Part Twelve: The Status and Rank of the Book of the Treasury of Secrets

In this passage, the wise Nizami Kanjawi stands in the position of “the creator who is proud of his work”; He describes this system not merely as poetry, but as a talisman that guards the secrets of supreme truth, and as a rhetorical miracle unmatched by any before him.

English Translation

I am the one who crafts these exquisitely beautiful blossoms (the new poetry), for I am the nightingale that sings and warbles in your gardens.

And on the path of your love, I sing with my spiritual breaths, and at the threshold of your neighborhood, I ring the bell of eloquence so that the heedless may awaken to the sound of meaning.

For I have not accepted anything borrowed from anyone (meaning that his poetry is entirely original and new); Nay, I spoke with my tongue all that my heart dictated to me, pure and clear.

I have revealed a new and manifest magic, and poured the structure of meaning into a mold unknown to anyone before me.

And I have refined myself in the first hours of dawn, and fashioned (weaving) a veil of permissible magic at the time of dawn, to enfold my secrets.

For this book contains the essence of Sufi poverty and Sultanic glory. Together, it is the true repository of Divine secrets.

And the sweetness of this book’s words (its expressions) is pure, untouched by the flies of imitation, nor has the fly of imitation ever lingered in my mind, immersed in the sweetness of what others have produced in beautiful poetry or beautiful words.

And from the magnificence of this book’s words (the sea) and its secrets, the prophet Noah falls humbled and bewildered (throwing down the shield, a sign of defeat in argument), and at this spring Al-Khidr (the Prophet), breaks his jar (because his water/words are sweeter than the water of life)

I searched among the kings for the one worthy of being crowned with this eloquent beauty (The Book: The Treasury of Secrets), so I drew lots among them, and your name came out (Sultan Bahramshah) as a sign of good omen.

And two letters came out from two noble stations, both sealed with the name of Bahramshah (a sign) (For the king)

That previous statement (the first and second eulogies) was merely gold smelted from an ancient mine, while this unique pearl was extracted from the sea of modern creativity.

Part Twelve The Status and Rank of the Book of the Treasury of Secrets (4)

Part Two (verses 12-22): In these verses, the sage Nizami Ganjavi draws a historical and literary comparison between his work/poetry and the works of his great predecessor. Sanai Ghaznavi (during the Ghaznavid dynasty, a Turkish state considered one of the most prominent of its time, despite initially serving the Samanid state (Ghulam), which followed the rule of the Persian Samanids in Khorasan, and which was interested in Persian poetry and culture), asserted that his poetic style was of the purest gold and the most unique design.

Thus, Sanai Ghaznavi raised the banner of poetry (the new style, the Mathnawi in poetry) in Ghazna, while this (the poetry of the poet Nizami) inscribed its unique style on the coinage of the land of Rum (a reference to his patron, Sultan Bahramshah of Arzinjan)

Although the words in that old coin were like pure gold, my golden coin today is of a higher quality and more refined style.

And though my works (my poetic output in the book, The Treasury of Secrets) are fewer in number than his (Sanai Ghaznavi’s) output, the recipient of the poetry (the patron, Bahramshah) will deem the book superior in recognition and appreciation of his works (Sanai Ghaznavi)

And though my style may be somewhat strange and complex, do not be unfair to it; If you embrace it (treat its words with great kindness) with your understanding, its obscurity will vanish, its nobility will shine forth, and its meanings will become clear.

For this discourse is more flourishing and more beautiful than the intricate patterns of a garden (a beautiful, well-arranged garden), and its light is not borrowed like a lamp (which needs oil to illuminate), but rather it is a light emanating from within itself.

This book (treasuray of secrets) is the most flourishing in this inhabited world (the village). It is more radiant than the heavens and more ancient than eternity itself.

The meaning in this book is not confined to a single color or style, nor can it be contained within ordinary human language; its language is an inner secret.

So I present to you this humble works (mere morsels) for your bountiful feast. Untouched by the hands of imitation, its meaning (the poetry within it) is known only to whom have a penetrating insights (the Sultan).

