The Sword of Love, and Acceptance of the Beloved’s trials

In this Ghazal, Saadi reaches the pinnacle of “individualism”; He places the two worlds (this life and the hereafter) on one side of the scale, and the “Face of the Most High Truth” on the other, to proclaim the doctrine of lovers who seek nothing from God but God Himself.

The ultimate goal of those who cherish love in both realms (this life and the hereafter) is nothing other than attaining Your presence (God). The highest aspiration of those who tread the path of truth is to reach the station of Your acceptance.

Wherever a king, or one with power or authority, exists in this world, he is in reality subject to Your decree. Indeed, he is a humble servant of the humblest of the poor, standing submissively at Your doorstep.

And I have vowed to myself (Saadi) to conceal the anguish of My love for you is a secret, but how can’t I reveal it when the whole world resounds with your name, and the entire city has become a stage for the magnificence of your story?

Every crowned, high-ranking, or worldly leader owes their very existence to the threshold of Your majesty, deriving their honor from the shadow of Your glory.

Some are preoccupied with the fleeting pleasures of this world, while others focus their aspirations solely on attaining Paradise in the Hereafter. But we… we have no desire or ambition in this world or the next except for You.

No mind, wherever it may be, is free from the wounds of Your love, and no heart beats except bound by the chains of Your affection and held captive by longing for You.

For no creature has permanence eternal, and no covenant is immune to decay, for everlasting dominion and true, permanent existence are attributes of Your beauty alone.

So whether You draw us to You with the gentleness of Your care or punish us with the whip of Your power and trial, we are content in both cases. For we have no desire except what Your decree approves.

The hopes of creation are tied to the fulfillment of their material needs and limited desires, but our hope, we who walk in Your path, is built upon the vastness of Your mercy, which knows no bounds or limits.

Every person places their hopes upon the good deeds they have performed in this world, but Saadi has no support or refuge except Your pure grace and bounty.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

Unity of Desire (Meeting and Contentment): Saadi asserts that the “gnostic” is one who transcends the worship of “Paradise” (blessings) to Worship of the “Benefactor,” and the encounter and contentment are the goals of the spiritual journey, where reward and punishment become veils before the face of the Beloved.

The Sultanate of Poverty (Gaday-e Tu): In Saadi’s literature, the “poor of God” is the true king, because earthly kings are governed by causes, while the sincere poor are connected to the Causer of Causes. The “ring in the ear” symbolizes servitude, which is the essence of freedom from worldly attachments.

The Compelling Beauty (Shamshir-e Eshgh): For Saadi, love is not a pleasure, but rather a “wound” (Khasteh) and a “captivity” (Basteh). The sword symbolizes the “manifestation of Majesty” that cuts off the heads of selfish desires to revive the soul with the “manifestation of Beauty.”

The Station of Actual Contentment (Lutf va Qahr): This is the pinnacle of righteousness. The seeker makes no distinction between bestowal and withholding, for both emanate from the Beloved (God), and pleasure lies in the divine “act” itself, not in the “type” of act.

The bankruptcy of action (the actions of humility): Saadi concludes with the “station of neediness.” He believes that relying on one’s own deeds is a form of self-admiration (hidden idolatry), and that true salvation lies in trusting in divine grace, not in earning one’s own merit through actions.

Ghazal Meaning

That the perfection of monotheism is manifested in directing one’s entire focus towards the Divine Essence and in absolute acceptance of the vicissitudes of fate, both its kindness and its hardships. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the station of detachment, where one sees dependence on God as true sovereignty. It affirms that the servant’s true wealth is not their limited deeds, but rather pure hope in the Creator’s endless mercy, and that truth is the sole objective before which the demands of this world and the hereafter pale in comparison.
