Wrestling with a lion or confronting one with the power of a sword is not the act of the wise.
Do not fight or display strength with a drunkard
Be cautious and wise with the clever and cunning, and do not be deceived by appearances.
(Saadi used the gesture of placing his hand in front as a sign of reflection before responding to or confronting the cunning and clever.)
In other words: It is not the way of the wise to fight a lion or face a sword. So do not wrestle/confront someone whose mind is clouded (a drunkard).
And before the cunning and powerful person, hold your hand and take refuge in prudence. Do not be deceived by his appearance, and do not be an easy target for his trickery.
Arabic Translation
التصارع مع الأسد أو مواجهة السيف بيد خالية، ليس عَمل العقلاءِ
لا تقاتل أو تَظهر القُوة مع السكران
فكن حذرًا وحَكيمًا مع من هو ذكي وماكر ولا تنخدع بالمظاهر
(سعدي أستخدم وضع اليد في الامام دليل للتفكر قبل الرد أو مواجهة الماكر والذكي)

ليس من شأنِ الحكيمِ أن يُقاتل الأسدَ أو يُواجه السيفَ
فلا تُصارع/تواجه مَن غابَ عقلُه (السكران)
وأمامَ الشخصِ الماكرِ والمُقتدرِ، كُفَّ يدكَ واحتمِ بالتدبيرِ
فلا تنخدع بظاهرهِ ولا تكن سبيلاً سهلاً لحيلتهِ