If you find in it something palatable in the sweetness of its words, then may it be a delight to your soul. Otherwise, let all that is in it fade into oblivion, and pay no heed to its contents whatsoever.

And on that night when you sit majestically at the table of Heaven, bestow upon me (the poet Nizami) whatever acceptance your heart deems fitting to your servant

For I, in the end, boast of being a guardian at your threshold, and I beat the drums of servitude for the glory of your station.

Part Twelve The Status and Rank of the Book of the Treasury of Secrets (4)

(Verses 23-33), where in this passage, the sage Nizami Ganjavi moves from praising the book to declaring his “personal superiority” over all other poets, considering himself the knight who has preceded the caravan by stages, and the disciple who seeks annihilation at the threshold of his patron (the king as his shadow) to reach the heavens.

Although I saw loyalty from the kings, yet I have chosen to bind myself to you and for my soul to be connected to you, for you are the very source of true loyalty.

For my service to you will surely lead me to the station of loyalty, and this thread of meaning will surely lead me to a higher purpose.

And if the poets and eulogists have turned their faces towards this eternal threshold, hoping for acceptance through your favor,

then they all, if they stand before me (Nezami) in the orderly position of the accountable (for comparison with my poetry); My poetry is of a unique style; who are these others before the eloquence of its expression (the words of the poet Nizami in his book, The Treasury of Secrets) before you (Sultan Bahramshah)?

I am the one who left them behind at these stations (my poetry surpasses what they wrote in this field), for I have guided the steed of my thought to a more distant stage, one beyond the reach of their illusions.

I have forged a tongue as sharp as diamond, and all those who tried to catch up with me from among the purveyors of mere words have had their heads blown by my eloquence.

The sword of my tongue, (Nezami works), has become the epitome of vanquishing adversaries. Its blade has not dulled, despite its age.

And although this station (the station of the poet Nizami and his poetry) has no equal, my feet still aspire to a peak higher than humankind can imagine.

And although the summit is lofty, I soar to it with ease on the wings of thought. Perhaps I may reap the fruits of my lofty spiritual striving.

Perhaps, by the light of your guidance and the radiance of your intellect, I may bow my head in humility where your noble foot treads (Sultan Bahramshah).

And I will wipe my brow with the dust of your threshold so that I may ascend to the heavens (the celestial sphere); for who but you can guide me? And how can I reach those peaks, if you do not take my hand?

Part Twelve The Status and Rank of the Book of the Treasury of Secrets (4)

The exquisite maqam (verses 34-43), where in this conclusion, the poet Nizami Kanjawi moves from the language of pride in art to the expression of “excuse” and “need”; He reveals his desire to meet the praised one and the obstacles that prevented him from doing so, employing an epic, mystical image of the journey toward “the truth.”

My intention and preparation were to spend these two months renewing my pledge of allegiance by kissing the dust at the threshold of the king (Bahram Shah).

But those surrounding me in this circle (A reference to the social environment, the constraints of time, or the limitations of access to power—material attachments to this world) have blocked my escape routes (blocked my path to liberating the soul from materialism, attaining spiritual freedom, and ascending to the realm of meaning).

For I longed, yearning to draw closer to you, to release this soul from this material body (to transcend my material limitations and reach you pure and cleansed of all things).

But when I looked again at the path, I found it full of obstacles. With ferocious lions, I saw in it daggers and drawn swords, surrounding me on every side (a symbol of the great dangers, until I reach you).

Yet, in this land besieged by swords, I raise my voice in a hymn of praise to you, so that the whole world may hear it clearly.

For I have poured the water of eloquence upon your threshold, and I am now like the sand, which even after the water dries up, (the praise fades, but the praiser remains in your service), steadfast in your service.

For I am before you like a lost speck in the sunlight, so, O God, grant my supplication at dawn, by virtue of this nearness.

For my heart has become a sea overflowing with your jewels, and the essence of my soul is now bound by the belt of your glory.

