4-The Story of the Cat and the Mouse

English Translation

When the mouse community voiced their grievances and woes to the Sultan, he addressed them, saying: “My dear kin and close ones,

I shall exact such vengeance upon the cat that the tale becomes a legend passed down through generations and across lands.”

A week later, the Sultan mobilized an army of three hundred and thirty thousand wretched mice.

The poor mice were arrayed for battle—some bristling with spears, arrows, and bows, others girded with razor-sharp swords.

A host of infantry emerged from the flanks, while swords flashed and swept across the field of battle.

The armies gathered in force, hailing from regions as far-flung as Khorasan, Rasht, and Gilan.

Among them was a mouse who served as the army’s vizier—a valiant, wise, courageous, and astute leader.

He issued a command: “One of us must set out to confront the cat in the city of Kerman—

Either the cat must come to the foot of the mouse-society sultan’s throne as an obedient servant, or he must prepare for war and combat.

There was a mouse of humble standing—reputed to be a seasoned ambassador—who set out for the city of Kirman.

Upon arriving in Kirman, the seasoned ambassador addressed the cat with a blend of gentleness and cunning: “I am an envoy of the mighty King—the Sultan.”

“I bring you grave news: the King of the Mice has resolved to wage open war against you.”

“You must either go at once, willingly, to the foot of the Sultan’s throne, or prepare yourself for a long battle.”

The cat retorted with biting sarcasm: “This Sultan of yours is raving—I have never budged from Kirman, nor shall I ever do so.”

Yet, in secret, the cat was amassing a massive army of cats.

It was an army of powerful felines—fierce as lions—gathered from Isfahan, Yazd, and Kirman.

When the preparations for the cat army were complete, the order was issued to head to the battlefield.

The two armies advanced from every direction: the mouse army across the desert, and the cat army from the mountains and valleys.

After days of marching, they fought like valiant heroes in the desert of Fars.

The battle raged fiercely in that valley, with both sides fighting with heroism akin to that of the legendary Rustam.

Heavy casualties were suffered by both the mice and the cats—so many that counting them became a near-impossible, maddening task.

The Underlying Meaning and Satirical Symbolism of This Section

In this section, Ubayd Zakani masterfully employs the technique of “Mock-Heroic Satire”:

Regional Mobilization and Futile Conflagrations: A personal dispute escalates into an all-out regional war, mobilizing 330,000 mice from Khorasan, Rasht, and Gilan, while cats are rallied from Isfahan, Yazd, and Kerman. This mirrors the bloody conflicts and senseless wars between the Inju and Muzaffarid princes and local rulers during the 8th century AH. Thousands of ordinary folk and common subjects are driven to the slaughter—to “death’s incinerators”—solely to satisfy the greed or personal arrogance of rulers.

The language of diplomacy and political hypocrisy: An envoy (Ilchi) is dispatched bearing an official threat from the Shahanshah; the cat responds with mockery and crude insults (“The King is raving / He has eaten shit”), yet secretly mobilizes a massive army. This highlights the contrast between deceptive public denials and the covert orchestration of plots and treachery.

Stripping away historical heroism (drawing on the Shahnameh): The use of terms like “a battle lost” (jang-e maghlubeh shod) and “Rostam-esque” (Rostamaneh), alongside evocations of the Persian desert, creates a satirical comparison between the glories of genuine historical heroes and the petty wars of mice and cats. Zakani implies that the wars waged by the kings and sultans of his era are nothing more than clashes between animals fighting over spoils—bearing no relation whatsoever to true heroism.
