A virtuous woman, obedient to her husband in what is right and pious in her private life, can make a poor man a revered king in his own home.
So if you are blessed with a partner who matches your nature and shares your sentiments, you can be proud of your dominion and celebrate your victory five times at your doorstep, as great sultans do.
And do not let your heart be troubled if worries overwhelm you throughout the day in the toil of life; As long as you have a companion in the stillness of the night to dispel your sorrows and comfort you, you are safe and secure.

Indeed, whoever’s home is filled with tranquility, and whose partner is a close, affectionate, and friendly friend, has been blessed with a merciful and special favor from the Creator, may He be glorified.
If a woman combines the veil of chastity with the radiance of her features, her husband will find himself in a perpetual paradise and immediate bliss whenever his gaze falls upon her face.
No one truly attains their desire for the pleasures of this world unless they are blessed with a tranquil heart (a wife) who shares their soul and lives with them in perfect harmony and affection.
And if your partner is pious and sweet in speech and conversation, then pay no heed to the scales of outward beauty or ugliness. For the beauty of the soul overshadows all imperfections.
A woman of good character is more endearing to the heart and more conducive to companionship than one of striking beauty. For good manners and kindness conceal physical flaws.
And a woman of unattractive appearance (as ugly as the devil) but kind-hearted, will surpass in virtue that beautiful woman (with a jinn-like face) who hides behind her face a wicked nature and harshness.
For the wise woman is she who finds sweetness in the bitter vinegar from her husband’s hand as if it were candy, not she who drinks honey while frowning and bearing bitterness in the face of her spouse.
The woman who loves goodness is a haven of tranquility and a source of solace, while the wicked woman—we seek refuge in God from the great affliction of her and the evil of her temptation.
And the situation of a good man with a wicked wife is like that of a parrot forced to keep company with a crow. He sees the shattering of his cage and his departure as a bounty and a celebration.

For under the shadow of a bad relationship, you either wander the earth aimlessly, seeking escape, or you surrender your heart to despair, perpetual misery, and constant humiliation. (Either you work hard to build a life, achieve your goals, and accept the risks of travel, or you will be forced to stay at home and succumb to misery and helplessness.)
And falling into the depths of the judges’ prisons and enduring their shackles is easier on the soul than seeing the wife’s frowning, scowling face throughout the house.
Thus, travel and exile become a celebration and a joy for the head of the household if his lot in his home is a woman of bad character who spoils the tranquility of his life and his livelihood.
Know that the doors of joy and happiness will be closed to the house where a woman’s cries are loud and tranquility is lost.
If a woman rebels against her husband’s obedience and turns away from his guidance, then judge that man to wear women’s clothing (navy/indigo trousers), (a sign of the loss of his masculinity and control over his household).
And a woman who is inherently ignorant and deviant in her behavior is not a wife, but rather a persistent affliction that you have brought upon yourself.
If that wife’s trustworthiness is diminished by even a single grain of barley, then wash your hands of the entire storehouse of wheat. A small act of betrayal can lead to great ruin.
God intended good and blessings for the man who was granted a wife whose heart was steadfast in affection and whose hands were bound by trustworthiness and chastity.
If a woman dares to smile and appear cheerful before strangers, tell her husband: Cease your boasting of masculinity and jealousy, for the fortress of your dignity has crumbled.
The reckless woman who oversteps her bounds and interferes in matters that do not concern her will one day find herself slapping her husband’s face and belittling him.
It is better for a wife not to see strangers, lest her final abode be the grave if she leaves the sanctuary of her home (for other than her husband), grave is better for her than exposing herself to strangers.
And if you are certain that your wife is not steadfast in her chastity, then remaining with her is neither wise nor prudent.
Indeed, escaping (fleeing, abandoning) such a wife, even to the belly of the whale (like the Prophet Jonah) and perishing, is easier and more honorable than living in the shadow of shame and scandal.