As long as night and day alternate, May God turn your dark night into day, and may the essence of your dominion shine brightly in the darkness of time.

May your abode in this world be surrounded by happiness and good fortune, and may your abode in the Hereafter be better and more lasting than this world.

Sufi and mystical meanings and commentaries on the poet’s verses

The poet begins by emphasizing that his book “The Treasury of Secrets” is not an imitation of anyone; He “does not accept borrowing from anyone,” as he praises the profound depth of his book, which transcends human limitations, to the point that even the symbols of survival and salvation (Noah and Khidr) bow before the power of its eloquence. He then proceeds to dedicate this “pearl” to his patron, Sultan Bahramshah.

The breaking of the jar: “Khidr Dar In Chashmeh Sabu Bishkanad” The jar in mysticism is limited, acquired knowledge, and breaking it means entering the overflowing ocean of divinely inspired knowledge, which this book represents.

The poet “defines the identity” of his work by comparing it to Sanai Ghaznavi’s work. He sees Sanai as the “founder of the Mathnawi” in Ghazni (present-day Afghanistan), but the poet Nizami is the “developer” who made poetry a more complex and unusual golden path. The poet acknowledges that his style is “strange” (a labyrinth of strange themes), but he insists that this strangeness is the secret of his brilliance.

The poet bases his argument on the idea that true poetry “has a magical effect at dawn,” built upon with spiritual exercises in the night, and what he says “What did you say to me” confirms that the heart is the only reference for truth with him, and this part is in reality a “statement of legitimacy” for the following articles; Where the reader is informed that what they are about to read is a “new creation” of meaning.

The station of the “new mold”: The poet believes that ancient wisdom needs a new “structure” (form) to influence souls; and here he claims to be building a new school of mysticism.

The poet’s “sugar”: In mysticism, sugar is the pleasure of witnessing. His statement that no fly had ever landed on it means that his taste was purely for God, untainted by any worldly taint or hypocrisy.

As for the conclusion with “it is clear,” it is the station of “annihilation in the praised,” where the poet sees his ultimate glory as humbling himself at the threshold of Truth or “the perfect human being.”

The superiority of eras: The poet believes that each era has its own path. And that his style is distinguished by its combination of “antiquity” (eternal wisdom) and “modernity” (exquisite expression).

The symbol of “bone” and “dog” is an expression of the state of “pure neediness,” where the poet sheds his ego to become merely a “servant” of the divine light manifested in his subject.

Historical and Literary Background: Nizami’s Place Compared to the Ghaznavid School and the Role of Political Patronage

Excellence in the world of literature is not just a claim. It is the result of a lasting mark that time has not erased. Persian sources confirm that Nizami Ganjavi was not merely an imitator of those who came before him. He was the greatest developer and the first true architect of a unique poetic school.

We can understand this excellence through four main pillars:

  1. Superiority over Sanai Ghaznavi (the founder of the mystical mathnawi tradition)

Although Sanai laid the foundation of the mystical mathnawi, Nizami believed his own poetic “coin” (style) was finer in craftsmanship and higher in quality.

He portrayed himself as the knight who had ridden a full stage ahead of the caravan. His language was no longer “borrowed” like a lamp that needs oil; it was a light that shone from within himself.

  1. Unique mastery of rhetorical magic and complex imagery

Nizami’s language, especially in Makhzan al-Asrar (The Treasury of Secrets), is often described as a labyrinth of strange and artistically complex themes that reflect many layers of creation. More than any other poet, he succeeded in blending poetry with the visual arts (painting and architecture) through brilliant use of symbol, light, and color.

This visual miracle in his verse made him a unique model that was never repeated after him.

  1. Reaching perfection in narrative poetry

While the poets of Khorasan excelled in ascetic poetry or praise poetry, Nizami was the one who brought romantic (lyrical) narrative poetry to its highest point.

He transformed stories such as Khosrow and Shirin and Layla and Majnun from simple tales of physical pleasure into spiritual journeys of mystical annihilation that lead the seeker toward the Eternal Beloved.

