayeh): Saadi reiterates the idea that “time” is capital. Exchanging remaining time for gold is a clear loss in the “trade of the Hereafter.”
The Oxus River and the brick: A brilliant simile; life is like a flowing torrent (the Oxus), and trying to stop this torrent or buy survival with a “brick of gold” is a naive and impossible endeavor.
The kohl of heedlessness and the kohl of dust: A stunning verbal and metaphorical play. Negligence is like kohl that adorns the world, blinding us to the truth. Death will turn the entire body into dust (kohl) scattered by the wind into the eye of the grave.
Oud wood and marble: symbols of royal luxury in the Middle Ages. Saadi wants to say that when the worshipper was captivated by gold, he didn’t think about “bread” but rather about “splendor,” indicating that greed is not satisfied with merely fulfilling basic needs.
This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book, Bustan, means that the glitter of material possessions can darken even the most enlightened hearts if they succumb to greed and forget the inevitability of death. It is important for spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to understand that the “bricks of gold” with which he builds his palaces of illusion in this world will one day become “bricks of clay” beneath which his body will be buried. It emphasizes that true well-being lies in shedding the “kohl of heedlessness” before the “capital of life” falls into the winds of death.