So strive to protect her from the gaze of strangers. If she does not repent and respond, then it makes no difference whether she is a wife or you are a husband, for the purpose of the bond between you will have been lost.
Even a good and virtuous woman’s actions are not free from sadness, pain, and discomfort; so what about one who combines ugliness of appearance with a harsh nature? So, it’s best to leave her.
And how beautiful and eloquent is that saying uttered by two men who were overwhelmed by the temptations and troubles of women.

The first said: “O God, keep the affliction (of wicked women) away from everyone.” The second replied, in a harsher tone: “Rather, O God, leave no trace of women in this world.”
So, my friend, renew your household (marry) with every spring, for rehabilitation last year’s marriage is of no benefit.

So, my friend (O Saadi), if you see a man captivated by a woman’s charm and utterly enthralled by her, do not pelt him with arrows of mockery or blame.
For you too would accept her injustice and endure her cruelty and coldness, if you were ever to taste her passion, even just once, at the hour of dawn.
Contextual and Mystical Notes
The Woman as Queen of the Home (Darwish Ra Padsha): Saadi believes that true “wealth” lies in the richness of the soul and domestic tranquility. In Sufism, harmony with one’s family is considered an integral part of worship, as domestic anxieties prevent the heart from being present with God.
The Five-Way Beating (Panj Nawbat): These beats were performed for sultans at the gates of their palaces as a symbol of absolute sovereignty.
Here, Saadi elevates the status of those who find a compatible partner, placing them on par with the kings for whom these beats were performed.
The Glimpse of Mercy (Nazar-e Suy-oost): Saadi indicates that marital happiness is a manifestation of God’s special mercy. The affection and mercy mentioned in the Quran are divine gifts bestowed upon those whose intentions are sincere.
Essence versus Form (Khosh-manesh): Here, Saadi applies the philosophy of “meaning versus form.” The gnostic sees in good conduct (meaning) a beauty that surpasses the harmony of features (image), and outward beauty is a “veil” if it is not adorned by inner beauty.
Tawti and Raven: A classic Sufi metaphor (also used by Rumi) to illustrate spiritual “disharmony.” The tawti (the luminous soul) suffers from the company of the raven (the dark soul or evil companion), and salvation here lies in complete detachment.
Indigo trousers (sarawil kohlī): A historical term referring to garments dyed with dark blue indigo, originally intended for women. Wearing them by a man in Persian poetry symbolizes “moral impotence” or the loss of authority and control over his household.
The measure and the wheat (kīla and anbār): A beautiful metaphor for marital fidelity. Saadi believes that “trust” is indivisible; one who betrays in the smallest matter (a grain of barley) cannot be trusted in the largest (a storehouse of wheat).
Last year’s calendar (Pari calendar): This verse is one of Saadi’s satirical proverbs, reflecting boredom with marital monotony or a desire for renewal. It expresses the culture of his time, which permitted polygamy as a solution to escape estrangement.
The magic of union (Jur and Bar): Saadi concludes the story with a humanistic and mystical touch; “beauty” is the greatest veil, and Saadi asserts that “pleasure” and beauty justify enduring “injustice.” The lover forgets his pain in the moment of closeness to his beloved.
This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that the stability of life and the tranquility of the soul are contingent upon the chastity and loyalty of the woman and the man’s ability to protect the sanctity of his home with insight and commendable jealousy. It is important in social education because it guides us to the understanding that “marital fidelity” is the thread that binds the family together, emphasizing, sometimes ironically and sometimes harshly, that remaining in the shadow of betrayal or domestic discord is a premature death that those of honor and intellect abhor.
True happiness and spiritual elevation in this life are contingent upon choosing a righteous partner with a good nature and eloquent speech, who can transform one’s poverty into wealth and one’s misery into… Tranquility is important in moral and social education because it guides the seeker to understand that the beauty of the soul, loyalty, and psychological harmony are more worthy of care than the allure of fleeting appearances. It emphasizes that a safe haven of affection is the immediate paradise of the knower, and that bad company is a constraint from which one must flee to protect the purity of the heart.