This blending of the banquet (bazm), the battlefield (razm), and mystical knowledge (irfan) made him the central figure of Persian literature.

  1. Creator of the “Khamsa” (the new standard)

Nizami established the method of the “Five Treasures” (Panj Ganj / Khamsa). This was an independent intellectual and artistic system that became a guiding model for every poet who came after him. Later poets tried to follow his footsteps but never fully reached his level.

Nizami himself said he had forged his tongue into a diamond sword that cut through the claims of pretenders.

He stands as the “Sultan of Eloquence,” before whom others appear as those who must answer for their work.

Nizami was certain that his foot stood in a station without equal. He was able to open the “Treasury of Secrets” with a key that no one before him possessed: the key of the Perfect Human being, who unites wisdom, love, and eloquence.

Evaluation of Nizami’s superiority over the Ghaznavid school

Studies show that the Ghaznavid period (4th–5th centuries AH) was a golden age for praise poetry, the qasida, and the early development of the mathnawi. The state supported poets such as Unsuri, Farrukhi, and even Sanai in his early career.

Yet, Nizami can be said to have “surpassed” them by raising poetry to a new stage for these reasons: From the mind to the heart: The Ghaznavid school (and Sanai in particular) focused on glorifying reason and knowledge.

In Makhzan al-Asrar, Nizami shifted the centre to the glorification of the human essence and the telling of “the story of the heart.”

Complexity of imagery (the Western / Azerbaijani style): Orientalists note that Nizami’s poetry is marked by highly complex language and unusual metaphorical compounds that are not found in the poets of eastern Iran (the Khorasani poets of the Ghaznavid age).

He turned his poetry into a “golden coin” of finer minting than even Sanai’s.

Narrative perfection: While Ghaznavid poets excelled in single poems, Nizami created the Khamsa as a complete intellectual and aesthetic system that united love, wisdom, and epic in a way never achieved before.

The role of “nationality” (Turk / Persian) in the progress of poetry

Sources point to a careful distinction in the role of power and ethnicity: Samanid period (Persian): A strong Persian poetic school began at their court under Rudaki. The focus was on reviving the Persian language as a cultural identity after the coming of Islam.

Ghaznavid period (Turkish): Although they were Turks, they adopted Persian as the language of the court and high literature to give legitimacy to their rule. They strongly supported Persian poetry, but it remained largely worldly, revolving around praise and the banquet.

Nizami’s period (Atabegs – Turkish): Nizami lived in Azerbaijan under Turkish dynasties. Yet this geographical setting (the Caucasus) produced a Persian poetic style marked by philosophical and mystical depth and verbal complexity — sometimes called the “Azerbaijani style.”

Conclusion

“Nationality” was no longer the main driver of poetry’s progress. Political patronage and intellectual transformation mattered more.

Nizami himself is classified as a deeply learned Iranian poet who drew from Persian history, Islamic heritage, and world knowledge to become the “Sultan of Eloquence” who transcends narrow ethnic boundaries.

Sanai Ghaznavi remains the authentic root — the first teacher who broke the traditions of court praise poetry in the Ghaznavid court and introduced strict philosophical and ethical subjects into poetry.

Nizami himself acknowledged the influence of Sanai’s encyclopaedic Hadiqat al-Haqiqa when he began composing Makhzan al-Asrar.

The main feature of Ghaznavid literature was reliance on reason and knowledge. While they glorified intellectual learning, Nizami made his poetry a mirror for the manifestations of the heart and the spirit.

In that earlier age the mathnawi form had been used mainly for heroic epics (such as Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh). The shift toward the mystical mathnawi began to mature there, and it reached its full perfection with Nizami.

Note: The Bahramshah to whom Makhzan al-Asrar was dedicated is Fakhr al-Din Bahramshah of the Mengujekid dynasty, the ruler of Erzincan. The Bahramshah to whom Sanai dedicated Hadiqat al-Haqiqa was the Ghaznavid sultan. Nizami deliberately plays on the similarity of the two names.
