Cleansing the Heart of the accumulated Dust of Resentment

This Ghazal revolves around “spiritual self-sufficiency” and “the strength to persevere in the face of life’s vicissitudes,” where the poet evokes astonishing images from the “treasure troves of his delicate imagination.” He makes the “illuminating firefly” a symbol of the essence that needs no external oil to shine, and portrays “old age” as a bridge over the raging torrent of life, reshaping everyday reality with a “fresh style” that astonishes minds.

The heart, troubled by the pangs of longing, pays little heed to the wounds inflicted by tongues and the reproaches of the censurers (harsh, hurtful words, gloating). Has it ever been said that a hard thorn or a trivial remnant of debris possesses the power to halt the relentless whirlpool of a raging storm?

Likewise, it is impossible to forcibly extract the blade of fate from the wound of our love; for water, once absorbed by the parched earth, seeps into its depths and finds no way out.

And true essence transcends the need to draw upon the light of others. Do you not see that the luminous reed pen defeats the darkness of night with its own light, needing no oil like lamps?

And the stooping of the back in old age in this life is a sign of departure, as if life itself has set foot in the departing caravan of this world. This bent posture has become a bridge, crossing this raging torrent (the approaching destiny).

And sound judgment silences the tongues of those who engage in sophistry and debate. Like the whale’s powerful, relentless movement, it overcomes the crookedness of the hook clinging to it, and slips free like a roaring wave.

But silence and the absence of complaint make the taste bitter and harsh for my soul; so blessed is the wound that bled its inner pain (water mixed with blood), so that the body may find relief from the anguish of concealment.

And do not tie your heart to the star of status and wealth. The sun, which fills the world with light, rises anew with each dawn, for permanence in this world is impossible.

And whoever seeks the inner, illuminating essence by means of an external lamp commits folly due to their limited understanding, like one who sells what they possess now for a deferred debt. For truth shines from within, not from a lamp that itself needs something else (oil).

So, O Saeb, cleanse your heart of the accumulated dust of resentment. If you wish to see the hearts of loved ones pure and receptive to you, begin first by polishing the mirror of your own soul (*for the believer is a mirror to his fellow believer).

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

Self-Eloquence (The Pen): The third verse is considered an expression of Saeb’s aesthetic philosophy; Poetry and knowledge do not need external embellishment (oil); rather, they draw their light from the pristine “essential core.”

Time and Departure (The Bridge): A beautiful surreal image in which Saeb connects the bent back with the “bridge,” emphasizing that old age is the only passage to triumph over the torrent of mortality.

Critique of Attachment (Critique and Forgetfulness): In the eighth verse, Saeb uses the language of “merchants” to say that relying on external proofs to grasp spiritual truths is a grave loss of present certainty.

The Ghazal Meaning

Emphasizes the necessity of adhering to inner authenticity and rising above trivial matters. It is an invitation to endure the “slander” of the common people and to focus on purifying the soul from distress. Saeb’s genius shines through here as a “painter of concepts,” transforming age, status, and silence into tangible manifestations that provoke the reader to contemplate.
